    Southampton is shit for cycling

compared to what? it’s not too bad.

My route from bursledon to the uni is pretty nice. Country park to netley, off road routes to ithcen bridge. off road past st mary’s. boardwalk up the river.

council need to actually action the 10 year plan and bring in the arterial cycle routes they were planning. Difficult when budgets just seem to be slashed and slashed again.

It’s not urban areas that are the problem one, it’s suburban and edge of towns with big bussy roads and no alternative routes.

    +1.

it’s far more enjoyable as soon as I reach Allington Lane or Moorgreen Road,

I massivly disaggree – these are two of the worst parts for me. City centre ok, these two roads (no real alternatives) pretty dicey, once you get to quieter roads (cross the fair oak road) it’s much better. Could well be timing – I often cycle out of town at rush hour – although it’s the same on sunday mornings.

Too many people are ignorant or in a rush. Contrast with the netherlands – where there isn’t a cycle facility cars will happily sit behind you for a few minutes waiting to safely pass if needs be. Here someone will rush by you only to sit in the next queue.

I would be pretty dubious about modding an e-bike that you were going to use on the road.

I’d be pretty dubious if you want to use it on off road cyclepaths. my route to work is kept safe by the absence of powered vehicles (pedelecs aside) modding a pedelec into a motorised vehicle means you would be riding a motorbike down a pedestrian path. and could be charged as such

TBH I doubt that a bunch of racists would have even watched the film in the first place.

racists don’t have to be full on KKK members. offensive behavior and negative stereotypes are racist too.

I may be wrong, but chatting to my LBS I get the impression that the servicing side of things is very busy, but barely breaks even and is only really there to get people into the shop!

some shops only do/ specialise in servicing so that can’t be right – or not in all cases.

I’ve just found 4,000 petrol estates on Autotrader, which is much fewer than the 24,000 diesels, but still quite a lot.

    Here’s a nice, sensible petrol Passat estate….

passatt is exactly the example i was thinking of.

My numbers are out (was from memory). but filter by petrol estates. lots of old ones <3k. lots of new ones >20k. a handful in the inbetween bracket. half of which are r36/w8 not exactly practical family cars.

Part of me just thinks wait till more petrols trickle through. I quite liked the look of the Passat estate but, again, no petrols in my search. There was a newish passat hybrid on but that was £34,000.

+1 lots of large estate cars auto trader has not one petrol between 2k & 30k. They either didn;t make them or didn’t sell them.

I’m hanging on to my 02 plate for a while longer and will proabably still have to get a smaller car to avoid diesel.

it’s a question of intent and reception.

    intent not racist, reception racist.

I love cool runings, i’d definately dress up as Derice or Sanka (they were the cool ones). I definatley would not blackface.

my favourite coffee mug is a 16oz starbucks mug. Two friends of mine turned up at my flat with pizza and the mug whilst studying. I hadn’t been to the studio in a couple of days and they wanted to make sure i was working/ not dead. It’s my favourite for sentimentel reasons, also it’s huge.

I can only assume thay paid for said mug.

    – get a good lock

get two good locks. and learn to lock it properly.

I have the right bike theoretically chosen

shiny new bike is still shiny new bike. If it’s a theft hotspot i’d be tempted to paint it really badly. just rattle can the the frame and forks – remove decals.

    Don’t leave clothes with bike?

this. why would you? It seems like you are over complicating it.

What are you trying to achieve, a train journey in dry kit?

Problem is one of the frames I’m looking at is from Planet X, it looks great and isn’t a cheap model, but they don’t exactly have a proud history of well machined, in tolerance frames…

they have a great warranty though… OH! :?

So do the STW pedants think this is a race or a sportive, or a race and a sportive?

    http://www.golazocycling.com/Tour_of_Cambridgeshire/Gran_Fondo_Tour_of_Cambridgeshire.php

as a pedant i feel obliged to point out that the organisers state that it is both.

Gran Fondo is the cycling equivalent of the London Marathon with elite athletes starting in a Race (Gran Fondo Race) at the front followed by a Sportive (Gran Fondo Sportive).

My concern is people joining motorways with 3 trucks sat in the inside lane. See way to many people joining ‘bunched up’ already. when they realise there’s 3 hgvs where thay want to be it’ll be chaos.

Instead of roadtrains why not tracktrains?

majority of the freight handling lines and areas are gone/minimised as they were in prime retail and residential space in the middle of town.

Southampton (UKs 2nd busiest container port) residents have rejected a rail freight depot because of noise. Even if you hadsomewhere to unload the containers they can’t load any more.

student trip to milan. plane over sold, so 10 of us slept in the airport to wait for the next flight. Milan BGY is tiny – pretty provinical. i think flights stopped at 10pm.

high and low points include: midnight trolley racing. sleeping in a corridor on cardboard. being woken up by a sub machine gun toting guard. waking in the morning thinking i was spooning lucy – & fining out it it was tom!

when we eventually got to fly back the next day the security guard attempted for me to remove my trousers at the security check – i told in to do one and he let me through!

I really think riding without brakes

with only one brake. the fixed wheel is a brake. don’t perpetuate the tabloid myth.

    thomthumb

I could skid stop a lot quicker than that PC. and i don;t skid stop. my fixed wheel has two brakes.

also it looks like he’s wearing police issue boots/ no foot retention. terrible way to slow a fixie.

    plenty not worth mentioning.
trying to market internet terminals in cornershops – the terminals tere there we just had to convinve people to use them. most people had no idea what the internet was for. i think this would have been 1999

council post room. 8-4. post delivery twice a day to sort though. we would do one delivery round a day – alternating which round we went on around the huge building. sorting the delivery and the morning round took about 1:30. sorting the afternoon delivery maybe 30 mins. some days there would be a big box of mail to frank other days nothing at all. There was loads of time to smoke. I was maybe 3-5 a day when i started; i was doing 40 just 8-4 by the end of the summer. 8O Funny names on the post was a highlight of the day. Miss A Minge. yeah me too mate!!

    SSUK was there. 2011.

I ran a full on XC semi slick on the rear. that was a really bad idea. it’s pretty average southern clay/ chalky type soil. i spun, a few times.

That might raise a smile. Anyone that does stop to look at his wares will know they can get the same cheaper off eBay.

i bought an iphone lead there. no plug just the cable. knock off one of course. wanna guess the price.

    £25.

not only did i get to the weekend away and realise that 3 other people had them but i also went to tescos later the same day – they are probably a fiver.

    back on topic:

At work theres a guy who sits in a tiny portakabin to greet drivers to the construction site. (receptionist?) on his own – all day long. there really isn’t a lot of site traffic at the moment – couple of trucks a day if that!

The poor bloke in there looks like he’s about to hang himself,

    same look.

As far as I can see there’s nothing off the shelf from shimano that would work, thinking the only option might be a crank arm fitted to a single ring from another manufacturer with the same BCD

    correct.

wouldn’t be surprised if its 5-6 hours charged.

don’t know what that costs – I don’t really use the bike shop for maintenance.

phone the next two nearest shops. 3 quotes and you’ll know wheter one is quoting high.

you also have to appreciate that they will be delivering you a full bike – you expect it to be roadworthy – they will have to check your work and give a full PDI.

sant yago – some of the best tapas i’ve ever had

nemrut – pretty basic turkish family restuarant; looks like a kebab shop from the outside – the food is amazing though.

Custom House which is at Gunwharf at least has an ‘older’ feel

last time i went it mostly felt like weatherspoons!

mk IV that i have a s a loaner from the VW place is brilliant. 130k miles on it and the interior is in amazing condition. Its the pinnacle of engineering – they purposefully made the mkV interior cheaper to differentiate from Audi.

I’d buy a gti – plenty of decent ones for £2k
