If it was me I’d probably try to make up for what I’d missed, do way too much and get injured and aggravate the chest infection.

    Try not to do this.

Your approach sounds very sensible – try to keep the heart rate relatively low until you’re back into it and fully clear of the illness and then do a few weeks of sharpening to add to the base you’re trying to build.

Reassess your targets too – you need to decide how to pace the race and train accordingly. Your old 10k time is probably not relevant any more.

    Nice fireplace!

Looks like my old house 🙁

My Mrs is getting a pancake breakfast in bed, cooked by me and the little fella, a day feeding the ducks and messing about and aubergine parmigiana for tea.

All stops pulled out – apparently Delia has a recipe for pancake batter!

    Oh, and Lindor eggs.

Running does transfer impact into your knees (or ankles/ achilles if you follow the latest fad and try to run on your toes) but there is evidence that suggests that runners suffer fewer knee problems than non-runners in later life.

Most runners have had a knee injury at some point, usually down to doing too much, too soon. You need to build up what you’re doing slowly.

Of course, there is an alternative…

Running off-road is awesome. Compare mtb to road riding and all the benefits of off-road are the same for running. And the softer ground is good for your knees.

    No rust on my Alfa

Presumably it’s never been off the workshop ramp so is always undercover? 😉

Mother in Law’s MX5 had the same problem with the warranty – unless inspected at vast expense every year, warranty doesn’t cover it. Small print’s a bugger.

I forgot my bike lock and had to go home to get it as the office manager monkey wouldn’t let me leave the bike inside.

That was a long morning’s commute.

In addition to riding like a girl I punctured both my leg (off on the first uphill singletrack) and my back wheel.

Top 10 on both runs, 40-something on the bike.

    Teaboy that is quick.

If my biking was up to scratch I’d do ok at the Grizedale Duathlon. Unfortunately I ride like a pansy.

What my Mrs really wanted was tea and sympathy.

So did you make a complaint to the police every time you were ‘assaulted’?

Was only assaulted once, so yes. Funnily enough, the police took the same view as me of that incident.

I took plenty of very hard treatment but ultimately it was within the spirit, if not the rules, of the game.

That’s fine – as per Nobby Stiles, Alan Shearer, Vinnie Jones and much of Roy Keane, though not the famous stamp. IIRC Haaland did sue Keane but I don’t know if he won.

    Oh FFS…

Get the police in? Are you serious? For a little elbow??

    Have you ever played football?

Yeah, let’s take all passion and desire out of all sports, just in case someone gets hurt.

    Jeeze….

    😀
Yes, I have played football. Lots. And to a pretty high standard. I have also been elbowed and had my car trashed by a thug who took offence to something I did on the pitch.

Duncan Ferguson spent time in prison for an on-pitch headbutt. If it happened outside a pub on a Friday night, the same would have applied.

If Rooney had elbowed someone in the head outside a pub, would he have faced different consequences? Why should people be above the law at work?

In my view it’s similar to the Ashley Cole airgun thing – If I’d taken a gun to work I’d have been fired and the police involved immediately.

    Passion and desire? My arse!

    It’s assault.

Get the police in and there’ll be a reduction in such incidents.

Wine, I’ve had a Penfolds Grange 1998, those in the know will know that is something very special, particularly 1998, and it was.

I bought 6 of these in 2003 and tried really really hard not to drink them… Ended up selling them last year for 90% profit. Wish I’d drunk one though!

In terms of scotch I was given a bottle of 30 year old single cask Glen Grant for my 30th. That was stunning.

    Thanks all for the tips.

Race was fast and muddy and great fun.

Refuelling courtesy of the Copper Dragon bistro was fantastic.

Ours was still b00b fed at night at that age and was waking up the same amount.

If they’re eating a good amount in the daytime it may be habit rather than hunger that wakes them up.

We limited feed time to x minutes, then reduced it by 2 minutes every couple of nights. After about 10 days he was sleeping through.

Seconded “It’s not controlled it’s just crying”. We never tried it and we’re glad we didn’t.

Doh1Nut – Do you mean Lady Manners? I went there. It’s still there and still doing pretty well.

Bakewell is nice but seems to be becoming a retirement town.

Some of the smaller towns (bigger villages?!) around there have a bit an an, um, small town mentality: Friday night is fight night. Tideswell and Youlgreave were the worst for this when I was there.

Having said that, it’s the greatest place to live – biking, walking, climbing literally minutes from home, good transport links, great pubs etc etc etc

Most people cite tourists as the key downside. I always took the view that ultimately they were there for the same reason I was, but I got to live there!

I sat around for 4 days, then got on a 3-day trial with a jury made up of:
1)people who thought the defendant needed a hug, or
2)people who thought he should be hung.

I was sent home on the Monday of the second week as there weren’t enough trials scheduled.

Juries are made up of 12 people selected from a pool of 16. All 16 are invited into the courtroom for random selection but first the judge asks whether any of the jury know any of the people involved, including witnesses. Anyone who knows anything is discharged. The 12 are then selected at random from those left over.

I wasn’t chosen for a case and was glad of it as the witnesses were social workers, teachers, paediatricians and policemen. That can’t have been pleasant.

I have both Montane featherlites – the windproof and the waterproof H20.

Both are amazing value for money but in terms of waterproofness and breathability, you’d be better off spending 200% more money.

As emergency backups, they’re great. And they pack ridiculously small.

When big companies ‘invest’ in new technologies the developers need to be really careful about exclusivity: there’s massively more money in it in the short-term but the new owners will seal the technology in a box, hide it in a warehouse and continue to milk the market for billions from traditional kit.

This is notwithstanding the fact that the new technology can be cheaper to use, cheaper to produce, almost energy-free and can be used even in places with no running water.

Bought one as a baby wagon 2 years ago.

    Dull dull dull dull

    But:

Immaculately reliable, cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run, comfy seats, decent space (2 bikes in the back with one rear seat down and front wheels off. Just don’t let junior put fingers in the chain).

Equivalent Leon and Focus were £1k more. Golfs were ludicrously expensive.

Oh and they all seem to have squeaky front brakes.

Most people who have it suffer from massive pain early in the day and running on it is out of the question.

It’s definitely a sports physio rather than a GP question: Anecdotally, most GPs seem to think running is just plain wrong.

You need to take coolustrum cows first milk. It probably the most natural food prodcut. It is a rich source of goodness designed to stop newborns getting sick.

Why cow colostrum? More natural than carrots?

Designed to stop newborns getting sick? Presumably you mean newborn cows?!

The scientific data indicates that cow colostrum supplements are awesome, but only if you’re a cow or a pig: Link

It’s on the Woodhead Road, opposite Holmfirth Mills.

They have a cafe, ice cream shop and a wall of fridges for yoghurts.

Went there for ice cream while the Mrs was in labour – she insisted. Do recommendations come any higher?!

My wife was in the attic the other day. Filthy dirty and covered with cobwebs but she’s good with the kids.

My wife wanted a face lift. They couldn’t do it, so for £20 they lowered the rest of her body.

If you’re being chased by a police dog, don’t run over a little see-saw, through a tunnel and jump through a hoop of fire – they train for that.

When you’re running, the force going through your landing leg is up to three times your bodyweight. It takes your legs a bit of time to get used to this, hence people saying ‘start slowly’.

There are mixed opinions in the scientific literature about technique, shoes and where on your foot to land and it gets very polarised and squabbly, just like this thread!

Be sensible and listen to your legs. If it hurts, slow down. If it still hurts, stop for a while, start slower and build up steadily.

Oh, and even when it’s rocky, cold and windy, it’s beautiful outside. Go and get stuck in!

I’m much better at running than cycling so am hoping that the legs will be ok (though the jelly legs might take some getting used to!)

Helwith is 4m/ 23m/ 4m and it’s round Ingleborough so I’m expecting it to be lumpy.

How much time can realistically be shaved at transitions? I’m going to be faffing with shoelaces but otherwise it seems pretty straightforward.
