it was always the edges guitaring/producing that did it for me, so id say the streets have no name on the Joshua Tree was their pinnacle of greatness, then the fly on Actung Baby, theres been the occasional moment since then though….and their lyrics have usually been fantastic
"she wears my love like a see-through dress"
i did really like that one about his dad off a recent album, but that one about the boots….. what were they thinking!
timdraytonFree MemberLadies and gentlemen, I give you Mark Berry
ahem, drugs have no lasting affects….
timdraytonFree Memberjust done exactly that, sold 2 full suss's (trance and anthem) and a tcr roadbike, and pocketed some (not very much tbh) cash and i've ended up with a rigid hardtail (with some suss forks in the garage in case i need them)
Took it out for its first proper ride today, and i love it.
Do it!
timdraytonFree MemberI think this type of thread and every other like it ie is Ti better than steel, do I need a full suss? Etc etc etc, could be crystalised into:
light is better than heavy, it really just is.
Anyone who says anything to the contrary probably hasn't got a light bike….
I am not saying you need one either, but they feel nicer
timdraytonFree MemberHaven't watched spr for year. Isn't there a disturbing stabbing scene?
If it's the one I am thinking of it gave me nightmares, german guy apologising as he slowly stabs…… Errrggh
timdraytonFree Membereh?
i took all the bits, even cables and outers down to my local postoffice, used their scales which are the most accurate i could find (this is sadly anal i know, but hey i have the time)
added all the bits weights together, and then added 50gs for grease, and chain oil etc, and the resulting weights are above….
why are they wrong? those wheels are silly light with their aerolight spokes….
EDIT morrisons have 2 for 1 on becks at the mo this is all the justification a chubby guy needs to get inot a my bike is lighter than yours argument btw
timdraytonFree MemberYeah been toting with the idea of ditching the cranks but can't afford xtr… They are 900gs Inc bb can't Afford better.
The frame weighs 1350 the wheels 1450 the forks 1600 and weighed all the bits too, and have allowed extra for grease etc, so it should weigh as I stated unless my local post offices digital scales are wrong 😉
timdraytonFree Memberha ha!
me and the missus rent a bungalow, decor aside it is lush and has a mahoosive garden, it does look like dorian from birds of a feather decorated in the 90s, then didnt bother again….
we have proper 90s jacuzi too, the missus didnt realise not to put bubble bath in the first time and filled the bathroom with bubbles 😉
timdraytonFree Member"motherrrrrrrr all those nasty older boys are laughing at my welds again…."
now that my embarrased weld related sobbing has faded i have resolved to nearly finish the build.
Hoses need shortening and changing, cabling isnt finished, and the bar and stem will soon be changed for a 0 degree 80-90mm something, and a low rise carbony bar (if anyone has a stem or a bar with a bit of sweep out there email me, moneys waiting), i am waiting for a carbon rigid fork, and might get some black and red sids in the near future…..
Otherwise welds an all, I am very pleased, it cost all in, less than the rrp of the frame, and the frame is 6 months old (thank you Northern_peddler its great)
the wheels are ace too, thanks to adyxc (i'll get your singlespeed kit in the post asap btw!!!)
havent properly weighed it yet (but have all the bits), but allowing a bit extra and with the look pedals and a better stem it should be just under 21 lbs, with the rigid forks 19 lbs.
Its my only bike but it fits perfectly being shorter in the top tube than my old airborne.
your thoughts and mockery are welcome singletrack people
timdraytonFree MemberAm picking up an enigma ego tomorrow! Excited!
Will let u know what it's like
timdraytonFree MemberThat's what i'd do, I'd even tell her hers cost more as it comes with a special distressed finish 😉
timdraytonFree MemberVery happy with mine, I do the majority of my browsing from it ( am now)
timdraytonFree Membersam what are the forks on that singular?
njee20 you have some lovely bikes, can i pick your brains on kit choice for a build i am doing, not racing but looking to get as light as possible?
timdraytonFree Memberoh and by the way does anyone know what a set of 2005 fox f100 rl forks weigh?
wondering if its worth getting some newer sids….
timdraytonFree Memberyep and if i was trying to sell a bike that was £100+ cheaper elsewhere then i would be looking to value ad to the deal by offering extras, or servicing, something to sweeten the deal.
pauls must rely on quantity to make profit but i bet they meet very few customers, so the lbs needs to make a sale by thinking of how to win them over, its easier to make a sale when you have the customer in front of you?
to be honest, pauls dropping their pants on price should be seen as an opportunity, it'll probably stimulate loads of test rides at giant stockists, these are called leads.
when i was in sales a lead was an opportunity….
timdraytonFree MemberOff the high horse there Cullen-bay!
Lbs are businesses not charities, if they can't match a competitor on price then tough, if their service is the thing keeps their loyal then great, they will not lose out.
If the shop in question is losing money through wasted time on bike tests then they need to seriously look at how they do business!
Get a grip ffs
timdraytonFree MemberThe Ti one Gary, off a recent classifieds ad, it might actually fit too!
timdraytonFree MemberTo be honest I should probably lay off the caffeine!
Still no idea why they deleted it tho….
timdraytonFree Membercynical
nope i also sold my trance, there was some pricing confusion! ie i put the wrong price and out came the pitch forks….
I bought it as a full bike, the frame being the best bit, and i cant for the life of me find any comparable on ebay, i've stuck it up for £300
timdraytonFree Memberhttp://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87346
£265 for non disk ck wheels….
dunno about the admins i've been on there for a while but i dont post much, i was sure it had a search function, but cant find it now, oh well trawl through the for sale section and it should give you an idea.
timdraytonFree Memberyep stuck the list on there for you.
imho sales are a bit odd on there though, whereas stuff has a quick turnaround on here, for sale threads on retrobike last ages, sometimes months.
People who are really keen, ie those people who would pay £60ish for those quick release skewers for example, can take years looking for the exactly correct bits… so it might take a while to find the right buyers.
So if I had your little pile of kit i would spend my time browsing ebay and using the search function and history on retrobike and see what the rough value is from a few sources first, you'll be amazed on somethings, and maybe a bit dissapointed on others, but all in all I reckon you'll recoup a fair chunk of that £2k from the bits.
timdraytonFree MemberAh your first mistake, applying logic to retro mtb sales. Stuff that most people on here would class as old tat is very sought after by strange Europeans who sit endlessly scouring the internet for nos purple anno chainring bolts…
timdraytonFree Memberi got sky to up my bandwidth to "20mb" from 2mb, they are doing this for free for new (+ moaning existing) customers for 6 months (they'll charge you if you go 1 second over so dont forget to set a reminder to renegotiate!)
but only if you ring them and whinge enough….
who would have thought, BT reselling a service, in direct competition to their own products, and its below par…shocking
timdraytonFree Memberpsycle
hope you dont mind but i popped this thread into a new thread on retro bike, they'll be along to give you chapter and verse on what you have.
taking aside the value of bits vs what you paid for it all…..
its beautiful!!!, and will make a stunning bike with old or new kit.
Lots of people would probably insist on it being built up with all correct spec kit (ie exactly what it was originally shipped with by age etc) but id be tempted to go down the modern route.
best of luck with it, if i had the money id buy it.

timdraytonFree Memberthe bits on it!!!!
the ringle stem, the cranks, etc will fetch a fortune on retrobike, what did you pay if you dont mind me asking??
timdraytonFree Memberhmmm bright green! thats an idea
hora its an old kona, currently built up with some cheap bits….
timdraytonFree MemberHave you found out what triggers a flare up? Allergies can play a part. If you font get on with dovonex my gp put me on dithro cream which is like an industrial version, it's hardcore, u have to put it on with gloves then time it and take it off with baby oil after an hour, but it does the job!
timdraytonFree MemberMy missus could take misunderstanding lyrics to an Olympic level
"all coffee coloured drinks are free"
club tropicana wham
"save the whale, save the whale, save the whale"
enya, sail away
timdraytonFree Memberwhen i was 18 i worked at a large financial institution.
it had a massive christmas party every year in a large hotel, it was a free bar/meal/hotel for a night so being single and 18, i decided to take my mate…
we were properly into our smoke (especially the kit, bongs lungs pipes etc etc, ideally whilst listening to cypress hill, or watching withnail… how on earth was i single, i must have been sooo cool)
So we both did lots of bongs in the hotel room in the afternoon leading up to the night.
then when the banquet kicked off we were all arranged by branch round lots of massive round tables.
the last thing i remember was suggesting a red wine race to my mate.
Next morning I woke up to find our hotel room empty, and stumbling down the corridor passed a cleaner who giggled at me.
I finally found my branch and their mini bus (it was a crap company) waiting for me, nobody would look at me and my mate was very sheepish indeed.
My branch manager filled in the blanks at the immediate "formal counselling session" that ensued on the way back.
evidently after the wine we had both started nicking drinks, (even though they were free) then my mate had dissappeared.
The Chief Exec was on his way over to our branch table to speak to my boss for the first time (a big cheese this, he was on the news when mortgage rates were changed, his name reveered and spoken of in hushed tones), his hand was out to handshake my bosses, his smile frozen on his lips….
As i chose that moment, to vomit, excorcist style all over the white cloth draped round table and slide to the floor, still clutching a recently liberated G+T.
Nothing was said, the chief exec just turned on his heel and stomped off.
My boss and someone else carried me to my room, kicked open the door and there was my mate shagging the Collections lady.
A career in Finance was not for me.
timdraytonFree Memberask for neilmed in your chemist, you boil some water (let it cool down!!!!) then add the sachet, then fill up the squeasy bottle provided, and squirt up one nostril, and hope it comes out the other rather than down your throat.
it is very very unpleasant the first time, it is then very very unpleasant the next time.
it doesnt stop being very very unpleasant i am afraid.
timdraytonFree Memberwhile we are sharing:
imagine the scene I am sat at the inlaws having sunday lunch, all the family round the table.
younger brother in law still lives at home.
previous to sitting down to dinner the step father in law had asked me how to view browsing history…
Mid meal he checks his email at the pc which is adjacent to the dining table.
he exclaims loudly "anyone know what a site called grannytranny.com would be doing on my computer?"
all eyes turn to the younger brotherinlaw who goes bright red and excuses himself from the table
timdraytonFree Memberbeen sat reading all your responses and thank you.
i think i am struggling with my mates just turning a blind eye, i have always been a bit protective of him, and it guts me to see him deteriorate, and just become less and less the man he used to be.
the "i died 10 years ago" bit yesterday wigged me out more than usual also…
I think a rock bottom moment couldnt come soon enough tbh, his liver function is already damaged from the chemo and 10 years of drinking and just general unhealthy living, so something need to happen pretty soon.
i'll try and drag him to some counselling, then maybe try the sobriety race mrnutt!
timdraytonFree MemberI need the first book in the first chronicles of thomas covenant, lord fouls bane, if anyone has it to lend/sell?
i read it years ago when i was a nipper, have every other book, just need the first one again, emails in me profile.
timdraytonFree Memberonly on stw could a thread about cheap dvd's in asda, degenerate into an "I know more about DVD cases in the early 90's, than yaoo"
