I did it on a HT (Soul Mk3) a couple of years ago and was happy enough with 9sp and didn’t feel the need for rear suspension.

Was going to have a crack at it on a rigid 29er this year but the last few rides have made me wonder about putting some suspension on. Its fine, but you have to concentrate a bit more on the bumpy downhills and it does take its toll on wrists and shoulders. It looks good at the moment though imo (particularly as its SS at the moment).

I was looking at weight saving and rolling resistance so I’ve taken off my dropper, swapped from 27.5+ to 29, and gone from lardy sus forks to the original steel rigid forks, but I have some Fox Factory forks that shouldn’t weigh much more than the rigid ones. I will be looking at steerer lengths this week and having a think…

@wwawas the soot is a gift that keeps on giving. I was hoovering and dusting daily out entire house for about 2 weeks after a crow swept the chimney as it fell down and then flew round the house for a couple of hours.

It’s ok, it’s only ‘cheeky’ using an elbow deliberately to the face and neck of an oppo…

It was a brutal game full of big hits, and Manu above was pushing the envelope there. IMO it’s not worthy of anything more than a penalty, but I thought there were a number of incidents that should have been looked at from both sides if that is going to get picked up. But then I had had a large number of Guinness’s and was in a pub so it is a bit hazy.

I had a O-O 456 in “That Blue” after great magazine reviews etc.
It was nearly a grand which was a lot on my meager wages, and I loved the way it looked, the colour etc, but I couldn’t get on with the ride. The BB7’s vibrated the whole bike. I couldnt afford anything else so stuck with it and kept it for ages. Eventually upgraded the brakes which stopped the vibration, and the ride was transformed when I got rid of the Mary Bars, but by then my head had been turned by various other bikes and I eventually sold it for not a lot.

I have since had Mary’s on commuting bikes and loved them, but off road they are definitely not for me.

First number below is c/c of cogs, second is thickness of cog, third is spacer width and last is the total width of he cassette

    Campagnolo
    9-speed 4.55 mm 1.75 mm 2.8 mm 38.2 mm
    Shimano
    9-speed 4.34 mm 1.78 mm 2.56 mm 36.5 mm
    SRAM
    9-speed 4.34 mm 1.8 mm 2.54 mm 36.5 mm

The bit that is critical is the 2.8mm spacer

My old Campag gear has a cassette made up of loose cogs and the 2.8mm spacers, but can’t seem to see the spacers anywhere online now

You are more than welcome to try my Ute to see how you get on with 2 out back. I have done big suermarket shopping trips on it before and the steering does get a bit vague.

Was actually thinking mine is too big!

I haven’t touched my Soul since the Orange arrived (Mk3 26er). Did the SDW in a day on my Soul a couple of years ago, and considering doing it on the Segement he Orange this year, but the lack of bottle cages is putting me off at the moment

I got a Mk2 about 6 weeks ago for exactly the same reasons as the OP, and it’s been great at the local woods. Yet to take it to Wales, but it certainly feels very stable when the speed picks up and is fine over all the local jumps and drops that I attempt (they arent very big so I will probably put a bit more air on fork and shock when I head to Wales).

Re the shock, its a 38mm stroke so getting the 25% sag is tricky. 20% is 7.5mm on the shaft and 30% is 11.25mm. This gives a pretty different feel on the bike, but pretty difficult to actually measure. I beleive the Stage 4 has a 40mm strocke so similar issue.

Its not light, so if your definition of XC is racing, you might want to look elsewhere, but I see XC as long rides and its comfy enough for me for that.

Its a bit more cash but I love my Bombtrack Beyond+. I sold my Marin Pine Mountain for it. The Marin was a lot of fun but everything weighed more than it needed to (when the forks were recalled I weighed the new ones and they were over 2kg for rigid forks) and it was a big heavy lump.

I am running some of these. Not particularly clever, but pretty heavy and seem pretty stiff. Seem to cope very well with my poor set up and riding skills. Bought as a temporary thing as I wanted to try suspension forks on my rigid bike but didnt want to commit to £400 on some new ones. I will upgrade when they die, but they go up and down just fine right now

I’ve had one for about a year. Pine mountain and now a Bombtrack Beyond Plus. The Bombtrack is lighter and faster. It’s not much slower than my posh full sus on the downs and as it’s SS it is what it is uphill. I’ve not really had the issue of it being poor in wet conditions, round here nothing really grips so I don’t feel I am at a disadvantage.

It also makes an amazing noise when you are pushing hard and the tyres scrabble for grip.

I love it, and although it’s not full fat, it still gets admiring glances from little kids

Been struggling with savage leg cramps all night, and I was only making tea! Thought I might make the party for the first time this year, but I could barely stand by 8pm. So broken.

Good work to all the riders, generally you seemed to be a bit more tired than last year? I don’t think there were any big crashes but most people seemed to have come off at some point

I think they are around 30lbs off the shelf so they aren’t ‘too’ bad but it is quite a lot for a rigid bike, and a lot of that is in the forks. I think the Alpkit wheels would fit with their adapters.
If you went Hope it would allow an easy swap to Boost and then open up more forks as there aren’t many QR tapered plus options.

As for long distances, it’s what I bought it for but never got round to doing! I will probably stick some gears on this spring and do some longer rides over the summer.

I have a 17″ down in Brighton if you are nearby and want to have a look at one.

I have one, wrecked the gears so running it SS. Great fun in the local woods, but it is a bit heavy. I added a simple t-mars dropper which helps to throw it about. Hub spacings are a bit weird, but they have been fine so not looking to change them. Wheels and tyres went up tubeless ok. Tyres I think are pretty good, but I tend to work with what I have rather than swap tyres constantly so don’t have much to compare them too.
The steel fork is over 2kg so I have just got a 29er carbon fork and in the process of going down to 2.8″ tyres that will fit in.

Also Marler got fined £20k, I don’t see a fine for MB? I know the fine came from World Rugby rather than the six nations committee, but I kind of agree that a fine for verbal abuse is a good thing. Hard hits will always happen and as a result some will go high. Before you tackle like that you know the possibility of a ban if it goes a bit wrong. The verbals are a bit unecessary and so a ban and a fine would help cut it out IMO

Tried loads for rugby after a failed hand off. This was the best and still comes with me for biking weekends as it can play up a bit after a long day riding.

    Don’t judge me!!

I dropped it to the LBS knowing it would take a bit of time to contact Liteville and get the bearings. I wanted the bearings from them as i spent some time trying to source them myself (I tried asking Liteville who never replied, I tried on here and I tried on Liteville owners on FB, I emailed BETD and got no response), but no one (until andybrad up there) gae me very much to go on, so I decide to stick with the LBS and keep the bearings that come out so I know what to order next time. The responses have been poor from Liteville, LBS has been chasing for me, problem is there is no definte timeline. I also don’t have the time/inclination/skill/tools to have a crack at doing it myself right now
andybrad, I am on the south coast, so thanks for the offer, but I’ll have to decline!!

CRAP!! Just seen your responses andybrad. My bike is still at the LBS awaiting German bearings from Liteville. Only been 2 months since I dropped it in…

I am getting them to keep the bearings so I can source them more easily next time but this is very useful

Yes I am missing it!! Just phoned them and they are still waiting on bearings from zee Germans for my Liteville, which are apparently “on their way”…

Sorry as I haven’t caught up on this all yet, but question to all those that have suffered or are suffering

Have you looked into Vitamin D defficiency? And have you had any success with supplements?

Sorry if this is covered somewhere in all the info posted already

    Thanks
