This tragedy and several others I have encountered has made me realise just how awful depression must be to takes ones own life especially knowing you are leaving loved ones behind

Like many others I have in the past dismissed sufferers as needing a kick up the arse. This has brought it home again that it really is a very serious illness that needs far more understanding and research undertaken into the causes and treatment

RIP and may it enlighten others to the possible tragic consequences

Nat West didn’t charge me for about eight bags worth although they insisted on it being paid into my account (money laundering avoidance apparently)

Only copper and small silver, can’t imagine drug barons laundering their ill gotten gains by this method

Get a cheap CD reader to plug in to run the discs, think I had to make my own recovery copy on USB stick for my daughters netbook

In fact know I did because I had to buy an 8gb one, might be a good idea to do that when you get it going again

Serial number for the OS should be on a sticker underneath the machine

Think each machine is different, but I have the aforementioned recovery stick for a Toshiba netbook, but its Windows 7

If its new could you not take it back?

So you think dozens of tiny intricate moving parts is somehow more robust than NO moving parts?

And the electrical circuits mix well with water do they?

Swiss Military Watches seem to survive ok for an old school product with lots of moving parts

Have to agree with Elfin on this one, old film SLR’s i’m sure would withstand much more abuse than a digital version (must say he picked a very tough one too in that FM2)

Same as my old Seiko automatic watch, been bashed crashed and submerged, can’t imagine the latest digital gizmo taking that sort of battering and still be working thirty years on

too right, I’m on 91000+ exposures after 2 years. It’s only rated to 150,000 so I have a year before it may crap out

Mine is on approx 70k from a projected 100k so potentially even nearer going shutter up than yours

I use the RGB histogram which I find far better for accurate exposure than the light/dark one.
Just get the one of the three peaks that is closest to the right nearly touching seems to work for me

Also a good idea to set the shutter speeds in smaller increments than whole stops for finer adjustment

Bearing in mind most of my shots are landscapes hence setting the aperture to one of my choice

Set the aperture you want, quick butchers at the RGB histogram, get the furthest peak on the right nearly clipping by adjusting the shutter speed and hey presto spot on exposure

Not the obvious Deep purple one, but I prefer Lazy or Rainbow’s Stargazer, there again good old Sweet Child O Mine is very catchy too

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 is not a true 1-1 macro lens although it will focus fairly close in

For true macro you need something like the Canon Macro 100m f/2.8 USM, had one myself, but didn’t use it that often.

Most of the lenses that declare themselves “macro” are not and at best give a 2-1 image

Think he probably meant manual as opposed to shutter or aperture priority

Don’t use full manual that much myself, but never use auto

What’s the STW verdict on Pentax, are they a credible alternative to Canon / Nikon?

Excellent cameras, but lens range is much more restricted than the big two especially at the long end. They do make some great lenses, but very pricy and you are much more dependant on brands like Sigma and Tamron (make some good stuff though)

Harder to find secondhand although they will take all the older range of K mount lenses, mostly manual focus though

I used Pentax DSLR’s for a while, but the availability and price of the lenses got too much and switched to Canon.

The Kx is supposedly a great camera for the money and if you are happy with the kit lenses its a great buy.Uses AA’s which some people like for the availability and others don’t because they need recharging more often

Starlings are very amusing to watch too, very sad wanting to kill living things, makes me proud to be part of the human race

Think its got a lot to do with not being the odd one out and an element of showing off.

People are very worried what others think and wouldn’t want to be seen as having a cut price wedding. Too much pressure with all the social networking sites, soon as they get the pics they are on Facebook to show/show off to their friends
The whole wedding business has got out of hand, more about what friends and family will think than enjoying the day because its what the couple want. Pure hypocrisy to get married in church when you never step foot in the place, church themselves are just as bad by taking the money.

Did you enjoy a holiday any less because the pics were crap, of course not because its the memories that matters.

Can’t blame the wedding photographers for charging what they do if they can get it, but a competent amateur can take photos that are more than adequate to keep as a reminder of the happy day

Get used to earlier mornings, lovely time of the day, just a shame you picked the winter to start with.

Absolute treat in the summer, quiet, cool and great listening to the birds singing along with the fantastic colours of sunrise

Been getting up at 05.30 for as long as I can remember and wouldn’t want it any other way, just means going to bed a bit earlier

I wasn’t criticising the firefighters or belittling the work they do, just stating the fact that they need to win the public’s support.

Do you still refuse to accept a change to your days off system?

If so that won’t win favour with many people who now have to work different hours than they used to

Yes most FF have a second job, is it wrong they’re earning more for their families

Frankly yes it is if they are not paying tax on the earnings

Unfortunately terms and conditions for many have worsened in recent years, we have had new less favourable working hours all but forced upon us
Firemen are well known for having a second moonlighting job in their long periods of days off and support may be harder to come by unless they are seen to be willing to change as others have had to

I run a Propex heater in my van

We had one of those in our camper, installed it myself and very good it was too, even put a vent in the bog/shower room
Wired it off the zig unit, just had to make sure there was enough battery power for the fan to blow the fumes out otherwise it doesn’t switch on

Had a timer too which was great for making sure it was warm after a day out and about. Probably quite pricy now, can’t remember what I paid, but it wasn’t cheap
Very good after sales service and sent me a part for nothing, that’s always a bonus

All well and good keeping all the donuts out of university, alternative is paying them dole money
This way it keeps them off the streets (and the unemployed total) puts some money back into local wineries/eateries etc and we might even get some of it back

Ideally University should be kept for the genuinely bright kids then it could be free for everyone, but for above reasons that ain’t gonna happen.

Had some great times in caravans when my daughter was young, she remembers the times fondly to this day

Bought secondhand caravans for a few hundred quid, stayed on certified sites in some lovely places for a few pounds a night and met some great people on our numerous trips

All very old tech, could get a week from a large leisure battery for the lighting and water pump with the fridge, cooker and heater running on bottled gas.Had a black and white 12in portable telly we watched the news and weather on occasionally, listened to the radio, played games and read books.

Daresay people would hate that sort of thing now with no computers, mobiles or digital television, but makes me very nostalgic thinking how much fun we had and feel very tempted to do the same all over again

Quite ironic that the building they portray as Thames House is actually the Freemasons HQ in Great Queen St.
Worked next door to it for years and recognised it first time I saw the programme.

Preferred it when the hard looking woman was in it, they always focussed on her very nice bum when she was running all over the shop, face like a smacked arse though

Image quality in general is up on my outgoing 400D as well but I think the 400D was a bit of a lemon in canon’s

Actually a very fine camera and the 10mp sensor was developed from their more expensive camera. Know a lot of people think the image quality is better from the 400D than the later models in that range

Very happy with my 40D which has a similar sensor, great for noise and excellent fps rate too.

Regarding the build quality, daresay the plastic is just as tough as the metal body, but the larger body does feel right for me and think the extra weight helps with balance when using a heavier lens.

Much better LCD, awful lot more pixels and video along with loads of new features too
Still a plastic body though and the extra pixels could make you want to buy more expensive lenses (if you haven’t already got them)

Apparently its the biggest selling DSLR in the world, no inherent faults that I have read about, so go for it I reckon

Having said all that I prefer the larger metal bodied cameras such as my 40D and the 50D can probably be bought at a reasonable price now the 60D has hit the shelves
