Nice Mike – Chamonix, Roaches and Froggatt for the climbing pics?
Only one of me I’ve got at the moment – Ardeche last summer:
Ardeche2016 by TimB34, on Flickrtimb34Free MemberQuoting myself>>
MB Race is the only event like this I’ve done – but I really enjoyed it. Didn’t seem that technical apart from some fast descents and some steep climbs (up ski slopes!)
I think I need to add that I did the “classic” shorter route(s). I was talking to a colleague who’s done the longer “ultra” option and it sounds considerably more technical riding, with sections along ridges and harder descents
timb34Free MemberI argued that it all depends on your definition of cheating when considering “doping” in cycling
As someone else mentioned, the WADA list is all that really counts, even though it’s not perfect.
Everything on that list is there because it’s a performance enhancing substance that can really mess people up.
If you want to take anything else that is performance enhancing but has no currently known harmful effects (caffeine, beetroot juice, etc) then go ahead – any of your competitors can do the same and no-one’s going to die in their beds.
If you want to take something that is harmful, but is not on the list then it won’t help in competition and that’s just being stupid.
timb34Free MemberENVE used to recommend it for their rims!
Works really well, harder to put a hole in it with a tyre lever (unlike Stans…) but leaves a mess behind if you ever take if off

There isn’t a new one for this year yet, but it’s Christmas music so it’s not like the old ones are any more out of date
timb34Free MemberRobin Hood with Errol Flynn (who didn’t know how to fence) and Basil Rathbone (who did – and it shows!)
Rio Bravo
Blazing Saddles
Seven SamuraiI’d like to rewatch Ghostbusters, Airplane and The Blues Brothers, but I’m a bit worried that they might not have aged well..
timb34Free MemberMBRace inscriptions opened today…
sat 1st july MBUltra 70>100>140 km (140km is UCI XCM World Cup)
sun 2nd MBClassic 20>35>50 km
(there’s also an Enduro race on the Sunday)timb34Free MemberGuardians of the Galaxy? Maybe not quite epic enough but I found it a lot more enjoyable than the comic books it’s based on.
timb34Free MemberI guess what I’m asking is, am I risking too much too soon? Is it normal / safe to feel numb in the face of danger? Do I need to find more protected routes to build my trad experience rather than just climbing any MVS I find?
Hi. To add to what’s been said above, it sounds like you’re doing OK – at least you’re stepping back and looking at how you’re climbing instead of just thoughtlessly going for it until you get badly out of your depth!
Yes, I think you should concentrate on getting mileage in on easier/better protected routes to gain experience in placing gear. The people I’ve always enjoyed climbing with the most have been the competent and calm, irrespective of grade: the people who know how to place gear, who know when they can trust it enough to jump off onto it, who know when it’s just there because there’s nothing else and who can place a piece with just a couple of tries of size and orientation. All stuff that comes from experience.
I don’t think it’s normal to feel numb in the face of danger. You don’t sound like you have the experience to judge if you’re in a genuinely dodgy situation or not so you should at least be more nervous.. in fact you should be pretty nervous all the time when climbing at about VS, as the picture you posted shows it’s a grade where there’s usually a fine selection of ledges to hit. Airborne retreat shouldn’t really be an option unless it’s steep and you know the gear is good (and that there’s preferably a lot of it). Of course, as someone else said you only really learn by direct experience, so sooner or later you’ll end up hanging from gear and probably being slightly surprised that it held. But I would NOT suggest jumping off to do any kind of deliberate fall testing unless you have a lot of backup, you’re with someone who really knows what they are doing and you’re wearing a helmet (as any top piece that rips will be following you down the rope..). If you’ve been leading indoors then you already know how to fall, but you need a lot of different experience to know the difference between bomber gear, OK gear and iffy placements that are just psychological.
Someone else mentioned this, but I agree that it’d be a good idea to start getting your own gear. It’s sometimes a bit awkward on multipitch routes where it’s easier to combine racks, but if you’re just cragging then you can always use your own, and learning what you’ve got and how it’s racked makes finding the right sized nut or friend a bit faster.
I hope all that isn’t off-putting. It’s worth building the experience. Knocking off some big lead where you climb well, protect it well and then look back up the route that’s empty of metalwork is a fantastic feeling and a real achievement and something to aspire to.
timb34Free MemberThat swiss site is very good – I’ll be having a good dig around on there. The French equivalent is probably this http://sitesvtt.ffc.fr/itinerance/jura/
timb34Free MemberNot really good news; but I found it heartening how the international MTB community is helping Lorraine Truong after she bounced off too many rocks in enduro races. So I donated too.

(seen on pinkbike this morning)
timb34Free MemberI found that I can make the Decathlon ones fog up almost instantly with any kind of hard effort in humid conditions (so any time it’s raining..) but I do sweat like I am a rainforest. Some interesting looking stuff on Cyclestore today (Tifosi photochromics).
timb34Free MemberI’m a bit confused about Adidas trail and approach shoes. I’m sure I’ve seen stuff about them having Stealth rubber soles, but the current models (as above) all seem to have traxion.
Did they stop doing the Stealth soles?
timb34Free Membernever quite get these threads myself, generally I get apps I have a need for.
I love these threads, as they sometimes make me realise what other things I can do with the ridiculously under-used amount of computing power in my pocket :D
Aside from the stuff above (Strava, Keep, Banking etc), I also quite like having
SkyView (to settle star/planet discussions)
Daily Yoga (trying this out – lots of free routines)
xkcd browser (geek)
Pl@ntNet (because I can’t even tell most trees apart)
AirDroid (because not all my machines easily support media transfer mode – thanks Sony)
Tabata Timer (for Beastmaker-style hangboard timings : 7s on, 3s off!)
Viewranger (good if I remember to store maps – interested to see the skyline recogntion when it’s ported across from the iPhone version)Oh and Sky Force Reloaded, Badland and Ultraflow2 for games
Using Weather Underground for weather – most of the others seemed to require always-on data.
(I’ve also used MyFitnessPal and Sleep Better, but have stopped using them)
timb34Free MemberI’ve got one of the other Anker ones : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0109TWZ54/ref=psdc_617419011_t3_B016MO90GW
Really good sound, but annoying “Dum-dum de dum” noise on startup and shows fingerprints better than an episode of CSI. Not at all rugged so maybe not for kids.
timb34Free MemberIf it’s for road riding then you might not need a waist belt (and “not massive” should mean that you’ll never be carrying that much..)
I recently went as minimal as possible with a Timbuk2 Raider. Not waterproof, no waist strap and light enough to make me think it’s fragile but there’s 18l so enough room for shirt/pants/trousers and shoes or laptop (don’t usually carry these last two), surprisingly comfortable straps and it’s just the right size and shape to stay in place and out of the way when on the drops. And it’s machine washable for when it gets whiffy. Much nicer to use for half an hour’s road commute than the Camelbak I had before, as there isn’t a big stiff back and a lot of un-needed pockets and straps.
timb34Free MemberAnyone on this thread who hasn’t seen Star Trek Beyond really should. Just saying.
timb34Free MemberMB Race is the only event like this I’ve done – but I really enjoyed it. Didn’t seem that technical apart from some fast descents and some steep climbs (up ski slopes!) but varied and fun with a good atmosphere. Not sure if it’s the same format now, but when I did it you could choose to continue on a longer distance or stop if you’ve had enough.. or if you’d blown up your rear shock like my friend did :o
There are a few other events that are slightly outside your criteria – not in the Alps or multi-day, like the Transmaurienne, Quebrantahuesos MTB, Lozerienne, Forestiere, or even the Roc d’Azur/Roc des Alpes.
Oh, or the Velo Vert VTT festival at Villard de Lans
timb34Free MemberI went for a Z1 Compact based on size, camera, waterproofing and recommendations off here. I’ve been very happy with it, but am a bit peeved that Sony have said that they will not release an official Android 6 update (not enough memory or something…hmm..). It’s not like it’s even an old phone.
timb34Free MemberI do like Mungo’s Hi-Fi.. the longer mixes are favourites at th climbing wall :D
Think the link in the OP should be this. Nice video!
timb34Free MemberThe second one is lovely so far.. only seen the first five minutes due to dodgy hotel internet, but it helps that it all seems to be shot around an area I know a bit : Lac Salagou and maybe Montpeyroux in the Languedoc
timb34Free MemberI have a non-waterproof Decathlon gilet with the same design.
If not wearing a pack, the vents on the upper back flap in the wind and sound like I’m being chased by a flock of slightly annoyed and erratically-flying sparrows.
Good fit around shoulders and neck and very lightweight though.
timb34Free MemberI’ve had to lower the saddle 2cm below my optimum 109% to get my toes on the floor.
i’d set it up to riding height rather than ability to touch the floor height.
For more technical trails (29er hardtail without dropper, and probably not that technical…), I actually prefer to have the saddle a couple of cm below perfect pedalling height to move around a bit more instead of being smacked in the arse all the time. I might think differently if I were to ride for more than a few hours though.
BTW, very disappointed at the missed opportunity to describe your bike as “SXed up”.
timb34Free MemberHave you had a go on a 27.5 anthem SX? Bit too similar to the 29er, or does the wheelsize really make a difference felt?
I guess you really need to test a Segment to see how you like the feel of the single pivot
timb34Free MemberI don’t have one, but it has to be one of the best bike names ever.
timb34Free MemberOnly ones – another girl another planet
Along with Teenage Kicks, one of the best pop songs ever… but from 1978!d
timb34Free MemberSoundtrack to Iron Man 2. Seriously, just look at the track listing (sorry purists :D )
timb34Free MemberOakley and Moroder – Together in Electric Dreams
Incidentally, I adore this – I think it’s one of the best things to come of of the eighties (a decade that I was glad to see the back of)
But in the spirit of the thread I’d like to add
Bon Jovi – You give love a bad name
Europe – The final countdown
Nena – 99 red balloons
Bryan Adams – Summer of ’69
Kraftwerk – The model
Big Audio Dynamite – E=MC2
Prince – Kiss
Timbuk3 – Future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
Age of Chance – Kiss
Visage – Fade to grey
Yazoo – Don’t go
Talking Heads – Road to nowhere
Eddy Grant – Electric Avenue
Dead or alive – you spin me right round
New order – Blue Monday
INXS – Need you tonight
Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F
FIne Young Cannibals – She drives me crazy
And the theme from Ghostbusters.Or the Grosse Point Blank soundtrack.
Hmm, maybe the eighties weren’t so bad…
timb34Free MemberNope, can’t see either.
Some info here – https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/photos/55GTdl0ZSGE
Sounds like Google Drive might allow it (or using the presentation tool for slideshows).
timb34Free MemberUsed to be able to get the link from the picasa web interface..
Ulp. Looks like it’s been turned off.
timb34Free MemberDidn’t realise that Hermida was retiring from XCO too. Nice pic of Peaty and Minaar with him (text says that CG was there too) from http://www.pinkbike.com/news/ending-on-a-high-xc-world-cup-finals-andorra.html
timb34Free MemberI seem to remember seeing a rumour that Giant were going to be launching a new FS XC race bike (100mm 29er), to go along with the trailisation of the Anthem.. anyone seen anything??
timb34Free MemberAnyone know some good sites for replacement lenses rather than full glasses? (Radar EV) Cyclestore and shadestation seem OK, but not much choice.
timb34Free MemberSo Shimano clutch mechs shouldn’t get softer with age?
Had a Deore one for about 4000km, and there seems to be more chain rattling than when it was new, but it might just be my imagination..
timb34Free MemberTo generalise: it’ll more complex, expensive and different than he expects.
He should do it.
timb34Free MemberIf you have a couple of lessons, then surfing is easier than you think and amazing fun (speaking as a beginer myself!)
Climbing on Portland? Drinking cider?
