I would like to know if the cassette is compatible with standard 9 speed freehubs…

FWIW, I would go for it as a 1×10 setup and be grateful of the 11-36 option.

Also is there a shifter only setup so you dont need the matching brakes?

Mamadirt, a tad over £400 but I did have a new cassette in my box and the seatpost (wich lets the bike down) its got deore shifters and SLX mechs, a decent if inexpensive BB and a decent chain so should run well for ages.

Had a sniff on some cheap SID’s but cant get hold of the seller, WILLY if you looking I will pay the price you wanted for them!!!

My own bike have been built over time and evolved and though I dont know their cost (scary thought) I know it would be loads more to buy an equivilent off the peg.

Just dont think you can do cheap bikes cheaply if you see what I mean.

Now gotta keep an eye out for stuff to lighten Tinsetta’s up a bit.

Well I learnt what an intergrated and a semi integrated headset was all about thats for sure!!

So many variables, I knew as it was a little bike I needed 170mm cranks for it, that restricted me somewhat to new cranks and added a lump of wieght to it, but its got a brand new drivetrain on it so will do Tinsetta for ages, and a few niceties that you wouldnt usually get like braided cables and some shiny bits..

I cut about a foot off them forks and got another foot to come off now we have found the happy bar height, headtube is so short on it, they will be a throw away forks once the next foot is cut off…

I think there are choices, I bought whatever my local bike shop had though as was desperate to build the bike up..
check the bike build out on the “Can you build a bike for less than off the peg” thread.

The tea was completely needed I can assure you…

I got the frame for £42 brand new off ebay
wheels as new for £59 ebay again
Forks off here again as new £50
    SLX shaddow for £28

I thought with a start like that I was onto a winner, had a few bits n bobs already and the rest was Wiggle and CRC..

Its the wifes bike and she is happy with it and appreciated the effort, but I did wonder if it was all worth it, coulda bought something similar and put a few anodized bits on it…

Well, jackthedog was bang on, its exactly as your googling said a semi integrated, the one I bought didnt fit…

dickyboy, you having/putting a set of brakes put together?

The old style XTR calipers are peanuts, and still a great brake…

ha ha, yeah I would have loved to, but it wont fit!!!!

Bought a brand new carrera frame for £41 thought it would make a nice bike for the wife, currently its cost me about the same price as going to Halfords for a bike with a similar spec….. Bloody good bikes for the money in hindsight.

Oh well, will post when I can about the headset…

Anyone want a lightly used 1 1/8th Cane Creek in black too?

you talking about the old style levers or the new ones?

No problem, run them, anyone heard of a broken set?

(disclaimer) i did just about everything your not supposed to with mine and no problems, however such claims can bring on the RC31 failure stories.

Stick the GF’s bike back together as you said it didnt have anything wrong anyhow, pop your new but not right headset on your bike and I will re post over the weekend if the FSA intergrated thing I bought is right or not… that way you dont have to go through my pain…

Integrated I believe but I am no expert just about 5 hours ahead of our friend here, I bought this headset this morning, with luck it will arrive tomorrow AM and I will know for sure.

From the image I sent you can see it measures up the 45mm this headset says it is… (the image I know doesnt show it bang on 45mm, but it is, it was hard to hold it all and take the pic)

It says semi integrated on the halfords site..

I think you remove the top hat for the enduro bearings(you need to google it though to be sure), the guide I linked you too shows how to get it all appart…

If its a Carrera its an intergrated headset, I just had exactly the same trouble last night..

This will help, but I think there is something specific about the enduro bearings…

Nothing wrong with XT hubs, but Hopes are better…

Would you have to buy new splined rotors for the XT hubs? Maybe that would offset the extra cost of the Hopes a bit.

    Right so far its:-

    Halfords….fail
    Evans…..fail
    LBS……fail (first time mind you)

CRC its all up to you….

I got permie Chris dropping into Halfrauds for me later, LBS dont have an integrated in stock, last chance would be Evans to get one for building it tomorrow…
Could probably have it by tomorrow from CRC but would be stuffed if it doesnt show in time.

Got no issues at all with my welded in god knows where Tinbred… Hasnt ever occurred to me to wonder where it was made, assume China?

If they are a polished finish like mine (has been done) I rekon you would sell even more.

If you pinch flatted in a corner, sounds like your being a bit ambitious with your low tyre pressures, you say its the same tyres and pressure but is the rim the same?
Are you hitting the corners harder on the new bike?
Are you sitting in the middle of the bike or over the rear wheel more on the new bike?
Is this a similar position to your old bike?

Prince John, had both my mechs so long that I dont remember the jockey wheels and if they had play, the replacement jockeys I run dont have this kind of movement… so is the floating correct then?

    tinsy
    Free Member

I bought an SLX shadow mech, but the first thing I noticed was how much play there was in the jockey wheels, one was a lot worse than the other so put one with least play next to the cassette, sure it will be OK but not the quality I was expecting.

I dont have first hand experience of this but had read with interest about the antifreeze, and also adding glitter to the mix as apparently it greatly increased the puncture sealing capabilites..

I had a quick look and couldnt find where I had read it, but some determined googling should find the info..

You like the Enduro 2.2’s Spesh tyres always size up huge, just try some 2.0’s…

I also like Adrenalines, and Fast Traks….

I have first hand of the Dirty Jo’s bloody great frames, I had an f creme triple butted one, still under a £100 I believe. Under 4lb for a medium.

Just built a Malt 1 up for mates lad too, your right on those, very good too.

Still rekon if you can stretch to £210 you wont go wrong with the team tig sl at 3.25lbs its an amazingly light start to a bike build.

    tinsy

Merlin team tig sl sounds like a whole lotta frame for the money, assuming you want an XC frame.. really light.

Was a very interesting thread on how to make wheel milk the other day and it seems homebrew stuff can be better than bought stuff at lifespan and puncture sealing.
