For reference, I wouldn’t take a 6 pack of lager into the pub with more or a cheese sandwich into Harvester

my mates grandparents were kicked out of the local cinema for eating sarnies & a drinking a can of stella.

They were mortified, they’d been doing it for 50 years!

but it is costing me a lot of money to store/tax/insure – circa £1800 a year

can you do anything about this?

bring the cost down and suddenly it’s a different prospect. Store it in a friendly farmers barn for £100 on SORN?

i’m sure my pump reads high. But i’m closer to HWs tub starting point than clinchers & i’m on clichers. 70kg and i last weekend i started at 20 psi.

Having said that, there is a bit of willy-waving with CX tyre pressures though, people love to boast about how low they can go.

gagues on pumps are notoriously inaccurate. Very difficult to compare.

Im stunned people have spare spokes with them when they ride? Mine would be all bent from living in my camelbak for years.

you can’t imagine people riding in any other way than yourself? they’re not ‘camelbak’ types.

local mud not only wears stuff out but will pull a derailler through the gears easily.

Proper winter bikes round here are rigid, SS, with mud tyres. When i rode MTB week in, week out we all ran this. Don;t get out so much so it;s less important.

    6/8.

CX bike died after racing on sunday. Waiting on a new hanger/ chain and mech.
Town bike is a work in progress (& has been for a year or more) needs the nexus hub mounting properly.

I’d be doubtful if they’d learnt how to handle it down a hill or in a group etc.

this has been an issue for me on my commute. Bikes coming towards you round an S-bend, they have no experience handling a bike at 15 mph. especially if it’s an electrified ductch bike – not exactly set up for swift handling.

Try doing it for a living, the last thing i want to do on my day off is tinker with my bike

book it in; you can probably get mates rates ;)

I’m not going to get away with doing progressively longer rides every weekend. If I’m very good I see no reason why I couldn’t start working some 5-6 hours jobs in occasionally, but building up to rides of 75% length of the real deal might be tricky.

commuting, intervals and core stuff. longer rides occasionally. I don;t really subscribe to the need to do long rides for training for long rides.

    when are you riding it?

The Gumtree advert for second hand pants certainly caught my attention recently

Ads are based on your search history, aren’t they?

yes & yes. i have been on gumtree recently; looking at bikes!

Probably cos even when it’s cool and Team GB haven’t been training before with the temperature turned right up it’s still bloody warm

calshot is bloody freezing. winter gear required.

wife was forced off the road – hit a kerb at 30 mph – bad back for years after. Bloke said he wasn’t there and got away with it. PC who came to investigate said it wasn’t the first time he’d done it, nor got away with it.

MIB paid for the car as it’s classed as malicious damage.

I’ve been doing the same commute on and off for roughly 10 years

+1. you start to recognise people. I say morning to all the regulars in the park/ most of the cyclists.

    We’re friendly down south though.

Who’s got the coolest bike on their commute? I see a guy who either rides a homemade (looking) bamboo bike: complete with bamboo bars!

ios 11 on iphone 6. improved battery life & reportign of battery: seems much more linear than it did before.

Lots of apps don’t work though. No openmaps; not great to discover that lost in the woods last week!

Hardly the ambulance’s fault if someone stops in a stupid place in front.

It’s amazing where you see people stop – i can’t imagine where they think the ambulance is going to go; well clearly they don’t they just stop/ pull over with no sense of surroundings.

Maybe the ambulance parking was inconsiderate; Drivers aren’t perfect. Also they get a pass, because of the job: who know’s they might just be rushing to get onto something other than parking.

    I’m constantly amazed/ dissapointed with peoples self-absorption.

Was that the Oxonian event in Oxford?

No eastleigh golf course/ fleming park. I think it was a sotonia event.

google suggests they ran it 2012,13 & 14.

I was wondering about this and I came to the conclusion you’d need about 9 tonnes of sand for a decent sized pit

Wessex CX – used an abandoned golf course; complete with bunker. It was ace – i’m not sure they’ve been back for a couple of years which is real shame.

It was my first CX race and i rode SS commuter with a massive gear. I’d love to have another crack with a proper bike/ my miniscule amount of knowledge.

I had a go at this on sunday morning in the wifes 1.8T.

Turns out 1st & 5th are not required but third is sorely missed.

You can certainly drive 2/4/6 but 25-30 mph is difficult. Also shifting from 2nd to 4th seems a big drop in revs.

Turbo complicates things as you struggle below 2k revs.

Sports centre was super muddy today. For me it was a race of two halves first half i was holding my own, somewhere in the midfield. The bike started clogging and i had to stop & lost 1/4 of a lap attempting to clear it. after that it clogged several times. I ended up running the final 1/2 of my last lap, shouldering the bike as the rear wheel wouldn’t turn. I was last across the line, to a good cheer. :D

Aims. Improve my placings (85% at Sparsholt), chase overtakers more, no chain dropping, win the sprint for the line

52/62 84% so just?! did chase overtakes did me well: I was keeping up with a friend of mine (normally in vets)
until i clogged. didn’t drop the chain – over the top of the cassette though! didn’t sprint for the line. see above.

After the race carried the bike halfway back to the car, once i’d finished my hot choc i started riding, then this happened. Hanger, chain, mech all scrap! At least i finished the race.

Had the opppsite today. Sainsburys charged us for a lemon which we didn’t buy. My wife refused to go back for the 35p.

If I stole a lemon sainsburys would be after me. I’m already crazing a lemon on the side of a cocktail.

lost a really long post and i’m not retyping it.

How you self-identify . Lots of Europeans/ US will identify by a town/ region/ country. This is less strong in the UK. Eg. Whats the local dish in guildford?

In summary brits are less interested in regionality/ national identity – partly to do with immigration & the empire. But reasonably well educated with regards to world history/ politics.

Americans are ignorant of world issues, as there education teaches locality for ages eg. my firend studied only Texas history/ geography politics until 14 then caught up on what else happened! They have much more european outlook on regionality/ nationality.

Europenas are well educated in world politics but also in regionality. Most brits (do i mean english?) couldn’t tell you a local dish – most europeans and americans could.

Also all the above is really general. basques, flemish, northern irish all exceptions to above.

i don’t get this bit – having ridden e bikes it’s not suddenly as if the cadence goes to 160 when the power kicks in?

Anyone riding southampton at the weekend?

I’m entered. If it’s dry i might ride out; my wife needs my car and i don’t know if i can be bothered to squeeze my muddy bike in her car & then clean the inside!

I’ll need to leaving spares at home & lights for the return journey though…

same as last time – green bike/ green Push the cranks kit. say hello – i’ll be near the back ;)

I quite often get the chain submerged in rivers/puddles and I presume it just washes out.

maybe you should be using green oil?

Takes about 20 minutes to fit them.

maybe if you are a pro.

I’ve done ~10 sets and i reckon it’s ~40 minutes. Even fitting a set which are set up takes about 10 minutes. No way 20 minutes the first time.

There are some really good how-to videos online (rivendell springs to mind).

+1 for sks. I was planning upgrading to PDW, but not since brexit.

    But what about toe overlap?

I have toe overlap on fixed and it only touchs stopped at lights; you just dont move your wheel that much; plus it only happens at one point in the revolution. Even weaving through traffic.

    almost 0.

I definatly have ridden to work – then ridden after work.

It would have been >50% in the previous house.

Road riding there’s loads from the door but MTB is difficult.

10 minute drive doesn’t equate to 15 minute cycle here. we’re ‘trapped’ by the motorway to some extent and many of the roads you can cycle on I wouldn’t. It involves a long and convoluted route which might take 40 mins on a MTB.

Its a shame as my commute is 14 km east and pretty nice. My OHs commute is 5 km (nice achievable distance) but not at all safe by bike.

dunno about the marathon but ridelondon riders pay their own entry fee.

It’s also one of the biggest fundraising events of the year for many of the charities.

rode yesterday after a pretty poor record for the last 2 weeks. Will continue to do at least a couple of days a week.

riding in bad weather beats sitting in traffic in a car anyday.

I guess one of the things I’m trying to figure out is what’s the best way to train my body to recover more quickly – if it’s to ride one day, rest the next, or if it’s better to ride a bit more frequently (but slower) and ‘acclimatise’ my body.

if you were writing a training plan; you would have easy days, rest days (off the bike) and hard days. You’d also have a recovery/ consolidation week every 3/4 weeks.

So week 1-3 Mon-fri 2 days easy, 2 days hard, one day off. Ride at the weekend.
Week 4 mon-fri 3 days easy 2 days rest. ride at weekend.
