24hrs is a whole lot of pain and suffering…i’ve heard of animals chewing their own limbs off to escape….i’ve only ever snared wabbits and watching them get caught tell me there’s a whole world of hurt going on.

You are doing it wrong then, for rabbits you catch them on their run and break the neck. For foxes you catch them round the neck and they go to sleep as it’s ratcheted. Built properly deer will jump it and it’s too high for a foxes legs. Anyone that doesn’t check them is not doing their job properly, same as a rogue farmer too lazy to properly care for livestock doesn’t mean keeping sheep is barbaric.

Somewhere in general is a setting for SMTP mail or something, you don’t want that unless you know the settings, and then setting it to no means you can’t use gmail / webmail accounts for the admin address. I think. Worth trying a proper email account in there anyway.

Anyone that thinks hunting has anything to do with pest control either has an agenda or has no idea what they are talking about. Hunts actually used to stop keepers snaring / shooting / digging so they have something to chase.

Hunting deer with dogs is illegal

Deer hunting involves the deer being chased by a pack of dogs till the point of near exhaustion when it comes to a stand and is shot. This is prohibited by the Act for all species of deer.

Taking some dogs with you stalking (two) to catch a wounded deer is allowed but I don’t think any pro really would, not a hound anyway. And you certainly don’t stalk on a horse. There is some BS put about of being allowed to flush ‘old’ deer so they can be shot, but proposing to shoot a moving deer with people and dogs about is just taking the piss. You should have got photos of the dogs taking it down.

As for fox snares it is a legal requirement to check them every 24 hours and that’s not hard to do.

Don’t expect anything different on the Black apart from 100 yards of root section. I’ve been going up there for 10+ years only because it’s local and nothing much has changed in that time.

Good for a long traffic free ride, I’m sort of used to it and it makes for a pleasant surprise when I go somewhere (anywhere) that has had a bit of an effort made.

All the investment seems to go in to the downhill stuff. Which I’ve never even bothered to find as I ride a HT, so am unqualified to comment on that.

Do find it a lot less busy further out, which has its attractions, you don’t always get that feeling of isolation at a lot of the popular ones plus they sometimes feel a bit ‘artificial’.

I try to check out the routes first myself that they are fairly flat and no road sections, the flatter the less that distance seems to factor in getting tired.

Have found that ex railway routes and along rivers (obviously!) are best. Plus trying out first you can work out which end is best to start so it’s down hill back if it’s not circular.

My eldest used to moan a lot till I took them on a black route one day, never a peep since on the flat ones.

The sloping bucket / ramp and trail of sunflower seeds used to work for us. Although I had a friend who had one living under their floor boards for months.

Second the non standard question we tried all sorts from cryptic word images to banning gmail but they stopped overnight with ‘what is 1 + 1?’ custom question in the registration section. Didn’t even have to change the question again.

I think Zulu is right, when I was at agri college (about a zillion years ago) I remember from a ‘what you can kill’ class being told that cats are property so it’s like shooting someones car or windows out. But for some reason all dogs off the lead are fair game. Probly goes back to the egyptian times or something.

Few days in Glentress very soon (yay!), the Black Forest in summer.

Currently debating whether to take bikes or hire something there.

Does anyone know what rate/if they charge on ferries for towbar bike racks?

Another Interlaken visitor here. Went last year, second the Grindelwald trip. Stayed at a site called Manor Farm, there are a few near each other next to lake Thun, one where you can stay in big wigwams!

Nice leisurely walk to the town centre from the campsite by the river, ferry trips etc and the biggest mountains you ever saw overlooking the whole place.

From Grindalwald there are cable cars in all directions and hiking trails to a glacier, cows with bells the works. Was red hot, never rained once.

How come no one ever recommends 307s? Cheap tax & ins on 1.6 hdi, 50mpg, is there something no ones telling me about them?

Mine can fit 3 bikes, me and 2 kids in.

Mine rubbed at first then I read somewhere about loosening them, pulling the brake on full and gently tightening the bolts incrementally. Seemed to work fine after that.

I built one of these for next to nothing from those £3 2.4m lenths you get from B&Q and some chipboard.

Actually I customised a bit with 4 legs front and back and a gap in the middle for a seat. Kept it narrowish and tall but it’s solid as a rock. Cheap circler saw & small vice bolted on.

Knocked it up in a day with the circler saw. Dead easy, no joints.

Can do pics / plans if you want.

One dimensional characters, predictable plot, clee-shayed dialogue and cheesy acting. All the things you now notice in 60 / 70s films. But maybe because it reminded you of the first time you saw them it was strangely watchable.

Although with this one coming out about the same time as The Reader, Wrestler and Slumdog its flaws really showed through. Can’t believe the critics rated it so.

kelvin – What sort of brake levers do you use on the midges? And is yours a long or short.

    tinribz

I thought the short ones were for drops and the long for flats? But if the short is OK with flats I guess that answers my question.

Also, do you need a new hub to put a geared cassette on?

Woody, is that a Roadrat? Cos they come with different top tube lengths and I wondered if it was a big issue changing if you didn’t get on with them.

I believe the expression you are looking for is pre or post-lactateriat.

All I know is coffee tastes funny pre so I stick to the trusted method for tea too. A milky teabag is just wrong.

Unless you modded it. In which case –

There is a law against driving in an aggressive / threatening way. I think the way it generaly works is you get a couple of offical warnings then they can take your car off you. Assuming it relates to off-road too:

Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002. states:
1 Where a constable in uniform has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle is being used on any occasion in a manner which:?(a) contravenes section 3 or 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52) (careless and inconsiderate driving and prohibition of off-road driving), and?(b) is causing, or is likely to cause, alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public,?he shall have the powers set out in subsection (3).

Although I don’t think that many Police actually are aware of it and they only usually do anything if they actually witness it themselves. Might be worth a letter of complaint though. The fact it was a footpath not a bridleway seems pretty irrelevant.
