Schwalbe Durano Plus. They used to be folders only, but the new wire bead version has just come out.

Unfortunately I eventually had to sever the connection on my wife signal after struggling with a difficult period of erratic reception, eventually diagnosed as a bi-polar malfunction.
Since then I’ve had the opportunity to demo several different models, with varying degrees of user satisfaction. I’ve also discovered several online providers, but have learned to become wary of the image, date of manufacture and accompanying technical data as often one, all, or a combination bear little resemblance to the actual component.

I was busy using the work’s franking machine on around 1300 cvmbc entry form envelopes today. Mid-way through, the franking machine ran out of postage ‘credit’ so I had to put some more on. As it did this it also did some ‘routine updates’ at the same time. Once I started franking again the blimmin’ price had gone up from 31p each to 33p each. Another 750 x 2p means I need an extra entry just to get the postage cost back. Bugger!

I’ve just had to change one of the bearings in a new set of custom road wheels built on Pro3s. This was the front wheel though – it had developed significant sideways movement after around 3 weeks and maybe 500 miles. Easy job to do, despite my disappointment that I’ve had to do it so soon. I didn’t think the faff of phoning/returning/waiting etc was worth the effort really, so I’ve sorted it myself. The bearings will keep ‘going’ and I’ll keep replacing them. It’s no biggie, so I’ll deal with it as and when necessary.

Not saying that that’s what you should do (in your situation I’d probably phone the very helpful chaps at Hope first for a chat), but at least you know you’re not alone with a similar issue.

According to Endomondo, in Feb I’ve done:

    Mileage: 768
    Ascent: 73,307ft

All on tarmac and all in the 53t ring. It’s a bit lumpy here in Yorkshire!

I recently got an Ultegra 6700 chainset & bb for £118 delivered next day. Top service and pricing!!

Trouble is, this is the first step on the long and expensive road to building me a new road bike….

Road bike, Road bike! go on give in you know you what to? Its all thats keeping me going at the moment.

    This.
I managed 114 miles in crappy conditions yesterday, whereas there’d have been very little chance of me hossing myself to go slogging through mud on the mtb.

If you can find the Durano Plus in the ‘London Promotion’ limited edition, then get a pair. They’re wire bead for the first time (usually folders), are bulletproof, and way cheaper than usual due to the bead. I’m sure Charlie the Mong will do you a pair (700 x 23c) if you ring him cos he knows we’ve got them in stock at his favourite Huddersfield-based distributor.

Saw a programme on TV recently where the female presenter had a Deep Colonic Massage. She had to halt the massage part way through due to an urgent cable laying requirement, which, apparently, is quite common. She later confessed to her next bowel movement being like giving birth to a Jacobean table leg.

She measured her waist before and after, and the difference was something like 4-6 inches loss due to the massage clearing the pipework so effectively.

I’ve ridden a few cx events on my (26″ wheeled, mtb tyred) mtb:

In the dry – apart from the obvious disadvantage of 26″ v 700c dia wheels, I’ve been reasonably competitive against my own club members (on cx bikes) at the lower end of mid-pack.

In the wet/mud – mtb tyres are a huuuuuge disadvantage. Against the same club members I have to pull out all the stops to avoid being lapped over 1-1.5mile laps. Although better, I haven’t found that mtb specific 26 x 1.35 cx tyres make a significant difference in wet/mud either. However, on a 29er with ‘std’ cx tyres I’d expect to be back amongst my club mates again.

So, how did you do today?
Bearing in mind that this is a personal challenge and not a race, I got round in 2h 32m. When I glanced at the sheet of paper that the timers were filling in, my name appeared to be the 24th one they’d written down.
My mate Kev’s name was the first one they’d written down and he managed 2h 6m.
Midgley Moor was a nightmare today, but I did at least manage to ride the whole of the descent despite my earlier misgivings.

Thanks for all the replies folks, my mate has read the thread and followed the links, and is very grateful your contributions.

Following an appointment with the consultant today my mate has now requested to be put on the waiting list for the surgery. To be honest, I get the impression that he feels quite relieved now that the decision has been made and he’s just keen to get on with it. I’ve talked him into getting a road bike to start with and he’s set a goal of riding from Huddersfield to Bridlington as his target. I’ve said I’ll go with him to keep him company. Roll on the day we set off cos it’ll mean he’s back to his old self again :D
