    Local bearing shops don’t seem to be able to supply the tapered headset bearings.

    I got mine from the local Trek dealer; it wasn’t cheap, ~£18 for the lower race IIRC.

    I used the park tool and also had to swap out the casette when I fitted a new chain, from that I believe the tool isn’t a good way to estimate chain wear.

    Konster wins the ‘most comprehensive reply this week’ award

    Agree’d, good info there.

    Also agree about Fox as a company. I don’t feel their products are bad, in fact they’re very good but there do seem to be problems that are not resolved.

    Case being the whole bath oil migration problem on air forks when the lower leg oil gets into the air chamber making the fork more progressive. It’s gradual so you don’t notice it until suddently you realise you’ve not hit full travel for months! AFAIK the service centres are fitting updated parts as the forks come in, but what would be nice is if Fox doesn’t feel it can do a recal to at least put out some sort of service buletin on their website to let people know a) that the problem exists b) how to fix it!

    I must say I think it’s a great venue, i’ve yet to ride it in the wet/damp but i’m possibly going next weekend so I doubt it’ll be bone dry!

    The variety of stuff there is amazing considering how small an area the hill covers, plus its really steep considering how flat the surrounding area is- plus i’ve yet to ride anything other than DH3 and the red descent so there is more stuff to grow-into so to speak 🙂

    Not had any speed wobble- more just that for cornering I have to shift my weight a long way forward to counter the weight of the bag so the bike feels balanced- there’s no weight on the front wheel other wise.

    I was having axle slipping problems with my alfine 8- but I found murdering-on the 15mm bolts sorted it 😉

    Sounds like the charger you have is a basic single stage trickle charge. It puts a small amount of current in so it takes a long time to charge, simple and cheap to design and build.

    Better chargers (ultrafire etc) put in a higher amount of current to begin with, then as the battery nears fully charged they switch to trickle charge. This protects the battery so it isnt overcharged.

    A fast charger should recharge an 18660 in a few hours rather than overnight.

    Edit. Something like this; http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/batteries/ultrafire-wf139-charger.html

    I really like the convenience of the mtx rack and bag but I do find it does the handling no favours having the weight that high up and far back. Almost tempted to give some traditional panniers a try or possibly fit a frot rack to balance the load.

    No experience with front panniers; what’s out there and how easy are they to fit?

    Oh, and my Oury grips from the USA. Granted they’re a little marmite but I like them 🙂

    Since its a sunny day and I can’t go anywhere on it as I’m waiting in for a delivery of logs, here’s a snap of my roadrat.

    Flat bar alfine model, swapped to the black chain set as I thought the silver looked odd. I have a topeak mtx rack that I use for commuting as well as full guards.
    IMO the roadrat is great, not being a road cyclist but needing something to commute on and for general rides where the 160mm FS is a bit overkill it’s perfect.

    You’re lucky; at least he actually left it at your house. The ups delivery-monkey left my brand spanking new bike at a house a whole street away, while they were out!

    Thankfully they’re nice people and dropped it round (earning themselves a bottle of wine in the process) But I was not amused!!

    The Activia Pro 2 has 11sp Alfine, dynamo lights and…

    Just a shame it sounds like a yoghurt.

    I noticed this too; as to why? Dunno- confused!! Can they be lower maintenance than V brakes?

    Yes when it arrived I thought; single pivot nomad. Thankfully the medium strive is a little longer in the top tube than the nomad, tried a medium and it was too cramped for me.

    I’ve taken delivery of one of these;

    It’s an alternative to the YT, but with fox suspension.

    That’s a good point about the bearings; forgot that it would have cup and cone. Is there a guide any where on servicing the alfine bearings?

    Agree on the spec of the spicy, I understand that a direct sales bike is going to be cheaper than one supporting dealers etc but the spicy spec is IMO very low for the cash. Look at the 2012 916; it’s a £5000 bike yet the spec is equalled or exceeded by direct sales bikes costing under £2500. Sure it’s carbon, but that’s what? 1/2lb saving? Really wanted a 516 but just couldn’t justify the extra cash

    Sorry, what was the question?

    Non-ust or tubeless ready tyres can work tubeless, but ime its much harder to get the bead to seat.

    I’m guessing he meant wheels judging by the other thread 🙂

    Jwr;

    What tyres are you running in winter mode? I see you have a full front guard, do you also have a rear? I fancy some cx ~35mm tyres for my road rat but I do lots of commuting road miles so don’t want I ditch the full length mudguards; trouble is I’m unsure what fits!

    Seem great so far, tyres seat well, decent width, compatible with all the major standards, look great.

    How did you find the strive? What made you get rid?

    I found my front exposure light (Flash I think?) was very particular to different batteries. I have several that look identical sizes but one takes endless fiddling to get it to turn on.

    Super light though! Love the always on but strobing mode.

    I’ve also seen very little about the fox post.. is it even on sale?

    Thing with the fox is it looks very much like a me-too product. What does it offer over existing products on the market? Does it have internal routing? Nope- still uses the original hose on the moving part system. Does it have a nice neat lever that takes up less space on the bar or integrates with, for example a fox suspension lock out? Nope, it has 2 levers.. 2!!

    Put your shock pump on the valve at the base and pump up to 250psi. That should sort it. Leave it overnight and check its still ok. If it starts doing the same thing again then you’ve got a leak; get it back to the retailer or the SRAM tech centre for a replacement.

    Had this with mine, currently waiting on a new post to be sent out… Taps fingers impatiently…

    Wip the tyre off and stick a patch on for peace of mind?

    Out of interest what is your tubeless setup? (tyres/tubeless kit/rims)

    Pacestar -> trailstar -> vertstar

    Low wear and grip <-> high wear and grip

    I’ve not used the vert star but the trail star is noticably softer and faster wearing than the pacestar which itself isn’t exactly a tyre you’re going to do big miles on before killing it.

    No the SX’s have 19mm internal width, the st is definately narrower but I’m not sure by how much

    theroadwarrior

    It’s tricky IMO because there are a lot of large rocks and tight turns- combined with its general steepness and length it’s a real test. Well worth it for the rest of the trail though 🙂

    I’m pretty sure mojo can supply as I understand they swap out the foam ring when a fork comes in for service.

    Te float fluid in the air chamber is just for lube. I’d run with 5cc of suspension oil for now and then swap it out to float fluid when you get home. Doubt it will do any harm. Just don’t put too much fluid in there or you’ll find the air spring becomes more progressive to the point of harshness and you won’t be able to use full travel
