I'd put my money on heavy being more tiring.

spech allez cos everyone recommends them, and I have one and seems spot on to me. Or the trek 1.2 I suppose, or Giant Defy 4, or the Guess RB1 if you want something different.

Second had is way over priced IMO and there must be some 09 bargins kicking about on the net by now surley.

If you could stretch I'd go for one of these, or the boardman comp.

It's not I don't trust bike shops, its just fun to fix up yourself. And a good excuse to acquire more tools. Like someone said everything just bolts together anyway, how hard is that.

Can't help thinking of fix push. :-)

Depends where you live or intend to ride. And how fit you are I guess.

I got a double (first road bike) and was fine on the local loop with steep but short hills, even over-took some mtb'rs going up.

Soon as I went up on the (Yorkshire) moors…

Double means short cage derailler short chain double front shifter? So I swopped the 11-25t for an 11-32 SLX cassette, XT rear mech & new chain (CRC flood sale). Been up 25% no probs since. Also seem to use the inner ring a lot less generally.

Think it would have been cheaper to have bought a triple.

Jond you just made my day, bit puzzled why I enjoyed the pokemon bit so much.

Anyone also notice the utube link on the right about Anrens custom bikes – long travel 853 steel hardtails with short springy rear – Hmm, even the decals look familiar. I guess all things great actually come from California.

Having walked up recently I can tell you it's lot steeper than it looks. I saw a few cyclists turn back half way. But the middle bit looked ideal for riding.

Go to the router admin pages, depending on your router (google it) it will something like http://192.168.0.1 there should be something that says 'Attached devices' or currently connected.

Sometimes people can connect remotely and steal your bandwidth if you don't change the default passwords, tells you how on youtube.

    Tried some WD40?

Thought about heating but read that alloy expands more than steel.. :|

Cooling would be a goer if I had some way to cool it.

Although there is not much left to tug on any more.

Was there last Sunday doing the Reeth TanHill loop. Had forgotten how great the scenery is round there. On the road bike though, and didn't see many other bikers either. Put it down to the bad weather (and 25%ers).

Will be back looking for some off road routes.

x trainer for say 35-40 minutes heart rate upto 120-135bpm,

Assuming your are not age 60 this is hardly exercising. I'd take some of that 'fat burning zone' stuff with a pinch of salt, total calories burned is a what it's really about.

HR should be nearer 150 and still sustainable.

When you (quickly) get bored of that go for intervals of 135 > 165 > 135, watching TV for 45 mins. You'll burn twice the calories in half the time, and get fitter and faster to boot.

For someone whose licence was first awarded after 01/01/97 the regulations are different in that they are not allowed to tow a vehicle that weighs more than the kerbweight of their car without taking a further test

All drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997[2] retain their existing entitlement to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM) without passing any special driving test.

Since 1 January 1997 all drivers who hold category C or D entitlement have been limited to trailers up to 750kgs MAM; Category C+E or D+E must be held in order to tow trailers in excess of this.

I.E. new drivers for the last 12 years have to do an additional test in order to tow anything over 750kgs. Many of these are coming up to an age where they might be thinking about getting a caravan.

Because a caravan is still a trailer.

Why do you need to take the conc up? You need a floating wood floor.

Bamboo Flooring – An Eco-Friendly Alternative to Hardwood Flooring

The modern, environmentally friendly and durable alternative to hardwood is bamboo flooring. Being a grass, as opposed to timber, gives bamboo the edge as not only a building product (being strong and at the same time flexible), but also as a sustainable resource: wood takes approximately 15-20 years to reach maturity, whereas the non-harmful harvesting of bamboo takes a mere 3 to 5 years. Bamboo has traditionally been the material of choice in most of Asia, and it is only recently that its benefits and environmental properties have begun to be utilised more fully in the west.

Think I might walk past that without reading, looks a bit like a local fete flyer. Should use some people to make more engaging, a pair of eyes somewhere.

Would you walk past / turn up for this:

Could snap some photos for next year's.

No but yes, I tried some of these endura ones at the weekend.

Weren't as impressive as I was expecting, still felt the need to to stand up on a few down hills, change position now and again. But it was a 5 hour ride and better than nothing.

The padding feels massive, nappy like probably cos I'm not used to it, and a bit tight round my (skinny) legs.

Rolf has a point. Some folk seem to find something macho in not using your low gears but there is a cadence at which you produce the most power the most efficiently and this is a fairly fast spin – IIRC 70+. Mashing a low gear builds strength but you still produce the best power spinning. Going into a geaar that is too high for you will slow you down.

Cynic al is also right that real training if thats what you want takes real knowledge – and sorting the wheat from the chaff on here is hard.

Studies have actually shown that the most power is produced most efficiently at around 60 rpm. But because of the whole slow twitch fast twitch muscle stuff, you will be less fatigued keeping it at 80.

First off I'd get a heart rate monitor, time yourself up a hill and take HR readings top and bottom.

Find somewhere flat and after a warm up pedal fast n hard for 3 minutes till you hit 85% max HR, then cruise for 3 mins.

    Repeat about 6 – 9 times, twice a week.

After two or three weeks try the hill again, maybe try shorter intensity down to 90 secs.

I hummed and harred over this for my son, wanted to get him a 26"er but was way too soon. I ended up just going to a cheap LBS with him and getting a Raleigh tank off the shelf for a ton. He loves it regardless (the black version), been round Glentress on it… well the green and blue.

Spent the saved cash on building a decent 26" / isla looka-like-ee bike for his older sister.

Once you get to 26" you know it's worth spending the cash because the parts will get worn out. Unlike her 20" which did about 20 miles.

He'll get his when he's big enough and will no doubt appreciate the difference by then!

Then again if you can go up to £200 what about this Kona.

On mine it's either the the pilot light (obvious light), the pressure gone down (once a month), or the cold water pressure has changed and needs upping a bit on the intake (seasonal). And yes they are all rubbish.

I don’t think it’s possible to regret having a tent too big. And if you intend to cook in it, which you will, then you should condsider those canvass bungalow jobbies with room for a table and chairs. I’d recommend a trailer tent and they are even better because it’s like sleeping in a proper bed.

If you’re grinding at a very slow cadence you are much less efficient, even if that is your style. Some pros turn a big gear, but there are limits.

How can this be? It’s not like twice the cadence is half the energy, you still need to turn with half the force twice as many times to cover the same ground.

Spinning at 100rpm with no force at all is a lot of effort compared to a leisurely 60rpm with no resistance…or even some.
