    Can I just say…

Diecast car racing. Which I would never in a zillion years have thought was interesting but the commentators are just fantastic!

Your probably right. I’m just concerned more trails will close. The tone of their info boards are also really anti bike – which there is no need for. The NT got more with the times.

The thing that the Elon haters don’t understand is that he’s way on the Autistic (or is it Aspergers) spectrum. He’s brain is going a million miles thinking about rockets, cars etc.. human interaction is something he doesn’t understand and therefore appears to be a d**k.

It’s a trade off Uber high functioning in some areas, really poor in others.

Personally, I think his complete focus on improving the human condition is awesome. He breaks it down to first principles applies fierce logic to it. His lack of empathy (definition of a psychopath) gets him in trouble but also lets him cut through the BS.

I don’t think Billionaires are necessary good for society but Elon is the most interesting and is trying more than the rest to do good. Tesla certainly has succeeded in acceleration of electric vehicles and Space X has the best chance of making us multi planetary Is his efforts misplaced… Maybe but give me him over all the other Billionaires spending their money on yachts, cars, real estate. Give me an interesting character over the rest of the self centered lot.

I too don’t really like running. I’ve just started though… As I feel being able to run a distance is part of overall wellness…

I’ve tried the couch to 5k but it was too easy. Then I downloaded the Nike Run Club App and it’s fantastic. It’s free. Will guide you through your first four weeks and then has heaps of guided runs to suit what you want to do next.

    What can you do?

If you are a parent teach your kids to be kind, have respect for others and to interact. I am shocked at the sexism already at my kids infant school.
The Dads are to afraid to have their boys like pink or play with dolls. The Mums excuse the boys bad behaviour and their laziness with “boys will be boys”.
Their behaviour is so bad the girls are already learning to fear and not mix with them.
How can we expect good intersex relationships when they can’t even talk to each other at 5.

At work apply the Rock test https://www.google.com/amp/s/humanparts.medium.com/amp/p/73c45e0b49af

Yes call out sexism when you see it but from the experiences above be careful.

Like any change – be the change you want to see.

I have a slightly different approach. I used to get one aches but that has all gone since I’ve started doing bodyweight squats. I’ve now progressed all the way to doing single leg pistol squats. No pain anymore and more power up the hills.

Do I need to spell out that less parts equals cheaper manufacturing…. So prices will be dropping as more are made.

I was assuming some basic understanding of economics & engineering

    thewanderer

    Hahahaha.

The point is far fewer parts and far less to maintain.

    There I’ve said it 🙂

ICE vehicles will become the equivalent of horses for transport – a niche leisure activity for rich folk.

    A BMW 3 series has 30,000 parts a Tesla only 7,000.
Maintenance on an EV is tyres and brakes no oil, radiator, starters etc.
    They are faster
    Range is a non issue
They have more space inside as they don’t need the engine block
    They are cheaper to run

The economics are all in favour even with out the environmental advantages.

And battery tech and power generation is only going to get better.

Not saying that digging those jumps is sensible. More that it is an inevitable outcome of us all being squeezed into a small portion of the land. Another is the ridiculous price of housing!

Personally – We need to be encouraging 1. Increased access / National ownership 2. Rewilding (to mitigate Climate Control / biodiversity) 3. Increased recreational facilities (for the benefits we all know and love)

I think that we are going to see more pressure to change but with the current power structure…. who knows!

Lockdown has shown that there’s not enough public space and not enough options for people to recreate outside.
What do you expect people to do?
Additionally, it’s nice to see the police respond quickly to a bit of digging but if a bike gets stolen….
50% of UK land is owned by less than 1% of the population… we are going to see more of this.

Except for a year on a Transition it’s been Turner from 2003 til today for me.
I still have my 2003 5spot frame – it was a replacement for my 1st gen FSR Enduro – same suspension but so much better in every way. Rode that all across Europe, the states and Australia. Didn’t even look at another bike.
Also bought my wife a 2008 5spot (faux bar).
Bought a DW link spot in 2010 (broken seat tube replaced under warranty) plus a second hand one for her – both ridden in the Trans Provence.
Some where I dabbled with a flux (too XC for me)
After riding my mates bike I finally realised the spot was getting dated so i went on trend to a Transition Smuggler. Which was fine but then the Carbon RFXs were starting to be sold second hand.
Once you upsize the geometry is pretty comparible to today’s bikes. So we are both on to very bling RFXs (mine with a Storia shock) picked up at a reasonable price. They are all I could want in a trail bike.
So thanks Dave! Glad you are still in the business and I see a Cyclosis in my future.

Cr500dom – I too am interested in one of your Belter 20s.

My daughter was on a 16 which she loved, I then bought a specialized riprock at a good price. But it’s too heavy for her – will be great in a couple of years.

I ran 160mm Marzocchi 55 RC3Ti on mine. Loved them best fork I’ve ever ridden. But I’ve never been shy about over forking.

I could entertain selling them to you… but they’re still so pretty….. I’m thinking of hanging them on the wall.

I’ve got eight staggered in height at about 35 cm spacing

I like the idea of this. Do you mean 35cm apart. If so what’s the height spacing?

Top and tail seems a little difficult with wide handlebars. Cross bike is as close to a schmoad as I get.

Andy where did you get that!

So far I think Tracey is on to the winner. I like how I could leave my wife’s and kids’ bikes on the ground.

    Thanks guys!

Agree with many – Duxford, British Museum, IWM but also add:

Pergamon Museum in Berlin. With the freaking gates of Babylon!!!

NASA (Johnson space center) in Houston – Saturn rocket + command centres

Air and Space museum in Chantilly (where Smithsonian puts the planes that don’t fit in DC) – like The Discovery and SR-71

Brooklands in Weybridge – amazing cars, Concorde and great feel for early motor car racing

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site – freaking nuclear missile.amd you can press the button

reykjavik phallological museum – for perspective.

I’ve been thinking of something smaller and found http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/STW-Purbeck-ride

Looks good but can anyone tell me if it’s still the case?

I wouldn’t write off Tesla yet.

    1. The Model 3 has ~30k parts as opposed to 60-70k for a similar ICE car. If they can crack the manufacturing process that’ll have a massive impact on cost.

    2. They don’t have the baggage of the old manufacturers (investment in ICE, Dealer networks, unions and outdated business processes)

    3. There are probably plenty of Silicon Valley fans/investors who will help Musk out if it comes to it.

I bought two Specialized FSRs on 35% off. One for me and one for my wife. She hasn’t been on the bike much since having kids (she previously did well on the Trans-Provence). The eBikes means we can have super fun rides together at the same pace in our now really limited time together without kids.

And they are a total blast!

And they are still a workout! (though more upperbody/core focused from the downhill)

Sometimes I think folks forget that this is a hobby… and it’s supposed to be fun…  Their loss…

Just listened to a great podcast about this…

    Science Vs. Vitamins

Basically inconclusive evidence for multivits being effective but they don’t do any harm… so your decision if you want to faff / throw money at them.

I’d be up for this in a couple of years! the kids are too young.

Took them along the NDW a couple of weekends ago (1.5 yo in rear seat and 4 yo’s Isla Cnoc in tow). Met some surprised MTBers.

Cool new word for me “whataboutery” – thanks for that.

I just mean perspective is needed. We are in the best time to live right now –
there are no excuses – If you don’t like where you are in life – change it.

    Agree with lunge above.

We all feel down about things at some point but we also need to maintain some perspective.

We live (well most on this forum) live one of the luckiest countries at the most luckiest times any human has ever lived.

Especially if you are a white male – and with no family commitments – if you don’t like where things are for you, change them.

My current gig is at one of the most successful brands in the world – I am amazed when people complain – you should definitely push for things to improve yes – but complain! – go live in the slums of Delhi and see how your attitude changes.

    Studland it is.

Could someone please point me in the direction of a good route… taking in cliff views, Corfe, Square & Compass + singletrack goodness?

From my research I understand the Routes in STW use a lot of road.

    Thanks!

One thing I have found works for me is to take note of when I feel motivated and what caused me to be motivated.

Whenever I want to be motivated/get something done, I try to recreate those factors. For me headphones on/phone off can help. Sitting down with someone and nutting out plans/work also helps.

Work out what works for you and repeat as needed.

Junkyard’s story reminds me of the time in London when I saw a mail van toss a coke can out the window.. I rode up and tossed it back in. I can still see their shock as the coke splashed the dash.

Needless to say at the lights a big fat postie came waddling after me, shouting threats. I just kept riding slowly enough that he’d chase but fast enough to keep a distance. Most amusing watching him sweat his way down the street.

On a more positive note, one of my best encounters was with my wife on a singletrack in Provence. Two elderly ladies stepped off the trail to let us past, shouting “Allez, Allez!!”
