    STW morning snark strikes again….

It wasn’t meant to be snarky; it’s singularly important.

Your first step has to be understanding the difference between a chippy (carpenter) and a joiner. See you in a bit…

    Life is far too short.

Since we’re throwing rhetoric around, I’d argue that if something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing well.

I thought from the title that there were plans afoot to move Derby, just checking they weren’t moving it too close to me. Luckily, I got the wrong end of the stick…

Osmo. Get yourself some tack cloth from eBay. Get a good sanded finish to 120, wipe down with a damp cloth, let dry and wipe again with tack cloth – this leaves a really smooth, dust-free surface.

Apply Osmo as thinly as you can – I’d use a foam roller on surfaces that don’t have any nooks/crannies. It’s an oil, so it’s too thick if you can see roller/brush marks. Leave it for 8-10.

Use carbide paper, 220 grit, and, presuming you don’t have an electric sander, a sanding block to lightly sand the bibs that the first coat of oil has raised. Clean the whole surface again with damp cloth then tack cloth. This is really important after sanding the set oil.

Apply your second coat, again as thinly as possible. No brush/roller marks. If you use the matt finish, you could actually wipe it down with a clean rag at this point to pick up any excess – that’ll leave you a great finish. If you go for satin/gloss then you need to leave it to dry naturally.

Point of note: if you use rags to wipe up oil, be aware that they should be flattened out and left to dry either outside or over something non-combustible like a metal bucket. Oils in crumpled rags or rags stuffed in bins can spontaneously combust.

    sofaking, try this:

On desktop browser, go to your Flickr image and click the ‘Share’ icon. In the box, click BBCode and select 800×640 in the drop down. Highlight/select the code that is generated, copy it and paste it somewhere you can read it all. The important part is the farm5.staticflickr address, which will be in [ IMG ] brackets. Cut out the https to jpg part between the brackets and paste that into the ‘Insert/Edit Image’ box in STW. When you’ve pasted it in, click into the ‘Image Description’ box below – the dimensions field should now populate. Click ‘OK’ and your image will appear in the post box. When the post is published, there’s no link to Flickr or any title text, but your image will (should!) show on the thread page…

I find myself wondering who you’re aiming this at. It feels a bit too say-what-you-see, naming and describing what passes by, with a little bit of trivia occasionally thrown in. The pace of the narration tends to suggest disinterest – in what, I’m not quite sure. The break-neck speed is really dynamic if you have lots of crack, but here it just feels like you’re racing to get the current sentence over with.

I know you don’t want to spend much – understandably – but don’t underestimate the general production quality on YouTube. It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to get good quality video/audio/music/graphics and so the bar is set pretty high nowadays. Viewers will be forgiving if the content is engaging; but otherwise the numerous, better produced alternatives to your channel will take the views.

Do you have plans or ideas to develop your format? What is it that you want to bring to people?

Macs don’t file in the same way as Windows computers, so fragmentation doesn’t happen; hence, no need to defrag. A fresh OS is also the last thing to try, once you’ve done a good bit of housekeeping – https://www.computerworld.com/article/3218709/apple-mac/how-to-speed-up-a-mac-in-11-tips.html

High Sierra is the latest OS, you can’t reinstall an earlier version

Is it not simplest to source a new power adaptor? Is it just 9v? It should say on the dock what power input requirements are.

Are the garden speakers powered? How are the speakers cables connected to the audio source?

I occasionally do audio recording for documentary and, in the absence of a boom mic, generally use a lavaliere mic for recording voice. This type of mic clips into your shirt/top and I think would work well for you as it’s the simplest way for you to get continuity in the quality of your voice audio – it’s going to sound the same whether you’re narrating in your office or walking around a museum or market.

On the less expensive side of the market: RØDE do the SmartLav which connects to a smartphone, and an app for recording with. That also comes with a furry wind-jammer for outdoor recording. I prefer a dedicated audio recorder, and a small dictation device like the Sony UX560 (with RØDE SC3 adaptor to convert the smartphone jack) is tiny/light and easy to carry around. We’re not talking ENG quality audio, but light years better than what you have and absolutely good enough for this project.

Enjoyed it, but did feel like a Zep cover band writing their own songs

They’re just young, and don’t forget just how derivative Zep are often accused of being in the early days. They’re also very good musicians, so the potential is exciting and I’d like to think they’d develop their own style into their next album(s). Rock needs players/bands like this.

The audio quality is terrible, makes viewing too unpleasant. I switched off after a minute. Get the mic* further away from your mouth and knock the gain down – keep it under -6dB on the meters. Can’t give any feedback on the content as I couldn’t tolerate the over-modulated voice-over.

*I’ll take a punt and say that you also need to buy a better quality microphone.

Perhaps the OP has wooden legs and removes them before going in the shower.

surely it would be easier to remove them when you’re in the shower. That would also make them easier to clean as they’d be right in front of you.

Oh yes. Some strains of early Black Keys too, but it’s really unfair to just compare. They’ve got some great stuff going on in their tracks, they sound very accomplished. Thanks for that.

I used KwikFit last year, think it was £60. A local independent did it this year for £50. I think it’s KwikFit that charge £30 to check the system is sound, then another £30 to regas – they won’t regas without the check, which makes sense. Regards the age of the car, mine has needed doing every year for probably the last four years – it’s 18 years old now. I use it all year, the conditioned air being better for clearing mist in winter, but it was barely cool when I used it in recent warm weather.

MP Paddy Ashdown’s real* name is Jeremy. He was called Paddy at school because he was Irish. Other Irish don’t like being called Paddy cos it’s racist, though most hate the British. Prejudice is a funny thing…

Having no context for anything would be difficult, I’d expect. That said, memory is a broad spectrum, even just up to the short/long-term parts. There are some really detailed and interesting papers written on memory, not to mention a world of musing and observation on the subject by philosophers over the centuries. For example, the idea of DNA memory exists, where an individual contains, biologically, a memory which is related to their ancestors experience.

Another fascinating fact is related to the memory of butterflies. Scientitists were able to demonstrate that some butterflies retained memories (of sorts) from their pre-metamorphosis state. Caterpillars were given electric shocks to imprint certain smells, so the caterpillars would react with repulsion to those smells. They were tested again after they had transformed to butterflies and some of the insects were still repelled by the smells. Bearing in mind that a caterpillar’s brain and nervous system is essentially liquified in metamorphosis, these observations are quite remarkable.

How’s this working out for you Greg? Are the contributors working this out enough for you? You avoided my question on your last spam: what are your criticisms of Peterson? Of his agenda and his motives? Or can you only tell people what’s good for them?
