They’re probably going to make the 718 all electric

Pretty much guaranteed for launch next year – boxster version first then cayman. Watching that with interest…

Did they have a technical issue or just human error?

    Neoprene is waterproof. Completely.

Yep – some divers wear drysuits made from it, so it ain’t letting water in.

Forget overshoes for properly dry feet – winter boots plus a gaiter (and./or trousers) is what you want.

If he does get elected I expect he’ll spend a bunch of those tax dollars on reinforcing his secret service protection. This year we’ve had 3 known situations where an armed individual has been close to him and he knows that becoming POTUS is likely to flush a few more out

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) reported 23 fires in 611,000 EVs during 2022, or 0.004 per cent in a year, which makes it 20 times less likely to happen than ICE car fires, which burned 3,400 times in 4.4 million cars, or 0.08 per cent.

There aren’t many detailed studies into ev fires but the Swedish one mentioned above was apparently thorough and came to the conclusion that ICE vehicles are catching fire much more than EVs are, but that EV fires can be harder to manage.  Also, the EV fleet in that survey is likely to be newer and therefore probably better maintained than the ICE fleet so there’s still the question of what happens  to those stats when Bob’s Back Street garage has soldered in a new cell from AliExpress

I recall comet Hale Bopp in the late 90s was easily visible, very much the classic shape and bright in the sky but aiui it’s pretty unusual for a comet to be like that. For instance Halley was much heralded in the mid 80s but wasn’t much to look at.

Is it just me or does it seem to happen quite regularly now

The sun goes through a cycle of about 11 years and we’re around a maximum at the moment. That means it’s chucking out a lot more charged particles so there’s more chance of seeing an aurora.

You can’t even send a route from the app to the device without going via the web

There’s a button in the app (android) to send to your device, just press that then sync via Bluetooth and it’s done.

Just use the website from your phone – same functionality

    From that robots link

A video also described them as an “autonomous assistant, humanoid friend” which could be used for basically any task you can think of.

Musk should’ve just gone with “Your plastic pal who’s fun to be with”.

On the Connect desktop/web version (not the app), open the route, click 3 dots at the bottom right of the left hand summary panel, choose ‘Download GPX File’

If you’re interested in this sort of thing I’d suggest reading up on the last voyage of the Karluk (eg The Ice Master by Niven). The persistence and determination of Bartlett and co is remarkable though he took some criticism after the event.

might affect the US election as a lot of the electoral infrastructure will be trashed in affected states.

So not because one of the candidates is in the pocket of the oil companies and is a massive climate sceptic, so electing him will do nothing to help with the issue that’s behind the more frequent and bigger storms?

my first replica jersey in 1985 was all of £17 and I saved up for it!

FWIW with inflation that 17 quid in 85 would be around 65 quid now, so the stadium version isn’t that far off.

For DUB the method I’ve found is to use a socket on the DS bolt with about 1m length of alu tube as a long extension to the handle, then a length of rebar into the NDS axle (wrap it in a rag if you want) and a similar 1m ish length of appx 2×2 braced between the rebar and the NDS pedal. Set it up so both are pointing up, DS lever slightly forward NDS slightly back then just push the NDS lever and pull the DS and the bolt comes undone easily.

Opted out once I found out how

For anyone who wants to opt out, under the pointless word soup there’s a button that says “Give Feedback”, tap that and you get a list of options with “Leave the beta” as the last one. Choose that.

Ah, just noticed that’s already been posted above.

TBH the smart thing to do at least for a while is just stick the DT ratchets in your bag.

Fair point – weighs about the same as some emergency Haribo and can be swapped by hand, so no reason not to.

How does the price difference of DT vs unofficial ratchet compare to the potential faff of a (likely wet and cold) ride home with a slipping freehub?

If the end result is that people take more care around cyclists because they think they might be on camera then that’s a win. Sadly the same thinking doesn’t seem to apply to taking care around the far more prevalent cameras in other vehicles so I won’t get my hopes up.

Have the SMMT just shot themselves in the foot? They’ve asked HM Gov for more tax breaks to boost EV sales, partly for business buyers but also to get similar tax breaks for private buyers. So anyone who’s pondering a move to an EV (waves) is now going to defer that decision for a few weeks while this is resolved, and in the short term there will even fewer private buyers.

Bikes upright in the ID.7 boot…

Ta. FWIW I’ve bodged some stands for the rear axle using 4×2 and ply so I can stand bikes up with both wheels off which means they fit in the back of the standard issue Octavia estate with the forks in the dropped floor. That makes it easier for bigger trips away with luggage and bikes, but for day trips they still go on their side with front wheel off.

I reckon it’s about as accidental as when a government minister walks around with their briefing notes on display to the waiting photographers.

Yes I had a frame with internal brake routing so had to feed the hose through then reconnect to the caliper. Didn’t replace the gubbins and all worked ok for years.

Evri and Yodel – can’t remember which one my last delivery was, but they gave me the option of where I wanted it left so I ticked the box and added clear notes for the driver. Got home and the parcel was just sat at the front door, no attempt made to even slightly place it out of sight of passers by. I left feedback but expect nothing will happen.

The other one of those two has the ability to put the package on the doorstep, ring the bell and then just disappear so even if you zoom to the door immediately there’s no sign of who delivered it, or their vehicle.

This is what you need in case the preload cap comes off

That will do the square root of naff all to hold your crank on if the pinch bolts aren’t done up properly. Aiui the main function of that plate is to show that you’ve got the crank far enough onto the axle.

Had a problem where the crank on MrsPs bike fell off on holiday – I went back along the trail and found the (alloy) preload cap about 20m back, but I was still concerned about another failure so put cable ties round each crank arm and looped another one between them through the axle. That way if anything fell off we should at least have had all the bits.It stayed like that for about another 10 months.

What’s the ID.7 like for bike carrying?

Beat me to it! What about upright with front wheel off, (maybe back wheel too as I have axle stands that I use in my Octavia).

DT freehub has dropped off the axle – they can do that. Make sure there’s no grit in the exposed faces then put a spring over the axle, then a ratchet with its teeth facing out, a ratchet with teeth facing in (so the ridged bits are together), then the other spring. Then push the cassette back onto the axle until it seats.

If you have a cassette tool to get it off the freehub that makes reassembly a bit simpler, but it’s doable either way.

Am I alone in that I don’t want to see lots of overtaking?.

Amen! In all the time I’ve been watching F1 there has never been a lot of overtaking. Even Murray used to say “catching is one thing, passing is another” so what we need is cars that can run close together for sustained periods but which need a well executed move to actually pass.

Controversially I also think there should be some element of conservation in the driving. There’s should be a trade off between tyre grip and longevity, and between lap time and fuel load – but the current tyres are a bit too delicate so we end up with comparatively slow race pace. For instance Danny Rics fastest lap in Singapore was a 1:34.4, the slowest lap in P1 when the track was green, the conditions weren’t representative and cars weren’t fully set up was 1:33.8. So everyone in the race was slower than the slowest car was at the start of the weekend.

I’ve yet to discover why the dishwasher would need an app.

If you’re on a tarrif like Octopus Agile then it’s useful to be able to turn stuff on when electricity is cheaper, so having appliances online (and with a public API) enables you to do that using home automation. Once a manufacturer has added the online capability it’s a small step to make an app, so I’d say the app is a side effect of it being online rather than a necessity.

But then you get some manufacturers who don’t support any third party access so you can’t do the automation side of it which means you’d have to check the next day’s electricity prices yourself then use their crappy app to attempt to schedule your appliance to start, which it then fails to do and makes you disproportionately cross.

Not sure why any of them need AI though!

Always seemed like a decent bloke, and when he had the feeling for the car he was great & his late braking ability was superb, but sadly he’s never really found that feeling in recent years. Hope he finds happiness and whatever success means to him in the future.

Noticed that there was no mention of a 2025 seat for Lawson, expect he’s been given some clear targets for the next couple of races to secure that.
