I live in the northeast and I’d settle for something like this

not sure what the demand for something like that would be in all honesty but if you can get it implemented go for it 8O

I’m right opposite Blyth Sports Centre.

sound, I was on south shore and now on the new wensleydale park estate…

It amazes me that the southern members of STW haven’t organised and done this on a England wide basis. There’s loads of well educated and competent folk here.

Because frankly England is overcrowded compared to Scandianvia, or even Scotland, and I don’t think open acces is nececeraly a good thing. We,a llong with horses, would just end up being banned from one ‘footpath’ at a time as they became unpasable rutts, generating more bad press against biking in the countryside.

I can see the merit of your argument for sure however the vast majority of “footpaths” around me are destroyed by the gymkhana club anyhow……..even the bridalways are deemed impassable during winter by the hooves of large animals and they don’t see much traffic at all as far as bikes are concerned yet the rambling crowd are still very fast to point the finger at bikes, I don’t get it

If you’re after decent riding in South Northumberland, either go and explore Thrunton with a GPS on a nice sunny day, or drill into it on Stava. We have a bike park, it’s just very hush-hush.

Been riding there for years bud, didn’t mention it due to its hush hush nature 8) the place is great but im reluctant to use it during the winter as the ground gets cut up pretty easily and turns into a mud bath and the regular builders end up spending time making repairs rather than cutting in new trails.

The reinstatement of open cast land could leave real potential for construction of mountain bike trails in the process, real potential to sculpt in at the start

Definitely, but you have to get in right at the start, before the first ground is cut. The reinstatement design is pretty much part of the process for getting permission to mine there in the first place.

Bear in mind that Northumberlandia is the spoil heap for the new active mine at Shotton. RJB or Banks or whichever collection of earth pillagists they are now, went to what was Blyth Valley Borough Council at the start of the process & said: “We’d like to dig here, in return we’ll build some jubbleys on the land.” The collection of whippet keepers and pigeon fanciers that the people outside my front door jokingly elect to office (the local intelligentsia repeatedly vote in this buffoon to Westminster), were bound to say yes – they’d not seen kahoonas like that since they bulldozed Isabella pit & the NUM club shut.

you must be pretty local to me with your references to the Isabella pit etc…….northumberlandia did inspire my thinking a little as if something was planned in from the start the potential could be huge!!

Im not wanting to make money just though it would be a cool concept, once all of the open cast is finished there is going to be plenty devastated ground in south Northumberland, not sure how deep these places end up etc but was just something I was thinking about

I opened this because I wondered how many people would use a trail park up at Wick and Thurso.

I like your quarry idea, but it does raise the question of access.

If you’re not looking to make a business out of it, why not start a pressure group to go for access like Scotland and the Scandinavian countries have? Then you will have unlimited trails.

It amazes me that the southern members of STW haven’t organised and done this on a England wide basis. There’s loads of well educated and competent folk here.

Maybe you should be the organiser, it can’t be much harder than herding cats.

Indeed and I suppose if your good with cats it would be no problem at all :-)

Yes I think access needs to be changed in the UK, out access rights etc are so tight in comparison to out friends over the border but would this make the implementation of bike parks easier? Im not sure.

On another note, I used to spend a fair bit of time up thurso surfing, nice part of the world with one of the funniest night clubs ever :-)

yeah fair point hot_fiat makes sense, there was rumors a while back of something happening up towards amble on an open cast site with dry ski slopes, bike trails etc but think it was all talk

yup I did mean north east England, my bad just went into auto pilot typing mode………

Some nice info up there so far, im certainly not saying im in the position to put something like this into practice but always interesting to see how people see ideas and what is involved in the implementation.

Racingsnail who do you use for boss service and what sort of prices are you paying? Didn’t realise the 26 ltd had carbon stays :D

My Enduro was large and I found it pretty long, the YT is certainly more comfortable. I don’t feel the need for a change in stem, have you done the sizing thing on the YT website?? It’s about the best way to get a good idea if it will suit you.
The one thing that has shocked me compared to the Enduro is the pedal efficiency, it climbs like its a HT!! Not sure if that’s also helped by the boss shock though??

No not in base models I don’t think, the pro was first with 650b and now all models, no 26 option now

I much prefer the YT to the Enduro, the YT is far more stable when flat out and feels like it climbs much better however I was running my Enduro on a coil shock so that of course did hinder it a little, I will say my Enduro felt too long and the YT perfect and I ran the same bar and stem specs on both bikes. I’m almost certain the the YT feels slacker than the Enduro too but that could all be in my head as they are pretty different when you factor in wheel size.
The 1×11 feels perfect to me, just low enough to climb and high enough for flat out blasting with plenty mid range, I have come from 2×10 and can certainly say I prefer the 1×11…..your dead on the head about cost of parts at current however like everything else it only so long before the price begins to fall.
Any more questions and I can do my best to answer :-)

I have a wicked pro 650b and it’s an amazing bike, love the way it rides and YT were very good through the whole purchase process……
I replaced my specialized Enduro with the YT and so far it has impressed me, climbs very very well, rides down much better than he Enduro so it does everything that it should do.
You have to pay either by bank transfer or paypal (the fees are big so I went with the transfer) and then once payment clears it’s about a week for delivery fully tracked.
I have a size large and I’m 6ft 3in, loads of space on the bike and it certainly don’t feel short in the top tube, all of the geometry is on the YT site so you could easily compare but remember that the numbers will be slightly different anyhow In comparison due to the bigger wheels although not the top tube length
Over all a very good experience for a top spec bike for way less than the big boys

I have experimented numerous times with saddle height and it makes very little diference to be honest,

A valid point regarding the SPD however its been over a month since i last had that bike out but i can certainly see the point and perhaps it could still be related.

Winch i will perfect my canter technique, thanks for the advice :-)

Thrunton will kill very little time unless you know where you are going………loads of riding arround the kielder area anyhow along with the two puropse built trails (deadwater & lonesome pine) you also have the bloody bush trail to the scottish border that is linked from the board walk at the top of londsome pine trail and then the link over to newcastleton trail center from the top of bloody bush. Newcastleton is an easy drive from kielder too.

As for all of this ages and hard to get too rubbish, i live on the northumberland coast and dont see any time issue getting there and its a great place to ride, depends where/what transport the OP has availabe.

There are a couple of places have log cabins etc about so try a google for them. Where in Northumberland is the wedding and people may be a little more help.

I this I will have my 2p on this one.

If the op feels so very strongly about having facilities on his doorstep perhaps it is time for him to pull his finger out and do something about it, this is by no means a personal attack on the op, I don’t know this person but what I can say is that in my local area (within 25min pedal) the local community has pulled together, gathered funds and build a variety of different trails on an old slag heap, yes it’s not very tall, yes the runs aint too long and steep but the principle is there. It can be accessed on the national cycle network so kids from all over the area have access and to be honest (I don’t know the exact figures) I don’t think it was too expensive to complete.
There is a BMX track at the foot of the trails also so all in all a good job has been done.

It appears to me that there are a lot of people in the UK who want to ride but not either help to build or help with funding. I’m no saint myself, I have ridden the said trails but as yet have not helped with funding or building however I am a member of a different trail building group that build on FC land with permission that is 30min drive from my home. I’m afraid if people want to ride on their doorstep it’s time to get the maps out (god forbid parents teach kids to read a map) and go hunting or do something about the situation.

As for the “audi drivers” comments etc, I drive said audi A4, its old with 165,000 miles on the clock, it gets me there and I work hard to put fuel in when I want to ride trails that are further afield, its what comes with hard work…….parents can easily take kids riding, I will be when my son is old enough to ride trail centres but we will also be riding the local hills (cheviots about 45min away in the car) and of course the little costal single-track gems that are dotted about my local area.

Sorry for such a long post but its nice to have a little vent/express opinions now and again ?

yeah i would like a new enduro frame at some point, deffo considering a stealth post now

    timthetinyhorse

sodar routing along the downtube could be a good shout if the hose is long enough but i suppose i could always fit a longer hose if required, would be a nice way of doing it and mean i could use a stealth (i wold prefer too nedless of cost)
Top tube and round the back may also be a good idea, might have a little play with a length of hose and see what conclusion i come too.
Yeah i love this bike, keep being tempted by something new as its getting old at 2005 and its no great climber on the coil but point it down and its amazing!

Paul123 bike-discount have the stealth for £190, i know merlin have normal reverbs for £174 but only in bigger size and i need a 30.9.

    cheers
