Tesco, Sainsburys, B&M – as long as its lump wood you usually can’t go wrong. Some bags are better than others, but I’ve never had an issue with the Tesco stuff. Other’s MMV

I had a summer job for a few weeks working on a charcoal packing line. At the end of the line were stacks of branded bags – B&Q, Sainsburys, Tesco, B&M – all of them. Same production line, different coloured bags <different pricing!>

We had families of squirrels, hedgehogs and rabbits in our garden, not to mention the number of birds nests. 2 years ago new neighbours moved in, bringing their 3 cats. Now we have no squirrels, hedgehogs or rabbits and very few birds. Last weekend one of the cats ran off with a baby blackbird in its mouth 🙁

When I was about 12 I was a caddy for him at a charity fundraiser golf day.

On one hole he wasn’t sure if he could reach the green so asked me for a short club to play safe. I told him he should go for the green and he changed his mind and let rip with a wood, straight into a pond.

He was utterly livid and I didn’t get a tip.

This thread’s an interesting read. I did some sales and escaped. The biggest change was one I wasn’t expecting – Moving from being a source of revenue to a cost and the mindset change was odd.

I felt that I relied on the sales team’s performance to pay my mortgage and, while the job was secure, being a step away from that influence was a bit uncomfortable.

    Great thread!

I’m coming back to running at 41 after a couple of years away and my main focus is to make it a habit.

Working from home is great as it gives me the time to get out in the mornings before work and I’m now up to 5 short runs per week, mostly off-road. They’re only about 5k each and taken very easily but I’m feeling so much better for it. I hope to get back to fell racing whenever they open but I’m now running for enjoyment rather than chasing times, though I did manage an 18:50 5k as a test just after Christmas.

Gro-clocks are utterly amazing and we started using them at about that age.

Possibly controversial, and not space efficient, but my best garage feature is the table tennis table.

Thanks everyone – really helpful. We have CSE already. I’ve just been asked about 27001 so we can bid for work with a new potential client.

I’m trying to work out whether the effort and cost involved is worth it for the rewards if we win this client (and others like them).

At the moment I’m working on the basis that the accreditation might take the equivalent of a couple of people full-time for a year (for a 1,000-employee business working with a lot of protected category data) and then the audits are probably the equivalent of 1FTE.

    Does that sound about right?

The TV show Teachers came out when I was 21 and I remember loving it. These teachers were cool, mature and how I aspired to be.

Watching it again this week, they’re pathetic borderline alcoholic perverts.

My wife pointed out that they hadn’t changed but I had. I’m old 😲.

The soundtrack is still great though.

Yep – the link is good. There’s loads of variation possible until Barbon so you can make it as long as you like. Just try to avoid the main Bentham to Wray road if you can.

Whitestone’s route is good too, and has ace views of the 3 peaks if you do it the opposite way round.

One of my favourite shortish rides visits Ingleton – has one tough climb, but it’s worth it: Ingleton – Bentham – Kirkby Lonsdale – barbondale – dent – kingsdale climb – Ingleton.

It’s flatter to go on the lanes between Clapham, Gisburn, Bolton by Bowland (but less fun!)

I’ve done the train to dent before and ridden home via swaledale – that was great but I fancy riding from home this time. I don’t often get a kid and obligation – free day! Strava group sounds good!

This is becoming a great ride directory!

Thanks all. Martinhutch – is 8:30-3:30 in Silsden so I have a few miles to add!

Whitestone’s cross bike route looks like a winner! Thanks v much

7 hours tops I’m afraid – just fits inside school run dropoff and pickup!

And yes, ideally riding from in or near skipton to maximise riding time

    Thanks!

I went to a taster session and enjoyed it but the instructor couldn’t demo half of the lifts as he had knackered his shoulder… lifting.

I lost a bit of confidence in him after that and haven’t been back.

Maybe ask what they’ve learned from this, what processes they’ve changed as a result and whether they’ve thanked the “lacky admin officer” for highlighting the gaps in their compliance so effectively.

I bought my 8-year old a Casio databank like this for Christmas as it was the watch I used to circle every year in the pre-Christmas Argos catalogue 🙁

I now ‘borrow’ it at every opportunity.

    Nice idea!

i’m starting a new job soon which will give me more of an opportunity to ride. I used to do a fair bit of running and followed the principle of 2 hard workouts a week and as many easy miles as I could reasonably fit in.

Seems like a sensible approach that should transfer across from running to riding I think?

I’ve been in a similar position. I saw 2 options:

    1) Fight to fix it by doing all of the above – documented examples, involving boss’s boss, finding a collective voice for the team as ‘our’ voice is stronger than ‘my’ voice

    2) Take control of the personal situation by leaving. Just the act of looking can feel like you’re taking control a bit.

One thing I’ve learned over time is to involve the team and tell them how you’re feeling. Otherwise it can be a really isolating experience.

FWIW, I did 1) for some time with limited success and eventually did 2)

I’ve only ever had manuals, though I’m not really bothered either way.

The thing that opened my eyes recently was driving a car with adaptive cruise control and lane assist. I drove from Bradford to South Wales and basically didn’t touch a pedal. I steered but didn’t really need to as the car could have done some of it for me.

I felt completely redundant and realised that things like gear sticks and pedals are just there to make us feel important and needed. We’re not. It was both great and really boring at the same time!

Firstly, I am pretty sure there is a big variance between what they pay the other 6 staff members – and my expectation will be above any of their salary. Secondly, I’d not be surprised if my expectation is above what the line manager gets paid.

If you’re worth it and in budget, they’ll pay it. How are they supposed to make a decision if you won’t tell them what you want?

    theteaboy

We now have industry-benchmarked role bands, available to all. Everyone knows roughly what everyone else is paid, by job title. Managers set what their teams are paid within the bands and are responsible for requesting any budgets for changes or new recruits.

It’s a bit exposing and massively transparent but has certainly ended Chinese whispers!

My biggest concern at the moment is how we explain whats happening to our eldest (nearly 6 years old) who is really close to her grandma

I didn’t have kids when my mum died. Now I do. I really wish I’d made some videos with her so they could get to know her a bit.

    theteaboy

Me too – my mum died 15 years ago. She was 51, I was 23. I think about her and miss her every day.

I still think of stuff I want to tell her, and it helps that I’ve got a big picture of her that I can kind of talk to. She was the glue that held the family together in lots of ways and we’ve drifted apart a bit over the years.

I use ‘would this make mum proud?’ as a way of helping with major decisions about stuff and this makes it feel like she still helps me to shape my life.

I hope you’re able to have some fun together in the time she has left.

    Best wishes

1 Most of the world’s population, billions of innocent people, are suffering in hunger and poverty, now and throughout history.
2 Evil is allowed to exist, run rampant, go unpunished, and attain positions of power more often than not. The world is unjust and life is unfair. Good people suffer and die young. And animals have to kill each other for food.
God is all-powerful and all-good, yet allows #1 and #2 to exist, both now and throughout history.

All three of the above CANNOT logically co-exist at the same time. The only logical possibilities are:

    a) God/the Creator is not all powerful and cannot stop evil and suffering. (if so, then how did he create the whole universe?)
    b) God/the Creator is evil, or not good, or doesn’t care. Or he has an evil side as well as a good side, like we do.
    c) God doesn’t exist.
    d) God/the Creator is nothing like what you think he is, or is something beyond your comprehension.
    e) God/the Creator lets suffering and evil exist for reasons beyond your comprehension, and/or does not have the same morals that you do.

There was a monthly 5K race held at Camp Bastion every month when I was there. I think the fastest time I saw was just over 15 mins.

By an Athersmith? I’ve raced against them and they’re quick!

I think you can do this.

Based on what you said, you only did 100 runs (av 2/week for a year) to knock 7 mins off. To me, that shows some potential and some ability.

I’d suggest getting to an average of 25-30miles per week over the next 6 months, over 4-5 runs at an easy pace. When you’re comfortably there, replace a couple of those runs with tempos (20mins pretty hard) and a session of intervals of 3-5min efforts per week.

If you keep that up, I think you’ll be sub-20 by the end of the year.

(I did similar and went from 56min 10k to 43min in a year. I’m now at 35min 10k and 17:15 5k. Not particularly quick but 30mpw is the most I can sustainably do)

Much more visibility on the market means everyone’s more aware of the right price these days so it has reduced the opportunity to price high and bank big profits from non-hagglers!

One thing dealers hate (apparently!) is cars sitting on the forecourt for months – both depreciating and taking up space for quicker-moving stock. If you can find one that’s been for sale a while, there’s still the opportunity for discounts, though you have to question why it hasn’t sold in the first place!

Are you confident that you can do the things in the job description?

If not, you’re probably in the wrong place.

If so, the interview really isn’t trying to trip you up – it’s trying to get you to talk about the one thing you know more than anyone else in the world about – yourself!

I find that if I frame it that way – it’s telling them about me – it’s much easier than trying to prep for silly questions that are just a way of finding out more about you as a person.

We had an Adventure Zooom (same as Ridgeback Scoot I think?) and an Islabike Rothan.

The Islabike feels better but was double the price. The Zoom came with 2 lengths of seatpost which was a nice touch. The kids loved both and transitioned to pedals really fast.

We’ve had one in a 2011 Octavia for the last 5 years with no problems at all.
