where is this event starting from?

Ton, it’s the ride I took you on last year, mate. Starts, more or less, at Ryburn Valley High School.

I’ll be doing it again – it’s my favourite route of the local challenge events. Last hill’s a bit of a bugger, I cramped on that last year too. The descent off Midgely Moor will be interesting if it keeps raining between now and the event.

No bike should be clean enough to lean against a cream settee in your front room.

Looks like it's been swapped off a display bike. Very poor.

You had knee trouble with clipless?
You didn't have knee trouble with flats?
    You have to ask?
A pair of 5:10s and some Azonic A-Frames (currently only £32 at CRC) will see you right.

Build a booter if it's only 9ft. Much less noticeable and much more fun.

I'm a bit stuck for time next week mate. Plus, I've entered the HVMBC next Sun, so don't wanna bust me nuts midweek chasing you up every bloody hill over there!
In fact, I'm planning to ride the course tomorrow, but I've not ridden the event since they changed the route so there's a few sections I'm unsure of :-/

East Bay Ray – chatted on and off for half an hour by the merchandise stall after the DKs played Manchester Academy a couple of years ago.

Gene Krantz – famous for his 'Gentlemen, failure is not an option' quote when in charge of the failed Apollo 13 mission to the moon (character played by Ed Harris in the film). He was stood next to the Apollo spacecraft at Kennedy Space Centre.

The original Wailers (of Bob Marley and the… fame) – stayed in the same hotel as us in Whitley Bay after playing at the Fish Quay Festival in Tynemouth several years ago. Partied all night.

Recently stayed at the same chalet in St Jean d'Aulps as Chris Kovarik, Matti Lehikoinen & Claire Boucher. At various times Brendan Fairclough, Matt Simmonds, Andrew Neethling and Nigel Page were also around.

Used to chat to ex-Hudds Town footballers Steve Kindon and Keiron O'Regan in the garage opposite where I used to work.

Enter a cross race this winter, that'll put your self-beliefs into perspective.

    HTH.

He's not wrong y'know. I did this recently – hardest 45 minutes I've ever had on a (mountain) bike. The lack of respite due to there being no 'proper' descents really takes its toll in the latter stages when you're not used to it. Found out at the finish that I was comfortably beaten by Chipps (on his cross bike), but I didn't come last, which was my primary motivation.

TJ, rather worringly I seem to be agreeing with you on quite a lot at the moment. Is there any cure for this condition?

Wear a helmet. But not if you're only going to the shops. It's a well known fact that the pavements are softer when 'you're going to the shops', so if you fall off you won't suffer any impact injuries. Or rotational ones either.

If it's a range of cleaning and lubing products you're after, then Finesse is the brand to look out for. Manufactured in Yorkshire and specifically formulated for MTBs (not as a caravan cleaner, like Fenwicks was originally developed for).

I found the same problem (same tyre, same rim, similar pressure) when I had a pair of FAs. The sidewall seems very flimsy to me. Sacked them off for High Rollers and haven't had a pinch flat in around 4 years now.

Had about a quarter of the rim peel off an old rim brake front wheel once. Used a series of zip ties wrapped straight round the rim and tyre to keep the tyre in place and enable me to ride the 4 miles or so back to the car.
