14km each way here. I wear cycling kit & change at work; no need for a shower I take it steady on the way in – so i don’t sweat.

for mid winter i’ll be wearing:

winter boots
warm socks
bibshorts (keep everything tucked in)
warm tights – endura thermolite
warm baselayer – ski one from decathlon
softshell

clothes/ lunch etc carried in a rack bag.

Shoes live under my desk. I also leave a spare outfit there in case i forget bits.

If it was shorter i think work clothes (or most of them) with a waterproof jacket & trousers would do.

two that stand out.

First was in Cornwall with the most amazing view from the crem – I was young so can’t remember if the rest of it was good but it was an amazing setting.

The second was made personal by a long, well researched and very personal eulogy. The reader is a very good raconteur which helps.

Hiltingbury Gin

Hawthorns

are the two most interesting i’ve had recently and don’t own.

What other flavours does he like – it’s often easier to take this as a cue than ‘he likes gin’.

It is a pity that XC racing through the summer isn’t as popular as CX seems to be nowadays.

3 times the price here. makes a difference to a lot of people.

don’t be too keen to equate accidents with claims. Whilst the insurance company may tell you that you have to tell them even if you don’t claim. The statistics are likely to be related to claims.

I wouldn’t claim for a car park incident – anything more than a £15 mini-valet is likely be a financial write off.

it’s all i’ve ever drunk. It’s what i’d have through choice. except i now drink almond milk.

There has to be a point when you may as well pour water on your cornflakes.

which is exactly what almond milk is. 8O

bikes are easy to use and the bike lanes are great.

straying from the bike lanes can be a bit dicey.

my suggestion would be to print a map of the bike lanes and pre plan routes a little.

the app is also useful.

road bikes will sell better spring/ tour de france time but if it’s new (<3 years) adding another year to it will cancel that out.

I asked at the time they came out and lots not f people reported 6 bolt hubs were ok. Built. Mine with desire and it was fine. Swapped to SP dynamo and that’s fine too.

Ime nothing no is good for 100 mile routes. As the distance goes up the likelihood of it routing you into a nasty A road goes up too.

Cyclestreets is worth a look. But the above caveat still applies.

shimano already offer a 9T low cassette.

always though this was a neat solution – just shorten the freehub.

experiences over anything else. perhaps photos of the family/ experience.

a model to build? something to build with the grandson?

Just bear in mind that there’s not really a lot to see on a brewery tour, especially a ‘craft’ brewery.

“Here’s the brewing vessel(s), there’s the bags of hops, over there are the barrels. Er, that’s it, thanks for coming!”

Depends on the brewer. Cheddar Ales was one of the most passionate and engaging people i’ve ever listened too. Hard not to be interested; the passion was infectious. Genuinely nice guy too ‘you haven’t drunk enough’ take this 36 pint keg’!

i’m out.

it’s my wedding aniversary on the sunday. this means it unacceptable to do anything that weekend. I don’t think it helped that i first mentioned it less than 12 hours after going awol on a stag do. :|

in wake of this i’ve stripped the bike for sale – a new light weight version is on its way. next year then…

It’s uplifted = i’d do it.

In theory you shouldn’t be riding cardio too much going downhill.

have you two done a bike park? I tend to go above threshoold HR in about 10 seconds and stay there all the way to the bottom.

vitamin c + zinc to ward off a cold. I’ve had a similar cold and the fuzzy head would put me off.

700 = 622+2×38=698
650 = 584+2×50=684

difference is 14mm so bb would be 7 mm lower in theory.

My mate has swpped from 700x 35 to 650x 35 on his gravel bike to remove toe overlap. BB drop hasn’t been a problem.

Gravel bike/ CX

would basically cover 85% of my riding, but that remaining 15% only an MTB can really address

having a seperate commuter makes things much easier IME. Can run guards and racks a dynamo and most importantly great big horrible punture proof tyres. My commute has a lot of glass and any tyre that i’d enjoy riding on a weekend club run is no good at all in the week.

I want to get the bikes into as little space as possible so plan to stagger the hooks between two levels, any advice on best spacing or am I best just fitting the first hook and seeing where will work?

i think i did 300 offset. should have done more. Depends on the bikes too. I have two city bikes (swept back bars), two road bikes and two wide bar MTBs – there is a definate best arrangment.

I knew a girl who’s family imploded when her dad died suddenly. leaving another family missing their & husband dad too. He was a travelling salesman and had a family either end of the M4. He’d been doing it completley in secret for 20 years. 8O

As for actually trying to calculate gear ratios this confuses me greatly,

don’t overthink what gear inches or metres development actually means. for example:

32:36 = 24 GI = 22:25 it really doesn;t matter what a gear inch is.

Gear calculator is great as you can compare your casette to a bigger cassette. I like to think in equivilent ratios. hence the 22T granny example above.

For me Cycling UK is what the government count as cyclists. BC is racers.

Being A Cycling UK member means i get counted, when i want my bike on a train, a cycle path, or even more off road access . BC don’t deal with much of that afaik.

Beyond that it’s much of a muchness imo.

is new tiagra nicer than old dura ace/ ultegra mix. I’m not convinced. It’s certianly heavier.

It’s probaly worth exactly what i;d spend on 9speed stuff, cables and bar tape.

Just eat a good meal the night before. I’d have a small snack in the morning but i don’t like an empty stomach. this is more personal.

okay drivers do thoughtless things on a daily basis but in all the time I’ve been riding I’ve had very few actual ‘near misses’

fixed has been cheap so far:

i’m on the second chainring. third chain and cog (iirc). some of these have been forced by wanting to change gearing and not wanting to run new cog old chain.

bike will be 10 come spring. it’s been my main commuter 3+ days a week year round that entire time.

I’ve been building a nexus hubbed commuter for a couple of years – but never seem to quite finish it!
