The Riverhead in Marsden used to do the most amazing smoked haddock and pea fishcakes. If you’ve got loads of it, these would be freezable too.

    You’re making me hungry.

Depends what you want and what you like.

What do you like when riding? If you’re a strava/ powermeter addict, maybe HRM’s the way to go. If you’re a singletrack pootler, go for a muddy offroad run and don’t even take a watch – basically replicate what you find fun on the bike.

Make it fun first, then when (if!) you start to enjoy it, start to think about ways of getting faster.

At the Tebay fell race this year (9m, 3000′ including Blease Fell – 1000′ in less than half a mile) the V70 beat all the V60s!

Well done Pieface – that’s a cracking run, beating some very good runners.

I’m a commuter runner – I run to a local station on my way to work 3 days a week. With 2 small kids I don’t get time to do much in evenings/ weekends so I’m basically adapting time-crunched cycling to running and thrashing myself with intervals.

Doing Ingleboro fell race in 3 weeks, Rydal Round and a couple of shorter races over the summer, then Leeds Abbey Dash 10k in Nov aiming for 34:XX.

Leeds really really needs a storm.

It’s like a steam room here.

I’d leave the ball in her court – give her a hug, let her know you’re there if she needs you and don’t push her into talking if she doesn’t want to.

I get very reserved and quiet around my mum’s anniversary. Sometimes I want to talk, sometimes I don’t. Nobody could guess when and people asking if I’m ok just annoys me.

Bali Bali on Shaftesbury Ave is great. The Beef Rendang is amazing.

This week I heard a friend’s kid say ‘Mummy, if god is so nice, why has he given me chicken pox?’

That’s a tough one to answer!

I played a bit of tennis when I was at school and managed to nick a couple of games off the U16 European #1.

I was told that unless I was prepared to put tennis before everything else in life, I’d never be good enough to make a decent living at it. I wasn’t, so I didn’t.

I suspect that a lot of Brits just aren’t motivated or passionate enough about it to put in the graft. Just like me.

15,000 people packed onto Skipton High Street yesterday would probably disagree.

Apart from the bizarre spectacle of 3 buses advertising nasty drinks, electronics and a failing bank, I thought it was ace and I can’t wait for the games to start.

And if it was genuinely a surprise that a ‘worthy’ community member was carrying the torch instead of Usain Bolt, I can only think that you’ve been living in a cave for the last few months!

Good for wine, bulk food and home stuff (the cakes are amazing) and a really odd selection of bargains.

Otherwise, Amazon(*other websites are available) can be cheaper.

We went to look for a smallish flat screen tv. It was cheaper in Costco than any other shop we’d been in but was still £50 cheaper on Amazon.

My dad stocks up at Christmas. I get massive tubs of chocolate coated raisins and bombay mix.

Wow, that sounds like a cheery movie.

I thought the same but then watched it – it’s actually really good (in a faintly cheesy heartwarming way).

Everest Marathon is top of my list.

    Thanks for clearing that up!

Just remembered riding down the quarries in Pindale, Hope. Usual route down the track, hop off right onto one of the flat levels to drop off my favourite descent back to the track, and I nearly rolled across a guy with his hand down his lady friend’s pants.

I said ‘nice day for it’ and carried on, only to realise that I was on the wrong level. I turned round to get back to the track and went back past them. She was launching into a massive ‘I told you so’ rant and he was looking very sheepish.

    A what?

When running I found a 18lb ten pin bowling ball. On top of Grindslow Knoll, Kinder!

Thanks for these. The Sustrans looks promising but a bit convoluted! I might use bits of it.

Thanks Ton. 30 cheeky miles?! I don’t really do cheeky tbh but will have a look at the map.

I’ve only done Grizedale but I didn’t worry too much about the transitions – I took a bit of time to refuel. I lost more time on the bike 😳

I was in the top 10 on both runs and the top half on the bike (blame the puncture!) so top third overall.

As above, camoflage cream is ok but getting colour matches can be hard as your skin changes colour through the year and isn’t all the same colour anyway.

Apparently it can be linked to other autoimmune problems – if you have one (eg hypothyroidism) the likelihood of having others increases.

Most commonly grows a bit, then stops.

Rarely it can continue to grow until big patches are pigment-free.

Physically harmless but can be mentally traumatic and lead to the sufferer dreading summer as 1) they’re more prone to burning and 2) the pigmented skin tans so the vitiligo becomes increasingly obvious and they have self-confidence problems.

No effective treatment but light therapy may help. I’m not a sufferer personally but, in the experience of the sufferer I know (sample of 1 in West Yorks), the NHS doesn’t deal well with it.

Edit: referral to a specialist dermatologist can help to show the extent of it – uv light can show where pigment is being destroyed but isn’t yet visible in daylight.

The ‘Request stock alert’ for the 9-speed 11-28 cassette here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5045 may be my fault – I just bought one for my new cross bike (thanks scottyroyal!)

Road compact 50-34 and this should be enough I think.

Does he stammer at all times of the day or is there some sort of pattern?

My nearly-3-year-old stammers sometimes when he’s sleepy and can’t process the words quickly enough.

Down is definitely my strength in the fells and this seems to translate to downhill on the roads. I try to point my toes downhill and land on the balls of my feet. With a high cadence and relatively short stride length is doesn’t feel like I’m overextending or braking too much with my quads. Oh, and planning where to put my feet 3-4 steps in advance.

I tried Adizero Adios (haile’s shoes) but probably did too much too soon in them and ended up taking too long to recover from each session. I now run in the Adizero Bostons which I absolutely love.

Actually, I’ll qualify what I said earlier. If I’m on familiar ground I often don’t take anything as I know where the springs/ clean streams are.

Carrying kit (outside races) depends on the area too – I tend to run on my own and in the Lakes I’ll usually carry windproofs. On Ilkley Moor I won’t. Risk assessment innit.

stever – Capri suns have changed since I had them in my school lunch box: they now make screw cap ones!

I use an OMM waist pouch 3 to carry body cover/ food/ drink when fell running. Bit of a squeeze in winter but it all fits in there and the compression straps mean that it doesn’t bounce much. I’m really impressed with it.

For drinks I re-use capri sun pouches (skinflint, I know!) They take up the minimum amount of space when full and fold down to nothing when empty so there’s no extra bulk.

I tend not to drink anything on runs up to 90mins unless it’s hot.

Me and the Mrs have been once.

    She won £40ish.

Her winnings nearly covered my losses.

I’m now banned from placing bets.

we get feed every 25km, so food’s not an issue!

Make sure you carry some though – if you bonk or have a fall at 3am halfway between food stops you could be in real trouble.

Oh, and how are your shins?

I went for a gentle 3-miler yesterday and, apart from tight calves, am surprised at how good my legs feel. Obviously didn’t try hard enough!

    Great effort – well done!

Lumpy wasn’t it! The downhills were quick though (apart from the headwind).

Brass Monkey in Jan is supposed to be really quick, but it fills up within a few hours of entries opening.

If you’re not thinking about kids one day, look away now…

We had an old house with stone walls, original stone floors downstairs and exposed floorboards upstairs, inglenook fireplace, open cellar etc etc.

    Then had a baby.

Learning to crawl on slippy floorboards – fail
Learning to walk on stone floors – fail
Smacking head on stone hearth/ walls – constantly
    Cold – always

We now live in a 5-year old house. It’s warm, clean, safe, has a garage and is in a much better location. Life is good.

Edit: and my life is infinitely better now I don’t spend every waking moment in Wickes/ B&Q or at screwfix.com

Double edit: now I spend my time here 😳

I’m not overly bothered by the fact it’s here. I love it wherever it is. The culmination of four years’ training in so many sports, it’s brilliant.

But there’s the small matters of the Giro and the Tour first…

I have some graduated calf guards from here: http://www.redvenom.co.uk

Haven’t tried any others so I cant compare them but they seem to help. And they’re much cheaper than others due to their business model (allegedly!)

Lower flow = lower exchange of air = lower blood oxygen saturation all of which will have an effect on your performance.

This makes sense. I wonder whether if I train constricted and race with Salbutamol I’ll be more efficient…

your asthma is not impacting on your normal activity level then life is good

Absolutely. I’m lucky that it doesn’t affect me much. Lots of people are much worse off (sounds like FunkyDunk has had a rough time).

As above, I hate failing to understand things about my physiology!

Might be irrelevant in that I can’t do anything about it but I hate not knowing things!
