    Basically, nuun works. That’s what.

I’d be booking a checkup with the GP, if only to rule out possible illnesses like the onset of diabetes or some such.

Is your saddle the right height?
I suffer really badly with cramps (was woken at 3.00am last night with my inner thigh cramping badly) both during and after rides. My daily hydration is pretty poor though and if I forget to drink adequately then I will cramp regardless. However, since I discovered nuun tablets, then I can stave off cramp within a very short time both riding and afterwards. They really are a miracle cure for me personally and there’s no way I could ride the distances and speeds that I do without them.

Binners – you could stick all the entry forms in the one envelope, sort out one cheque between you for all the fees and one SAE for the confirmation returns? We’ll have an online entry facility for next year, but our web-man is currently battling a long-term illness and the treatment is rather debilitating.

Darren – your confirmation is already in the return post, mate.

    PLEASE don’t forget your SAEs – like a certain un-named, Darwen-based singlespeeder managed to… :D

This year we’ve introduced an additional shorter route option, which cuts out some of the epic ascents, to encourage more entries. This option is 20 miles long, as opposed to the full 30 mile route. If you’re a relative beginner, coming back from illness/injury, worried that you won’t manage the full distance, your ‘other half’ is riding and you aren’t quite so quick, your son/daughter would like a go but the full route is too far, or for any other reason that you’d like to take part and 30 miles is too much, then please come along and give the shorter option a go. It’s a great day out if you’re travelling from further afield and a fantastic introduction to organised events with no pressure.

Well done fella. We rode it today as our Sunday club ride (Hudds Star Wheelers) too. I clocked 108 miles door-to-door in 6.53. It was a day of purgatory chasing the fast lads up hill and down dale. Luckily (for me) the club skipper blew badly at Oxenhope so I was on chaperone duties to get him back over Pecketts Well into Hebden. Like you said, what a fantastic spread at the end. A top day in the saddle, but my legs are shot to shit now. In hindsight, perhaps 3 hours on the MTB yesterday wasn’t the best preparation…

Yes Ricky. Print it off, fill it in, stick it in an envelope along with a cheque for £17 and a SAE envelope and bung it in the post. I’ll do the necessaries when I receive it, and you’ll get your entry number, some directions and a route map by return. Then all you need to do is turn up in time on the right day, with your bike and a lid, and have a fantastic time.

We never put a limit on entries, so if you want to ride then you’re riding! All we ask is that you pre-enter so we have a better idea on numbers to cater for. You’ll also definitely get a t-shirt in the size you require as we order them one-for-one as you enter.

Some help on the day would be a massive help Nick, and very much appreciated. If you can get over the night before we’ll be having the traditional pre-event curry too. Accommodation at chez Ludders if necessary, mate.

You’ll get all the answers to your questions if you ask on their FaceBook page, they’re pretty keen. Good luck for tomorrow to all that are participating. The weather up here is a bit damp, but much warmer than last year.

I can honestly say that it doesn’t bother me at all. If I’m out on my own then I’d rather that they sat in behind than come through for a turn because I want to ride at ‘my’ pace putting ‘my’ effort. I don’t want a rest or to take a tow. I’ve done dozens of rides with a mate who will sit on my wheel for the whole ride, whether that’s for 50, 60, 110 or whatever miles. I’m happy, he’s happy. If I catch up with someone then I carry on at my own pace and speak as I go past. If they grab my wheel that’s fine. If they come through for a turn I don’t change what I’m doing at all. To be honest though, it very rarely happens that I cross paths with anyone of similar pace.

Sit on the front and pull your tripe out for 15 mins, then drop back into 3rd wheel. You’ll soon feel the difference. The faster you go, the more noticeable it is, IME.

My rear Open Pro gave in mid-ride a fortnight ago. A good third of the rim was detached and flapping freely. It didn’t half go with an almighty bang. Mind you, I was doing 30mph on the Keighley to Skipton dual carriageway at the time. Luckily for everyone concerned I was on the back of the group at that point and I brought the bike safely to a halt without further mishap. I got both rims replaced as the front wouldn’t have lasted much longer either.

When much younger, and in my first supervisory role, I faced a similar dilemma with complaints against a rather unhygienic female member of staff. Her idea of cleanliness was a quick squirt of cheap perfume. She was rank!! After talking things through with our HR dept. I passed the responsibility on to a combination of the works Nurse and my Foreman. To be honest the issue never really got resolved, but we all breathed a (much fresher) collective sigh of relief when some dope got her pregnant and she left.

To be honest, I’m sorely tempted to send an ‘aggrieved’ text to

Rebecca Clark BSC Dip CFHP on 07590 683182 to register my disapproval of the way her mobile advertising vehicle is parked.

It’d be such a shame if her afternoon was a little disrupted by a constant stream of messages…

Kryton – perhaps when you’ve re-read what I actually posted and not what you want to believe, you might realise that it’s not BS as you suggest.
The first part was a joke between friends.
The remainder is based on experience (anecdotal though that may be) of events that I regularly take part in. As soon as I can afford I’ll be racing on a 29er HT – because I’m convinced they’ll be faster for the type of events that I ride.

I’m currently in 2nd place on 1326 miles, but I’ve missed a lot of miles this month through the poor weather and a mid-ride mechanical that necessitated ringing home for a lift back. Despite that, I have managed a couple of centuries this month, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

Hey Al – just remind me what you rode the last time you did the IoM E2E. The one where you knocked 30+mins off your time from the year before and went from about 110th to around 58th?

To be fair though, I reckon that the kind of event like the IoM E2E, which is a mixture of road, gravel track and bridleway is where a 29er really excels over a 26er. From a personal point of view, I could live with the comparatively small ‘losses’ on the more technical sections because I reckon that the gains on the fast, open pedally sections will be pretty significant. It’s a question of playing the percentages.
I suspect that the differences between 26er/29er will be much closer on a ‘proper’ technical XC race course that challenges handling ability and isn’t just purely a test of who can pedal the hardest.

If you’ve ever entered a CX race on your 26″ mtb then you’ll know just how much harder it is to be competitive against the 700c opposition.

There’s a choice of 2 club rides on the Sunday. Both leave the train station in Huddersfield at 9.00am – a shorter ride of upto 60 miles at a reasonably steady pace (at a guess around the 16mph ave over undulating terrain) and a longer run upto 80 miles at an ave of around 18+mph ave over similarly lumpy terrain. The ave mph will go up if we head East into flatter country. We often cruise in formation in the high 20s mph if it’s flat. Having experience of group riding (2up, close formation) is required for the faster group for safety reasons.
You’ll be made to feel welcome and folk will have a chat both en route and at the cafe stop. I can ride into town with you and can also ride home with you too, if you give it a go with the faster group, as I’m Golcar based. We’ll usually be home between 1.30 and 2.00pm.
I also usually go for a leg-stretcher on a Saturday to loosen up a bit. Anywhere between 25 and 40 miles at a steady pace just to get the legs moving.

Shame you’re not out on the Sunday morning, you’d be very welcome to join the Hudds Star Wheelers on our weekly club run.
Failing that, my suggestion would be: Slawit, Longroyd Bridge, Folly Hall, Lockwood, Brockholes, New Mill, Victoria, Flouch, Langsett, Strines, Ladybower, Snake Pass (no probs with traffic when climbing it in this direction), Glossop, Woodhead Pass, Holme Moss, Holmfirth then retrace the route back through Lockwood etc. It’s a bit lumpy, but some of the scenery is breathtaking.

When your out for a walk and you stop to identify tyre patters in the mud.

… and then offer a likely suggestion as to who it actually was doing the riding, because you know which tyres the locals favour…
