bet he is wanting dealer prices as well

More, actually! I’ve already told him that the price is unrealistic and he agreed.

    Thanks – confirmed my fears

    It starts before they’re born.

My wife’s waters broke all over my trousers and shoes, which ended up in the clinical waste.

I had to call the grandparents-to-be: “It’s a girl. Can you bring me some dry shoes?”

I was told in an interview that I would ‘do a great job’… of what was advertised.

The problem was that they hadn’t included a particular qualification in the advert but did need it. Obviously I didn’t have it so wasn’t hired.

Then the interviewer took a call on his mobile and flirted with HR. We politely declined to work together and they readvertised the role with what they really wanted. I see it as a very lucky escape.

The mention of French films reminded me of

Jean De Florette starring Gerald Depardieu
And the the follow up Manon Des Sources starring the beautiful Emualle Beart

Those are pretty much all I remember from A-level French class. Those and weeks and weeks of tedious grammar and tenses.

3 of my favourite films are on this list – I don’t know anyone who has seen them

    The Castle – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118826/
The way way back – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1727388/
    Zero Effect – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120906/

My wife says the best present I ever got her was a bespoke, personally selected, delivered-fresh-from-the-factory giant box of Seabrooks crisps.

Apparently it showed how well I know her. I just thought it was fun 😀

I know a few of these types – Everest climbers, first ascents in Antarctica, recreating Shackleton’s voyage etc.

Some work physically hard jobs and live frugally to save enough for the next trip – lots of high access rope work for example.

Others start businesses related to their fields eg climbing schools, yacht management companies. Others have seasonal income streams and follow the seasons around, eg ski boot fitting.

Can’t make it this year but it’s great fun. Highly recommended but as a runner last year I got a good smack in the chops from someone’s rear wheel.

Got my Mrs a Volvo…..they are very safe. Apparently only 11 people have ever died in a Volvo…….ever!

Presumably doesn’t include those who died of old age?

    😉

Interesting – thanks for sharing. For me, the value of HIIT depends on what systems you’re training.

I tried a HIIT approach and did ok – on 25 intense miles per week I did 10ks in 35mins. The problems for me were always feeling on the edge of injury and a lack of aerobic endurance – the dropoff in longer races is big – only 1:21 half and over 3 marathon. My 5k and 10k times indicate much quicker ability. I’m marathon training now and focusing on building a much bigger base and injury-proofing myself by running steadily before I start more intense stuff.

I run off-road in adidas and inov-8 too.

On roads, I went for Adidas Supernova Glide Boost (just trips off the tongue…) on the basis that they’re neutral, light, cushioned and in the sale at sportsshoes, wiggle etc for £60. I’m v happy with them.

Best to go into a shop but might be worth a try.

If you hate them and are size 11 I’ll probably even make you an offer…

I went to one where they played the Ramones and Queen’s Flash Gordon – completely fitting and genuinely awesome. She would have loved it.

I had a career councillor in one job. I only ever met him once. He said “look, nobody here gives a crap about your career except you so go and manage yourself and don’t expect anyone else to look out for you”

Brutal to hear as a naive graduate but very true.

I know a guy who left a relatively interesting job (relatively – for a lawyer) in corporate law for an unbelievably well-paid job as an in-house lawyer for an american investment bank.

He finds it utterly dull and completely soul-destroying and it has affected his outlook on life and his marriage but he’s now accustomed to that salary and feels he can’t leave.

Yes, he’s loaded, but he’s also utterly miserable.

All about the person’s outlook on life innit.

I’ve called him Tiny twice in emails. I now triple check I’ve got an ‘o’ in there.

    Sorry, you’ve lost me.

😀 I’m disappointed with myself. Not angry, just disappointed.

He’s (I am) a fan of minifigures and equivalent sized stuff. The teeny spaceships didn’t really do it for him (me).

My boy loves them – the Lego City ones in particular. We got the Star Wars one last year and there were a few too many tiny spaceships so he has gone back to City this year.

The Star Wars game on the Lego website is good – opening doors on the calendar gives codes to open new levels.

    Wish I was 6 again!

I’m not riding this year but loved it last time.

The one thing I got absolutely right was dropping a stash of food and drink at the bottom of the PyG lane. Was a big morale boost when I got to it (as I’d had a major mechanical on the road after Ribblehead).

I also did far too much work on the road after Ingleborough and dragged a big group to Whernside.

Remember – it’s supposed to be fun!

If you really want a pay rise you’ve got to either explain and even prove how your performance has improved since you last had a pay rise over inflation so you can show you’re worth more to them now,

This, but I might play it differently – do you have a job description? If you can show that the job description is out of date or not representative of what you do you should rewrite it. I’d submit your version of your job description in advance of the meeting and propose that this is so different from the others’ roles that it deserves re-grading at a higher salary.

I had it the other way round on my ride home yesterday:

The sunset over Sharp Haw and Pendle Hill was stunning but the semi-conscious runner I found lying by the side of the road with bleeding hands, knees and face not so much. She had tripped while changing tunes on her iphone.

I was offered an amazing job for a really interesting company. I was the succession plan for a retiring part-owner so there were shares involved etc.

I was getting married the following summer and was concerned about the amount of time away from home so was looking for some reassurance. One of the founders of the business told me “when I was in the Navy my wife always moaned that I was never at home. I spend less time at home now!”

I told them that it was the right opportunity but the wrong time and we went our separate ways. No regrets at all but it would have been an awesome job.

Not quite the same but a friend works for a guy who owns a big country house. The house needed some major structural repairs when he moved in but the stone only comes from one quarry in the country and they tried to fleece him.

He asked to speak to the quarry owner and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He bought the quarry, took all the stone he needed and sold the quarry on 6 months later for what he paid for it, effectively getting all the stone for free.

Father’s Day is about me spending time with the kids and making sure they can do what they want to ‘spoil’ me.

Mother’s Day is about spoiling my wife and giving her a day off from childcare.

Wait a minute. There’s a conspiracy theory here somewhere.

    Extra points for cobbles?

I’ve done most of this, though not in one go, and there’s not much flat involved: http://www.strava.com/routes/55772

    Edit: Only 81km but 2625m ascent – over 32m/km.

I was blown off the road on Holme Moss once – right at the top of the climb, into the barriers. The headwind dropping down to Crowden meant I had to pedal furiously instead of the usual screaming free-wheel.

This is what annoys me about buying wine in supermarkets.

This £10.99 wine reduced to half price based on buying 6 bottles plus postage. What a bargain eh?

    … and yet it’s really only a £5 wine after all: http://www.wine-searcher.com/wine-373452-0001-parra-alta-malbec-mendoza-argentina

I wonder why nobody trusts supermarkets any more!

Am currenlty trying a few different Aldi wines – I’m not keen on the NZ pinot or the Malbec but I like the Montepulciano. In the whites, the Gavi and the Muscadet are lovely.

Lost my car key in a bog on Bleaklow when out running. Didn’t have a phone with me and ended up running 15 miles home.

I spent a bit of time in Enterprise hire cars.

They all had stickers on the dashboard saying that if the odometer went to 12000(I think) I had to stop by the roadside and call them and they’d bring me another car.

I was collecting a friend from 45mins away to go for a ride. He had pedals, shoes and helmet but was borrowing a bike from me.

I drove for 30 mins and realised I had forgotten a pedal spanner so went home to get one. I turned up at his an hour late only to find that his pedals were the same as mine anyway.

I once got my hands on a couple of bottles of Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque after a Danish wine merchant went bust.

It was astonishingly nice. I drank a little too much and was hung over the next day.
