I’ll be the big ugly bugger they shouts at you at the start!
Been out since 12.00 marking the routes and only been in the house 20 mins, so I’ll be needing coffee and Red Bull til I come round a bit!2TheSanityAssassinFull MemberJust to clarify a few points:
You must register and collect your bike number at Leymoor Cricket Club first. It is on Parkwood Road, Golcar, Hudds. HD7 4QW, right next to the Walkers Arms pub.
You can then head for the start, which is on Holmfield Road, about half a mile away.
You will finish at the cricket field.
Parking is all on street and very congested. Aim to arrive as early as you can, around 8.00am if possible. Make use of the streets both above and below the cricket field.
We have just 2 toilets – you will have to queue. Please bear this in mind.
Refreshments before and after are free.
Bacon butties are £1.50each. You do have to pay for these if you want one.
You CAN ENTER ON THE DAY. It’s £25 CASH and you will NOT GET A T-SHIRT. No exceptions.
Thanks – we hope you have a great day.
1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberYou have to register at HD7 4QW first, then roll down to the start on Holmfield Road.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberWell, I saw the clock turn to 3.00am…
You CAN ENTER ON THE DAY if you like, it’s £25 CASH please.
PLEASE, please, please arrive around 8.00am if you want to park reasonably close to the cricket field. The postcode is HD7 4QW
Make use of the streets on the lower side of the field too: Thorpe Green Drive, Intske, Green Crescent etc, but please PARK RESPONSIBLY!!
Safe travels everyone and I hope you have a great day out. Thanks.
3TheSanityAssassinFull MemberI’ve been out stapling those ‘signature’ pink direction signs on telegraph poles and fence posts all evening. I got back to start processing all the late entries and am now still emailing out all the remaining entry confirmations before I try to sort out the Marshall’s spreadsheet. Then maybe bed.
We’ve had a late surge of online entries, putting the confirmed starters at 182 (late drop-outs notwithstanding), so thank you very much for rallying round, it’s very much appreciated.1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberA last reminder:
Pre-entry closes at midnight TONIGHT. If you want to ride AND get yourself a commemorative t-shirt, then you MUST ENTER BEFORE MIDNIGHT. Ideally you’ll not leave it so late though, because I’ve had a lot of late nights already and I’d quite like to be not be sat up at 2.00am emailing entry confirmations again!
If you’re still undecided, then please turn up on the morning (in good time – 8.00ish) with your £25 CASH and fill in the CORRECT ENTRY FORM. Remember, I have to read these things afterwards and I’d rather not have to try and decipher what looks like an explosion in a Welsh Scrabble factory!
If you want to ride, no one will be turned away.
Parking is all on street, so the earlier you arrive the more chance you’ll have of parking in the same post code as the HQ.
Thanks.1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberDon’t forget – bacon butties for only £1.50!
locally sourced bacon and fresh local bread too.
Also – a surprise guest appearance from the forum’s very own legendary TJ. Come and meet the great man himself!TheSanityAssassinFull MemberYup, same route.
Also, a reminder that pre-entry closes on Friday night. If you want a t-shirt then get your entry in sharpish.
If you want to enter on the day then it’ll be £25 cash and you won’t get a shirt.

Ah winner! Looking forward to it. I might be last back 😂And you very well might not! But that’s not really the point, it’s about taking part, having fun and challenging yourself. It’s a tough route, but you’ll love the views and the camaraderie amongst the riders.

I hope the route is marked out and we don’t have to follow the a4 page of directions that’s been mailed to us? 😀Don’t worry, fella, there’ll be more signs and Marshalls out there than you can wave a stick at!
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberJust under a fortnight to go, the trails are actually showing signs of drying out a bit and it’s payday!
Sunday 12th May – your last chance to ride this classic ‘challenge’ event. Come and see some of what this little corner of West Yorkshire has to offer and help raise a bit of money for local good causes.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberStill plenty of time to get those entries in folks.
Don’t forget, this is your last chance to take part in this long-standing event and see some of what this great area has to offer.
1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberPart of my job is picking and packing bike parts to distribute to the trade. Given that we use a couple of standard UK couriers, I make sure that I pack my own orders in the way that I would like to receive them, ie tightly, with no chance of stuff moving about. It’s also prudent to take stock of the order before packing it and try to keep incompatible stuff apart. I once had to stop a new recruit trying to stick an 18” whicker basket in with a dozen 7spd freewheels that were only packed in ziplock bags.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberSunday 12th May – Colne Valley MTB Challenge near Huddersfield.
20 & 30 mile routes, eBike, Gravel, CX & MTBs all welcome.
http://www.cvmbc.co.ukThere’s a separate thread specific to the event, but a plug on this one can’t do any harm too.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberIf you’re asking whether the Elvedes kit is any good or not, then yes it is, all their kit is top quality. I work for the UK importer, so you can call us with any questions if necessary.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberI work for a popular P&A Distributor in the cycle trade. Main boss is an ex-1st Cat, his business partner is an ex-2nd Cat, I’m a (lapsed) 3rd Cat and one of our wheel builders is a 4th Cat. Nobody in the company wants to see one of their colleagues injured or killed, and there’s never any banter related to ‘nuisance’ cyclists. I like my job and the people I work with.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberMassive thanks to those of you (above) that have already sent through their entries.
Also, many thanks for the kind words.
FunkyDunc – both really. Mainly because I’ve run out of enthusiasm and the dwindling entry numbers feel like a bit of a hammer blow to my commitment. Also, the Scout group are on the verge of folding, so there’ll be no more need for raising funds and no volunteers to help. There’s other factors too, with everything just pointing towards a dignified exit from the scene.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberWhen we started back in 2004 parking was much less of an issue. Since then, however, loads of houses have changed hands and households tend to have several vehicles these days. Basically we just have to make the best use of the surrounding side roads now. Fortunately, we’ve never really had any issues with disgruntled residents – except one. I’m 56 now, and for the entirety of my living memory, this bloke has been an absolute bellend. He was at it again yesterday after we’d set you off, but got the usual short shrift from one of the cricketers.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberMany thanks to those that joined us yesterday, glad to hear that you all (mostly) enjoyed it!
As for the field climb – I had to find some way of joining up the offroad stuff or it’d have been a nasty tarmac climb and no lovely trail for the photographer to capture you all on. Hopefully the rest of the route from there was more enjoyable?TheSanityAssassinFull MemberStill time to get your entries in before Friday’s pre-entry deadline.
Thanks to all that have already committed – we very much appreciate it.

Are there more than one Colne Valley mtb challenges then ?Posted 1 day ago
REPLY | REPORTNo – the other long-standing event is the Holme Valley version. Entries were desperately low for last year’s event, so I tried to drum up a bit of support on their behalf.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberA bacon butty for only £1.50? You’d be mad not to!
http://www.cvmbc.co.ukTheSanityAssassinFull MemberRoll up, roll up – get those entries in!
Plenty of space for everyone and e-Bike friendly too!!TheSanityAssassinFull MemberJust over 3 weeks to go, so keep those entries coming folks.
I’ve already booked glorious riding weather, and now the trails are drying up nicely too, so it’s gonna be another great event.TheSanityAssassinFull MemberT minus 4 weeks and counting.
Get those entries on their way and look forward to a cracking event!1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberThere’s no reason why you couldn’t park up in the pub car park overnight, others have done so before.
1TheSanityAssassinFull MemberGive us a call at The Cycle Division (01484 665055) where we can talk you through what you need/how to do your own repair, or we can give you the number of a shop that will service it for you. We’re very helpful, and only over in Huddersfield.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberThanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.
One thing that I forgot to mention in the original post, is that I currently have a small number of event sponsors. For an agreed fee, they get exposure on our website < http://www.cvmbc.co.uk >, our Facebook page, on the certificates, on any entry forms and posters – and, crucially, on all the t-shirts. I’ve always said that if I can cover my (relatively not insubstantial) costs with sponsorship, then it’s up to me to generate the fund-raising aspect by my own endeavours. ie, I don’t treat any sponsorship purely as a hand-out, I use it to help generate greater income through the quality/popularity of the event itself. Given that the greatest degree of sponsor exposure is on the t-shirts, I’m currently loath to drop them as I fear that would lose me the sponsor income.TheSanityAssassinFull MemberBirkin Fisheries Tea Rooms, just outside Selby. Always a welcome oasis mid-ride when you’re on a fast, flat one.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberJust had a text message from the organiser to say that they ended up with 145 entries, which they were delighted with considering the situation a fortnight ago. They’d like to thank everyone for their support, particularly those that signed up due to this thread appearing. Well done everyone.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberAnother ‘heads up’ – anyone that either did, or would like to have done, yesterday’s Holme Valley MTB Challenge really should consider this one too. The old route was a belter and it’s very well organised too.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberOnline entry is now closed – but pay on the day is available. Just rock up in good time and they’ll let you ride.
Good luck everyone.TheSanityAssassinFull MemberThe event is DEFINITELY ON this weekend. Entry numbers currently stand at only 90, so please support them where you possibly can. Thanks.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberHi All. I’ve just messaged the organiser for some clarification on whether the event will be going ahead or not this weekend. I’ll post up here and on my CVMBC FaceFaff page as soon as I get the definitive answer.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberPre-entry closes tomorrow dinner time, although they’re also offering entry on the day for a bit more dough. Help them out, and save a few Bob too, by getting your entry in sharpish. Cheers.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberAs of right now, they have just 61 confirmed entries. Many thanks to those that have signed up (above), but this event used to regularly attract 400+ riders. If anyone else out there is in two minds, please sign up and give them your support.
TheSanityAssassinFull MemberOnline entry closes tonight at midnight, so save a £5er and get your entry in sharpish!
On the day entry still available, but it’s £25 cash.
Don’t forget the bacon butties at only £1.50 apiece too.
See you there bright and early.
