Hmmmmmm, whereabouts is that then, Number 18?

We managed a tough 85 miles from Hudds to Selby and back this morning. Cruising at over 30 mph on several occasions on the way out – block headwind for 45 miles on the way back. Would have been an almost perfect February day for riding if the wind wasn’t blowing so strong.

If this @rsehole has the front to have a go at someone your size, Ton, what might he do to your average-sized cyclist who weighs three eighths of bugger-all?

We went a few years ago now. We were stood in one of the Disney water parks when the Shuttle (Discovery – 1998) containing John Glenn was launched. Even from that distance the take-off was truly awesome.

We’d been to the Space Centre earlier in the week and done the full tour. One of the best bits is that in the Saturn V hangar you’ll see little signposts that say ‘*someone’s name* will be here from X til X ready to speak with you’ (or somesuch). I was lucky enough to talk with Gene Krantz – the bloke played by Ed Harris in Apollo 13 – famous for his ‘Gentlemen, failure is not an option’ quote.

Bloke I used to work with had a BSO that weighed as much as Pluto and went by the name of Mountain Ridge Destroyer.
It only ever saw tarmac. Slowly.

People who belch loudly without covering their mouth with their hand. No, saying ‘excuse/pardon me’ doesn’t.

    People who say ‘axe/axed a question’. It’s ‘ask/asked’.

You could dredge all the rivers along with all the burns/streams you like but it would make very little difference to the amount of water able to be removed from saturated land, the rainfall we have had is unusual and unprecedented and if the rivers were dredged then we’d have to cope with water flowing at an increased rate which would bring it’s own problems. All according to friend who holds a high position in the BHS.

With respect, is a manager at British Home Stores really that qualified to comment? ;-)

I’m currently sat in 3rd place with 617 miles, with just tonight’s 35 mile training ride to come for this month’s total. Missed out badly on Sunday with the horrendous weather cancelling the club ride, losing me between 60 and 70 miles.

It’s still been a decent month for me though and I expect Feb to get off to a good start with decent mileage on both Sat and Sun. This should be built on the following weekend when I do the annual Batley Bash road run, which will be the year’s first ton (110-ish miles door to door).

I expect Zangolin’s ‘little and often’ approach to see him sail past the 1000 mile mark for Jan this week – top stuff fella, well done!

It annoys me when I return my shopping trolley back to the parking shed thing to find other troll lies randomly dumped there. If you can actually arse yourself to get the trolley back there (as opposed to the even lazier b’stards that leave the damned things in the parking bays) then please have the sense to stack them in neat rows like they’re designed for. I often feel compelled to sort them all out myself before I stack my own and then leave. Grrrrrrr!!!

I bought a case of 20 tins of lager for Christmas – there’s 19 still left! I by no means class myself as teetotal, but I’ve just gradually drifted away from drinking as I’ve given my riding more significance.

Tony – go through each ride as though you are going to edit it. You’ll probably find that one or two have the box for ‘include in stats’ (or some such) unticked. Make sure both boxes are ticked in every ride and it’ll soon update your info.

You can easily edit your Endo stats after each ride on the website, Tony. Go to the ‘Training’ tab and it’ll show your most recent ride(s). There’s an ‘Edit’ tab on the right side of the map – press that and adjust the bit that’s wrong. Press ‘save’ et voila!!

How’s everyone finding it then? Is being involved working as an incentive, or, conversely, a bit de-motivating when you see what some others are doing?
It’s a good incentive at the mo for me, for eg: I’d probably have done about a 25 mile leg-stretcher yesterday (prior to a near 80 mile club run today), but ended up adding a loop to get a 42 in. I was also out on a bloody foul Weds night last week, cranking out a 35 mile training ride that I’d not have bothered with pre-Christmas.
Haven’t touched the mtb since early Nov though, which I really ought to rectify soon.

I just put a longer stem on, added a pair of bar ends and got a pair of Schwalbe City Jets in 26″ x 1.50″ flavour. A pair of suspension-corrected rigid forks will also make a big difference.
I should also mention that, despite being a member of HSW for a few years, I’d never bothered with the tarmac side of things. I just turned up one week on my ‘converted’ mtb and was made very welcome. I had no bother at all keeping up either. At this time of year we’ll only be doing 25-30 miles anyway, as we’re back in Lockwood for 9.00ish.

Pedal4Pounds5? Pair of slicks on a hardtail will be absolutely fine. That’s how I started off road riding. If you want to get some practice in with an organised group then turn up around 6.50pm on Tuesday evenings outside the Safety Centre in Lockwood, and join in the Hudds Star Wheelers mid-week run. 3 groups of different abilities and no one ever gets left behind.

The challenge has been set up as ‘number of workouts’ not as a ‘cumulative mileage’ challenge. Surely the idea is to record the amount of miles and not how many times you ride?

    Schwalbe Blizzard 25c. End of….

It will be ‘End of….’ when they wear out (unless you have a stash somewhere) as the Blizzard is discontinued and has been replaced by the Lugano. It was/is an entry-level tyre anyway.
If you’re going Schwalbe then the Durano Plus is the way to go. I’m running 25c on the winter bike and 23c on the summer bike. They’re virtually bomb-proof and very durable, providing me with 1,000s of trouble-free miles.

Google for the route of the Calderdale MTB Marathon. It goes right through Peckett Well, out over Midgely Moor and beyond for around 26 miles. You’ll obviously finish up back home again as Pecketts is midway around the loop. I’m sure there’s plenty of other great riding round there, but it’ll be a good start and allow you to ‘get your bearings’ in a new area.

Once the switch to winter bikes has been made then riding without full guards and additional flappage shows selfish ignorance and a distinct lack of consideration and respect for fellow riders. Pulling your tripe out for 4 or 5 hours at a time is uncomfortable enough without being subjected to a constant stream of filthy road-water aswell.

I got a nice steady 25 miles in on the winter roadie earlier. Beautiful sunny day with just a tad too much in the way of headwind.

I regularly race my mtb with my tyres at 65psi (max. rated pressure) and would have no qualms about going higher if the rating allows. Before the last apocalyptic mud at Eastnor I ran my Larson TTs at 65psi for the previous 3 or 4 Mayhems and had plenty of grip. The challenge events around here are around 50/50 on/off road so I reckon I’ve more to gain by minimising rolling resistance than accounting for a few hundred yards of a 30 miler where more grip would be of benefit. I just back myself to keep the bike upright when it gets a bit sketchy.
I do put less in if I’m training/at a trail centre/pottering about though.
