If your buying a new one, and you like Shimano stuff, I can reccomend the shaddow mechs, especially on a hartail, as they are just so much quieter on rough stuff, as the mech itself cant hit the chainstay.

I gave my mate a free frame and cranks and he built this beauty.

Nope not significantly faster I dont rekon…

I might add I have been forced to ride my 27-29lb do it all full sus as my race bike, do it all, 22lb hardtail was knicked, and I havent really noticed much difference…. My own performance varies so wildly its hard to tell mind.

Carlos, or anyone in a similar position, if you cntact me (mail in profile) I can show you what I sent to my insurance after my recent theft, Direct Line were brilliant, if anyone is looking for home insurance cover at the moment.

And if you out there without a note of your bikes frame number go out to the shed and write it down tonight.

When you say slack No I dont think there should actually be slack as such, the mech should still keep a little tension even in small small, a normal long cage mech can just about take up all the slack and still run small small, and big big… Neither are ideal but it should do it for test purposes and the odd ferk up out on the trail.

Maybe the chain was always a bit long but you didnt pay much attention to it until your recent upgrade?

trajic it was all going so well, I agree the search thing isnt very intuitive, least for this dumbass, but n,o no, no, on your 2nd point.

I dont mind the repeat posts, sometimes there is a different slant on it, and to be honest if you dont fancy answering about mud tyres then you dont have to, so its no biggie.

My mate just bought the Carrera Vulcan for his mrs, but went for the mans one as she is very tall, and the mans bike had a better spec than the girls bike, 2nd decathlon too, another £50 on your budget gets you the 5.3 with a full 27 speed and discs, Merlin might have a couple of the commencal's left at £300 they were great but might all be gone.

Yeah like Bob said or even just run your normal loop but backwards..

Shiny stuff does help, but Pook I struggle getting excited about a new chain, thats just one of them bstad things that usually requires another £30+ you didnt want to spend!!

I would usually say bin the race and just go on a fun weekend ride (kinda my theory on 24 hour events anyhow), BUT in this case, your other half is unable to ride, but at least can be around you and be part of the 24 hour experience, you get to torture yourself for 24 hours, and forget all your other troubles except riding for a couple of days… If not revert to plan A, with the booze as suggested.

maybe, not had it done, wouldnt have be a frame place, there will be an indutrial estate near you with a blast cabinet and someone tame to do it for you, but having used said cabinet its a bit messy, so wrap absoltely every surface with duct tape you dont want blasted and pay special attention to protecting any threads, and then cleaning them out after.

Its worth looking into some kind of chemical etching, it might not be too difficult and a lot less messy..

Hypothetically speaking, and not from experience, could get decals made at a sign shop that was just the outside of what you actually wanted written on it, like a stencil if you get my meaning, and apply those to the polished frame and get the area lightly sandblasted and them remove the stencil decals… There maybe be a chemical way of etching on but my guess is they will all need the stencils anyhow..

Polishing bit is easy enough just work at it.

GTDAVE… like this sort of mud? Nah didnt slow me down at all, I meant to go over the bars just there and land like a cat on all 4's, Would have probably slowed a lesser rider mind you..

you got unlucky bending a cassette i rekon, I was an XT user for ages but cant justify the price now, I bought a couple of HG61's from CRC tiny bit lighter than deore, doubt its as good at shedding mud as an XT or any spider type cassette, but it doesnt look as bad as deore level.

This is a silly question, the only TRUE answer is you need both. Though PP might have a point… but then he is bias.

mrmichaelwright… first bad thing I have ever heard on 520's in my experience they are brilliant..

When my knee was ferked I road flats for 2 rides with a pair of slip on Vans, I dont reccomend the Vans!!

    WillTheRealForumPleaseStandUp
Just get some egg beaters for the full suss, and a cheap pair of welgo flats and swap em about, takes the same time as changing shoes.

    edit… did I pass?

Northshaun, how much do you weigh? edit 13.5 stone.. I am 12st + depending on the weather and run about that, however remeber the gauge on the pump could be well out as they are crap, best to set the sag right to get the shock right.

I Just re read you OP and didnt twig before sorry, 130psi is too low for your weight, bikes vary with leverage ratios etc, but 130 was just too low!!
