You can remove the cap when the bolts are done up. Try it!

I have three XT, one SLX, one Hone and one Saint HTII cranksets. Not one of them can have the end-cap removed when the pinch bolts are tightened. The LH crank is recessed to clamp the end-cap when the pinch bolts are tightened.

The pinch bolts don't hold the end cap on…

Yes they do. The end-cap should not be removable when the pinch bolts are tight.

The end cap fell off the last time because the pinch bolts weren't tight enough or it fell apart. There is no other explanation.

The end cap is held on place when the pinch bolts are tightened, which means the axle is clamped in place by the pinch bolts and prevented from moving out-over by the end-cap. The end-cap should not have been able to come off if the pinch bolts were properly tightened.

EDIT pardon me Naranjada, we were typing at the same time.

Shimano are saying that the Dyna-Sys 10-speed components are not compatible with their 9-speed MTB or 10-speed road components. From here.

A web search for "Shimano Dyna-Sys compatibility" will yield numerous articles/comments.

Pinch bolts not tight enough. What condition are the splines in now?

Try Tom's. My partner uses the ladies one and she smells lovely.

I use the RRP neoprene guard that fits between the fork crowns. On wet/muddy rides, I add a Crud Catcher to the down tube. The RRP guard does pretty much everything a standard, sticking-out-the-front guard does only looks, in my opinion, much neater.

All 9-speed Shimano shifters/cassettes//cranksets/derailleurs are interchangeable.

With everything else equal, XTR shifters are much nicer than XT, SLX or Saint; even if only for their lighter operation. The shift mechanism is essentially the same, but the XTR uses extra bearings (4) over the XT (2), so giving the shift a lighter and more precise feel. SLX and Saint use plastic bushings rather than bearings so will have a heavier/softer feel. Bushings wear much quicker than bearings, too; so a year-old XT/XTR will, with comparable use, still feel as it did when it first went on. SLX/Saint are more likely to have lost some of their precision.

So, yes, the XTR is 'better' than the XT. Whether or not it's worth the price difference is between you and your wallet.

Sorry, it just doesn't add up for me and I refuse to be all British and just shrug my disapproval. Stuff the FC and all its works if the Hub doesn't win!

Well said. I'm already drafting correspondence to the FC and it would be great if more people did the same. There is a tremendous support for The Hub carrying on at GT and it surely makes sense that the FC understand. We can't make them give Emma and Tracy the tender, but the least we can do is inform them of the support they have from the community, and why they have that support.

There's a nice little descent from Gilesgate onto the river path. If you head up to Sherburn Road and take a right down William Place the road turns to a track which then takes you across a skinny bridge. Take a right at the end and there are a couple of options for getting down to the river. From the bottom, turn left and follow the path all the way along past the boat house (on the opposite bank) and turn under what used to be a railway arch. Cross the playing field, over the bridge and bear left onto the path at the bottom of the big hill thing. Go left on that until the road, cross that and you have a bunch of trails to explore in that patch of woodland.

They're great at distributing degreaser onto your hub and bottom bracket bearings, but not very good at setting your chain up for being properly lubricated.

what does my head in is the endless anthropomorphism on TV – it's a lion, it's unlikely to be 'dreaming of it's next hunt'

There's plenty of evidence that all mammals dream, so who's to say that lions do/don't dream of hunting?

The '07 and on were post mount with adaptors. Your rotors will be 160mm, 183mm or 203mm. Just check here and get the correct adaptors for the rotor you want to run.

If the seller is happy to pay for shipping including mandatory insurance & tracking, then why not? Just make sure you pack well and take photos of how you did it.

Nope, they joy's of living in Reading.

For sh1ts and giggles I searched rightmove.com and within a minute got over 10 pages of 1 and 2 bedroom flats for around £700/month. Not cheap, I agree, but easily done on a £30k salary.

…lets face it when 3 people earning ~£30k each can't afford to live independantly (sic) there's something wrong!

Is that supposed to be a joke?

If only there was some way of applying pressure to the back of the piston. In the absence of pneumatic pressure, some kind of hydraulic circuit would be extremely useful…

Might be reading too much into it, but the original death of Sherlock Holmes left him hanging on a cliff at the Reichenbach Falls, and this episode ended on a 'cliffhanger'…

It ended with him disappearing, presumed killed in a fight with Moriarty. The exact circumstances aren't revealed until The Empty House, the next ACD story in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

If you'd sold it to a stranger they would have no recourse. You didn't know and more than he did what was going to go wrong, so why should you stump up? As others have said – at what point in the future do you stop accepting responsibility? If he's a friend worth keeping, he wouldn't be trying to get you to pay for it.

Magnet is invaluable for detecting filler

Just remember top put it in a cloth/sock/rag – they won't thank you for scratching their paintwork. Had this happen to me once with a car I sold.

There's absolutely no way that you can apply nail varnish (or anything similar) thinly and evenly enough to replace a layer of anodising. Once the stanchions are worn, the only solution is to replace them.

Another reason why I don't keep a gun in the house

    By Billy Collins

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
    barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
    entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
    Beethoven as an innovative genius.

Probably just a plain Skylight or UV filter to protect the front lens glass. A circular polarising filter is a nice addition if you're taking shots outdoors.
