Calculations I’ve seen say on the flat the difference is neglible for amounts under 10% of rider plus bike weight.

For climbing you would roughly be talking about an equivalent % of energy loss (more watts required) as the % extra weight. So a fat 100kg rider and bike = 1% extra energy for a kg.

    [back_of_fag_packet]So 1 kg = 16 meters or 3.6 seconds every mile of climbing? [/back_of_fag_packet]

Sounds about right? Oh and rotating weight i.e. rims & tyres are most important cos they travel furthest.

Compare that to a slight headwind for perspective.

Pick up a quality second hand steel frame, columbus or something like this inc wheels. A 105, Apex or Veloce groupset is about #400 all that’s left are the bars, tape, seat post, saddle, cables, tube & tyres.

Might be a stretch but would last years.

Nothing wrong with bar end shifters, am in the middle of fitting some shimano ones I’ve had a while on my Kaffenback. Not tried them but down tube ones are meant to be awkward. Been considering Microshift stis too.

You should take a look at EVT electric scooter’s too. No road tax no license. Limited to about 20 miles a charge though.

I’ve had an LX3 for ages now and really like it.

    +1

The LX range is a totally different class to the TZs.

Another Carradice fan, I’ve a longflap for credit card touring and a zipped roll for day trips. Can be expensive with the SQR, but quick release can be used with other bags, and still a lot cheaper than quality pannier set ups.

Things haven’t changed that much, although air cartridges to replace your spring seem popular. The 177 .22 debate continues, think you can get .20 if you can’t make your mind up. BSA have been around a long time, seem decent.

I woke dreaming I was on a train that night.

Not me but my old Border Terrier, on our evening walk if we went down a certain street he would start shaking like a leaf, panicking and pulling on the lead, just as we passed the door to the Chinese takeaway.

Never bought anything from that one.

Except that it apparently didn’t (going by midlifecrashes)

If you read what he posted then obviously not because those less academic can still aspire to getting a C grade CGSE as opposed to a qualification with mong written all over it.

Mr Clegg said neither he nor the Prime Minister, David Cameron, had been aware of the plans and indicated that they would not go ahead without Lib Dem support.

He said he was against “anything that would lead to a two-tier system where children at quite a young age are somehow cast on a scrapheap”.

I’ don’t know where to start with this bit:

After extensive discussions about the proposals, however, Mr Clegg is expected to join Mr Gove in a show of unity at the launch of a consultation on the reforms.

Just when you think Clegg can’t sink any lower. I’ve one kid midway and another about to start secondary school. Fekin Pob the a$$wipe is ruining a generation, makes my piss boil.

Don’t even start me on the cash for school repairs he siphoned off for his ridiculous pet projects, bloody criminal.

Funnily enough I was just having a look at how you get data in to SAS and is seems on the face of it like a lot work client side. Given you quote 9 hours do you think that might be the bottle neck? Certainly sounds like a network issue.

Could it be worth running the query as a make table on the SQL server, timing it, and pulling in the results of that potentially filtered at source into SAS.

I’m not surprised there were so many crashes, most of the cars were driving on the wrong side of the road.

There is a guy on ebay that sells 90mm spokes. Assuming you actually mean 24 inch wheel there are a few of those on there too.

Edit – 3 year old, I guess you do mean 12inch. Search for scooter wheels?

A hare once jumped out the hedge and proceeded to try and race me down a hill. We were neck and neck for quite some time before it decided to throw it’s self under my open pros.

Had to stop and finish it off. Don’t think you can eat hare so left it in the hedge for the local reynards.

Game birds are actually drawn to roads to find gravel, they need it to grind up their food what with the absence of teeth. Someone needs to breed a toothed pheasant.

Sold this now because it was too flexi under load… I’m 12 stone. But I had stupidly put some (mtb)carbon forks on.

    [/url]

Springiness in the frame made for a fun ride unloaded but with those forks and full panniers it was actually dangerous with fairly violent speed wobbles. Which in fairness is not what it was designed for.

Have been trying the wife’s 6kg and even for my skinny arms a couple of sets of 20 reps was quickly achievable without too much effort. Is quite addictive and more fun than dumbbells, am considering a pair of 12kgs.

Are people generally aiming for the 12 rep mark or higher?

Roughly speaking for the year 0% for the first 8k, 20% after that up to 35k. Tis not unusual for you to be taxed quite a lot for your first pay packet till they sort out your tax code, then give you it back.

I was braking as soon as I saw him move right, the thing is it was one of those really long trucks, double cab plus pick-up bit, and a longer than usual extra wheel jobbi caravan.

He was moving across like he’d forgotten he had the van on the back. If I’d braked any harder I’d have skidded or had someone go in the back of me. I took evasive action and avoided a collision.

The (4×4) 😛 driver to the right slowed down too to avoid boxing me in so I could stop being side swiped.

But whatever, can we move on.

You could have lifted off and let him slip across.

I’d no choice but to brake and swerve as soon as I saw him to avoid being hit, can only assume I was in his blind spot. But bear in mind I was in the left lane and he came from the exit lane that goes off the motorway, trying to avoid hitting the barriers.

So what would someone with a large dick have done? And how big was his dick? I notice you like thinking about other driver’s dicks a lot.

Did my annual motorway driving this week, on the way there nearly wiped out by someone undertaking me while I was overtaking a caravan, even though I was at the max speed limit.

On the way back nearly wiped out by a chavara + caravan that realised he was in the slip lane last minute and crossed the chevrons. Tried to outrun me and would have hit us if the kids hadn’t started screaming and I hadn’t swerved. Luckily the driver in the next lane saw it coming and braked too.

Am seriously considering the train next year.

And the Chinese give them a kilo of gold worth about a million?

    That’ll be carbon for yer.

While we’re on the subject of components what’s with the straight bars, binned them 10 years a go because of the crappy handling and bad wrists. Am also sure I saw some bar ends. Is this sort of retro stuff in the rules?

The diner at Toft Hill is the best bet. The blue route is worth a ride especially for hardtails, bit dull the first half but then a welcome gentle slope all the way back to the car park. And the first woods bit is best done again on the way back in reverse too.

What we need on the back of all this public attention are some real cycling lanes. The money spent by local councils on painting white lines and putting up signs no-one takes any notice of is beyond a joke. On the continent they have miles of proper cycle networks of lanes separated by curbs.

Where I live there is about a mile of one made practically useless because it’s left isolated in the middle of no-where. No-one in their right mind is going to let their kids ride anywhere near along on a main road, or behind the joke of white lines littered with parked cars with bus’es whizzing past.

If they can’t sort that out, instead of paying farmer’s for set-aside strips, pay them for new bridleways. [/ot_rant]

As above, SLX vs XT minimal difference plus any spare cash is better spent on the thumb shifters, but is quite a hike up to XTR.

Don’t forget to add cable cutters to the list of tools, and get a long length from your LBS rather than the shimano packet stuff.
