In cases like this I really wish someone would just say it like it is – “you’re supposed to be an intelligent adult, what on earth made you think jumping off a 5-foot climbing wall was a sensible idea? … sorry, but it’s your own fault you big twit”

I understand the need to be accountable/liable for the safety of the public, but there needs to be some kind of exemption clause for stupid people.

    This.

I went to the new wall at Bingley. They asked if we were competent climbers and to prove it we had to look at some photos of harnesses, tying on and belaying and show which were right and wrong.

These were fine and it made sense as a way of demonstrating competence. The only problem was that we didn’t take harnesses and were just going bouldering!

I don’t understand flags. What are they for? Why do people get so upset about them?

I can see the point of them on boats but otherwise why do we need one?

Hint: go to see a physio

In case my waffling wasn’t clear enough, this is what I was saying! It’s complicated.

@dirtygirl – once he showed me, it just made so much sense. I’m now much more aware of how I stand, walk and even try to make sure I’m balanced when I carry the shopping! Glad you got it sussed.

    psoas muscle?

    That’s the one! Little bugger.

I forgot to say why it hurt my shin: the core is effectively a shock absorber. If the muscle is shortened it can’t absorb the impact which, of course, has to be absorbed somewhere. It happened to be absorbed in my shin which isn’t designed to do that.

Your symptoms sound similar to some I had last year – sharp muscular pain very localised near the bone so it felt almost like the bone was bruised.

I went to see this guy: http://www.carnegiesportsphysiotherapyclinic.co.uk/theteam/graeme-everard-mcsp-hpc

Turned out that a left ankle injury 3 years ago had caused me to overcompensate slightly, which led to slight misalignment in my hips. My core muscles learned this position and stayed in that position – a muscle on the right of my spine was shortened and rock-solid.

Manipulation of that core muscle, a crack of my pelvis and plenty of back rollering and glute firing exercises and I’m right as rain.

My google skills would never have got me anywhere near understanding that lot!

    Ah, some science! Well played.

Interesting reading – so it can contain this stuff but must be labelled accordingly. Does the water count as an ingredient or do you have to infer the presence of water from the presence of other ingredients like salt?

Would you like chips with that?

I’ve always assumed that allowing them to find their own food is better and the ‘working the muscles’ argument is interesting, but I’m talking with a dedicated Tesco Value fan and being accused of snobbery.

It’s not as clear cut as I hoped!

At 18 months we bought him a racing car bed and he loved it instantly.

He’s quite wriggly so we got some of these to stop him falling out: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dusky-Moon-Dream-Bumpers-Single/dp/B001PMXD5Q

I rescued a wild goat from the surrounding fence! It had got its head through the wire and its horns were acting like a barb on a fish hook. Poor little fella was really panicking.

    Carry on.

    I’ve got a 2006 Allez.

Originally 8 speed Sora/ Tiagra mix, standard double chainset and Alexrims wheels.

Last year I replaced the groupset with a compact and 9-speed Sora and gave it a rattlecan respray and some lovely Shimano RS20s.

    I bloody love it.

I’ve got a 2 year old and an 8-month old and it’s ace to be able to get a quick hour’s ride in my commute.

Bah, I’m about the same build as you and I was pretty chuffed to get to it (post-xmas diet), now you tell me I’m still a fatty

😆 My wife tells me I’m too bony as it is and has vetoed any further weight loss.

She’s also told me that she expects a 34min 10k this year. Make your mind up woman.

I weigh about 72kg and am 6ft…I didn’t think I was particualrly underweight but after a recent health check was advised to try and up my calorie intake.

I’m 73kg and 5’11. A sports physio recently told me that I’m carrying a bit and if I lost another 3.5kg I’d be a much quicker runner.

    Get on a diet, fatty!

I run 4 mornings a week and ride a 23mile each-way commute once a week. I have a coffee before I leave the house and muesli with milk when I get to work. Seems to be enough for me.

Italy is the biggest wine producing country in the world by volume (I think!) There’s a fair bit to try!

Good recommendations above – Amarone is fantastic. Brunello de Montalcino is amazing but pricey (and make from Sangiovese grapes which are used as the base for most of the Chianti Classicos).

Barolo is complicated – get someone who know what they’re talking about to help with it!

Gavi de Gavi is most definitely wine and is far too easy to drink with a lazy lunch in the sun.

Ingleborough from Chapel le Dale is great (and the pub’s good too).

Don’t do Ing from Horton – the Sulber Nick path is a loooong way.

So are you literally just sprinting as fast as you can for 20s, then rest by jogging or whatever for 10s, repeat 8 times? Are you doing anything else bar warmup/cooldown or is that it i.e. day’s training session over in 10/15 mins?

    Pretty much

10mins-ish gentle running to warm up (run to somewhere quiet with no obstacles, cars etc)

20sec eyeballs-out, absolutely fast as you can

10sec stagger, stumble, cough, try to get air into lungs

    Repeat x 8

    Gentle run home

Pint of milk (ignore that other thread!) banana, shower, water, beer, fall asleep on the sofa.

Edit – if you’re capable of doing any other training after this, you’re doing it wrong.

I did a session on Sunday, running. Legs were destroyed until today! Think I need to do them off-road in future!

I utterly hate it for that 4 minutes, but afterwards it feels great.

The kids hanging out at the bus stop thought I was crackers.

I used to live on Shepherds Hill (N6) and still park there when visiting.

It’s next to Highgate Tube for the Northern Line.

    Directions from the north:
    M1
    A1
    Turn left.

    Can’t get easier than that!

However I cannot work out how heel striking could be in any way more efficient. The impact of your heel out in front of you acts as a brake, it has to.

I think the important bit is the contact time. Bear in mind these guys are elite, so probably running about 5min miles. The time their foot is in contact with the ground is so short they’re pretty much skipping over the ground, rather than pounding it.

Edit – yep, just like that pic ^

Can’t speak from personal experience but people I’m close to have said that the metallic taste thing is horrible but does reduce towards the end of each cycle, and ginger biscuits helped with the nausea.

I hope you’re kicking its ass.

Fair points… out of interest though, how many elite endurance runners run barefoot?

Dunno about barefoot (though I suspect that if you go to Ethiopia you’ll find a few) but only 1.4% in this study forefoot strike:

    Slow down a bit…

Foot anatomy is complicated and there are a number of different needs. What suits one person may not suit another. Racing flats/ barefoot take a fair bit of work to get used to.

Try on 10 pairs of different shoes from different brands and buy the most comfortable.

For what it’s worth, there’s no ‘best’ way to run. Elite distance runners run in different ways – forefoot, midfoot or heel-striking. There was some research done at the Tokyo mara which showed no performance benefits from any particular running style. Just go out there and run how you feel comfortable.

I presume that their not absolutely foo-ked are they ? mind you for a couple of £’s1 LOL is it too much to ask for a Piccie ?

They’re pretty worn (and one of the Walshes got bashed on a rock in Langdale and there’s a small tear in a superficial seam) but they’ll be fine for a few races.

I’ll send you a pic tonight but I’ll need to post them tomorrow morning as it’s the only time I can get to a Post Office.

btw – no email in your profile

I’ve got some old Walshes and Wave Harriers in 10.5 (I think).

They’re a bit knackered but you can have a pair for the price of a pint and the postage?

Edit: actually, have both if you want – the Mrs moans that I have more pairs of shoes than she does.

If you’re working through a University’s network Google Scholar often provides a link to the full text of the article in the library.

As with all research, the most important thing is the quality of the article. This is usually measured indirectly by looking at the quality of the Journal (read up on ‘Impact Factors’ and see how good your sources are).

Increasingly, citations are being used as a measure of the quallity of individual articles and your library should be able to help you find this data for each of your sources. If you want evidence of how ace your sources are, take this data to your feedback session.

If you referenced everything properly (and didn’t just look at the abstract) you shouldn’t be marked down for this.

Juts googled those ergo ones and they look like the vegan version of a proper one…

 They are a bit hippyish!

The Mrs compared reviews for loads of these things. The Ergo reviews on Amazon are consistently amazing and back up our experience.

I heard that the Baby Bjorn ones are good too.

House we are looking at is currently on at £179,000
Went on the market at £195,000 in May 2011
Dropped to £179,000 in July 2011

They dropped the price quick! Do you know why? If they’ve made an offer on another property they might be desperate for a quick sale and this would give them a minimum acceptable figure. Talk to the agent.

The house we bought 18 months ago was on for £270, then reduced to £250k. We offered £230k and settled for £240k with extras.

Careful with those knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone…

I hate biting at these, but…. Source?

    ‘Science’ would suggest otherwise:
“Thus, our observations suggest that a lifetime of long distance running at mileage levels comparable to those of recreational runners today is not associated with premature osteoarthrosis in the joints of the lower extremities.” – http://ajs.sagepub.com/content/18/4/379.short

Last summer I brought peaches and strawberries into work.

I think I ate all of them – everyone else stuck to Double Deckers and tubs of M&S mini rolls.

I was told that I made them feel unhealthy…

Currently 15.5 stone with a little excess but toned I’m not gonna be under 15!

9min miles sounds ok at 15+ stone!

I was told by a physio that I’m carrying a bit of weight and could be really quick if I lost 8lb or so – I’m 11.5 stone! The mrs already says I’m too bony.

Teaboy – I would be keen to take the Subbuteo teams off you if you are willing to sell.

Thanks but I couldn’t bring myself to chuck them years ago and I’m living in hope that they’ll be played with again soon!

I’ll have a rummage and let you know if I’ve got any I can spare.

I had a massive clearout of Lego, Star Wars stuff, Action Man and a big pile of board gameswhen I moved house 7 years ago and regret it now!

Still have a Nintendo Game Boy, a Tamiya car, massive box of Scalextric and a Subbuteo pitch glued to a board with a load of nearly-complete teams.

If anyone’s got any lego they want rid of, my little boy would be very happy to take it off your hands.

I did one in the Lakes last year. 100ish people raced.

I was top 10 on both runs, mid-table on the bike, top third overall.

I punctured with 2 miles to go and figured it’d be quicker to push than repair. Don’t think I’d do that again.

Most time is definitely made/ lost on the bike. Take the first run steady and give the second run absolutely everything!

I worked with some food scientists who got quite a big research grant looking into biscuits (the science bit was the browning caused by cooking, not the ability to remain intact when dunked into tea)

They said that M&S own-brand digestive biscuits are made by McVities but cooked for 5 mins longer so they’re a little firmer.

Compare McVs with M&S – it’s actually vaguely interesting!
