Not sure I’d pass – been driving too long to remember the “right” way to do it.

After graduating from uni my daughter worked in Paris for 3 years as an Au Pair – enjoyed it – learned to speak French, taught English and then done a teaching qualification and is now working in a primary school in Paris. She now has a good supportive circle of friends there and is happy.

It is important that your daughter “interviews” the host family as she is being interviewed. There are good and bad working conditions/pay/hours etc Get her to ask about travel passes, pay for extra “babysitting”, time off and holidays – especially if she want to be back home for more than a few days.

I’d also consider the location of the family – stuck out in the sticks with no social life might be difficult. Working in a city/town she will meet other au pairs.

    Good luck.

Aye – original plumber would have come and fixed his mistake but now won’t be happy with a bill from another plumber. Insurance may be the only way to go now.

    Best wishes.

    Thanks Garry

It was the basic bike I was thinking about. Had a look at the Genesis Tarn as well.

Might try and get a test ride on the Sonder.

It was the Alu Transmitter I was thinking about.

Is the sluggishness caused by the tyre width or the geometry? I was looking for a “do it all bike” – don’t hammer the steep downhills like I used to to! Just some moderate trail and track riding these days.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 20
    750g butter (preferably unsalted)
    450g golden syrup
    500g soft brown sugar
    1kg porridge oats

    Method
    Prep:20min › Cook:35min › Extra time:8hr setting › Ready in:8hr55min
In a large pan, on a low heat, melt butter, sugar and syrup till runny. Mix in the oats really well, making sure none are left uncoated by the butter-sugar mix.
Pour into a 20x30cm tray lined with baking parchment. Level out the mix with a spatula. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 C / Gas 3 for 25-35 minutes. (These should look seriously under-baked, that’s the point. When they are done, if you grip the pan and give it a little wobble, it will look uncooked. This is perfect.)
Cover with a clean tea towel and leave for a whole day or overnight till completely cold. If you try and turn them out before, they will be ruined. When they are completely cold, turn them out and cut into squares. Wrapped in cling film or foil these will last a week at least.

Could well be something picked up at school – 7 weeks away from a germ invested environment may have caused her immune system to “take it easy”

Personally I do believe kids are over protected in terms of hygiene. A wee bit of crap isn’t a bad thing.

I think sometimes entering a Sportive gives some riders an incentive to train/get out and do a route/distance they wouldn’t normally do.

    Harmless fun.

The Lonesome Pine trail is decent. Worth a wee detour to the observatory on the way down.

Route around the water is good for a relaxing spin. Quiet on the east side, busier with a couple of snack stops on the West (road) side.

Ride over to Newcastlton via the old railway and return via Bloody Bush and Lonesome Pine descent is a good outing. 2 pubs in Newcastleton (next door to each other) as well as a nice cafe.

Is not easier to just do a 1 hour time trialesque ride from home?

I ride into work most days leaving between 6am and 7.30am depending on route, after a banana/flapjck start followed by a snack around 10.30.

    Seems to work. I’m 55!!

Whole family starts on Thursday, the better half and I are both teachers so we’ve been on holiday since mid June, which makes going back a bit of a wrench.

Now that’s a proper summer break! Where do you work…and are there any CDT jobs?

I’ve already been back for 2 weeks!

I met a couple on the campsite at Beadnell last weekend. They were packing up early saying in their best Yorkshire accent “We’re going home – there’s nowt to do here!”

Don’t think they were impressed when I started laughing.

Btw – Craster Arms in Beadnell serves decent scran.

Having been there and done exactly as you describe – I wouldn’t bother. Take a road bike for some early morning spins – I wouldn’t go out later in the day on some of those tiny lanes with blind corners unless you want to play dodge the campervan!
