Sony have up to 150 quid cashback off TV’s and £50 off PVR’s, ends today though. Got lucky for once, looking for a new freeview recorder and happened to see it just in time.

Items bought direct from Amazon UK qualify and they were the cheapest too for the 500gb one I was looking at. Local store had it at 300 quid, but after the cashback got it for £185, a none too shabby saving

Get your head round exposure and how aperture, shutter speed and iso work in relation to one another, really is the key to getting the photos that you want

Don’t agree about the Understanding Exposure book, hardly mentions the histogram which is another vital aid to getting well exposed photos. I always recommend this book Exposure it might say landscapes in the title, but have never read anything which explains exposure better

Not keen on the fan heater type, but we have one with the two glowing bars as our combi boiler is so crap (shouldn’t be as its not very old)

Chucks out a fair bit of heat and the fake coals are cheerful too, could also try one of the bottled gas heaters although they are probably quite expensive to run.

We also have one of the oil filled rads on wheels for my daughters room, again because of the boiler, that is very good and thermostat controlled so keeps costs down a tad

Stuart may have gone, but Big Country with Mike Peters and Bruce’s lad Jamie stil sound pretty good, in fact very good.

Saw them in April and they are touring again in Jan/Feb playing The Crossing in its entirety

Would definitely consider the Pentax K-r, excellent price these days and built in stabilisation too

Canon 550D is another very good starter DSLR and good price as well since the 600D came out

    Must it be a Nikon?

Canon 550D or Pentax K-r are both well thought of or pay a bit more and go for the Pentax K-5

The last one has the same Sony 16 mp sensor as the 5100, weather proofed and metal bodied with excellent high iso range, also got 90 quid cashback until end of Dec

Does anyone actually have a bottle of champagne on ice for when she dies? Several people on the UKClimbing forums claim to

Not on ice, but got one in the cupboard and a rocket ready to launch

I used to supervise contractors building structures in the footway and sometimes had complaints that we had compromised the integrity of basements, cellars etc

Was dealing with one of these complaints and the woman mentioned “having the drains up” spent ages trying to explain it had nothing to do with the drains before she said rather stroppily that wasn’t what she meant

Silly cow and still not exactly sure what she was going on about

Won’t matter a jot, not exactly doing much when they first start school

Was pretty relaxed with my daughter, we sometimes went away for long weekends and the occasional holiday in term time. Even at secondary school she had the odd day off here and there if something else more interesting came up

Left with 12 gcse’s, 3 good A levels and is in her last year of an Optometry degree, so not exactly a failure because of it.

Are you intending it as your main computer using photoshop for photo editing?

Only asking because the screen will be less than ideal especially if you intend printing too, might end up with some unexpected results

Did see a Toshiba i5 laptop, 6gb Ram and 640GB HD on the black friday Amazon thing, down from six hundred to four fifty, looked pretty decent to me and bound to be repeated
    Was this one Toshiba i5

With fibre it shouldn’t matter how far you are from the exchange as the infinity is “fibre to the curb” if I am not mistaken. The only bit of copper in the connection is the bit that goes from the little green BT box that sits at the road side somewhere to your house, which is a few hundred meters at the most.

    *may not be factually correct…

Nice try there Neil, but its spelt kerb and there isn’t a FTTK

FTTC is fibre to the cabinet or in the case of fibre Dslam can be two or three miles from the customers premises which may be served by copper cable of differing conductor size or possibly aluminium. This will have a detrimental effect on the loss characteristics which in turn would cause poor broadband performance

FTTP is fibre to the premises which does in fact mean all the way to the customer and as stated is available at a few selected exchange areas

Good advice above, I looked at a s/hand Canon Pixma 9000 mkII A3 printer last week, very good price and hardly used

Not so good when I found out a full set of Ink would cost £80, add that to the price of the printer plus paper and that’s an awful lot you could spend at a printing shop

Also need an awful lot of room for it, weighed about 15kg too, unless you really need one much better to get the prints done elsewhere

They might well do, but the one they made that I bought was totally crap and went back to Amazon rather quickly

Actually bought it after seeing a recommendation on this very board, thanks very much for that 🙂

If anyone knows how to get Openreach to move a line between cabinets I’d be very grateful

You can’t end of story, cable from the other cabinet wouldn’t physically serve your premises. Even if you have FTTC doesn’t automatically mean you can get Infinity either

Some exchange areas are now trialling FTTP offering up to 100MBs, not that many yet though

One more point with Infinity, try to make sure the modem is ideally mounted on the wall with air getting to the vents, they are prone to heating up and you need an available power socket to plug it in.
Also the router/home hub has to be next to the NTE5 otherwise you will need an extension lead. Think one up to about 10m is included in the install price otherwise any changes to the internal wiring will cost 130 quid

Can get freeview via BT Vision, we always have done although the film rental is crap especially when it hangs
Had to get new powerline adapters too when they deemed the old ones to be unsafe

Don’t get me started on the free broadband, signed up for infinity and then tried to do me for 130 quid to move the internal wiring
Useless engineer commed the job instead of delaying it when I decided against paying up and then lost BB for ten days. Final straw was the 30 quid added to the bill for ceasing the BB service to go onto Infinity

In my 37th year at BT and never known the customer service to be so bad, the off shore call centres are their biggest mistake and show no sign of changing the policy

I am contracted to work 36 hours and I work 36 hours, used to be ok when it was swings and roundabouts on time, but companies can’t have it all their own way

Any extra hours are those I volunteer for and paid at overtime rate, when i’m there I work properly and then its home time and all contact is severed

Live view can also cause the internal camera temperature to rise, that in turn can cause noise, irregular colour(especially with long exposures)and make the battery run down considerably faster.

How about joining the ranks of the photographers?

Get out and about, loads to learn, not too health specific and on not such nice days do the computer side of it

I’m expecting them to announce a 70D Real Soon Now

Can’t see that happening very soon would expect a 7D or 5D update before the 60D is replaced

Unless you really want the tilt out screen, why not get the 550D?

Use East Coast regularly from Huntingdon via Peterborough to York and back, cheap enough booked online in advance, yesterday cost £34.60

Reliable, fast, clean carriages including toilets and polite staff, so no complaints from me and now have a loyalty points scheme too

Quite often pay the 1st class supplement on the way back, well worth the six or seven quid extra for a nice afternoon tea and comfortable seat in the quiet carriage.

Undertaken many different roles as technology has advanced, so reckon he is just talking a load of old cobblers
