thanks for the tips – I made it to tilgate, nice and slippy on those downhills and spent most of my time on some nice singletrack out the back by the fields over the wooden bridge and up the hill!

someone there told me there were other trails on the other side so be keen to explore next time (hopefully when its a bit drier!)

    cheers again

Ewan I had to google to see what you did, flashheart – that was easier after I googled for Ewan’s

is there somewhere specific worth going or is there somewhere within a short drive of Newbury that would be worth a short trip for a more decent ride?

So if I wanna get a BMX to ‘sharpen’ my skills (where sharpen reads ‘0.5″ bunny hop’ is a 20″ going to help more or be more of a hinderence than a 24″?

Hi All – I have been through this now!

So just incase anyone searches for this/is interested in it

With my avid breaks, I used the taper locks and a QR (despite on-one saying to use tugs). However, as documented the brake caliper will be high enough to clear the top of the disc but it will be to far inward so the disc rubs on the frame.

Therefore I spaced the caliper on the inside using the little threaded o-ring (or whatever you call it) that you get on your presta valve.

    Works a treat now!

hmm ok maybe its just a spacing issue then – i thought i should try and keep the overall bb length to 73mm but reading some other forums other people seem to space out the drive with another spacer ie. 3 spacers in total + the chain guide.

though any other thoughts let me know – will have another go tommorow night

nuke – if i could afford to i would. one day i will change but until i magic some money up i need to find a workable solution.

    ok so basically it goes

cheers it is pretty obvious you are right;)

cheers olly – i didn’t realise they were meant to be used regardless, thought it was when you didnt have a tug – i do have a pair, came with the frame.

i will go forth and fit them – lugs forward (?) and all and my surly tug as I dont like my on-one tug, kept coming loose (granted threadlock would have been cheaper!)

andyl – is this a complete kit or does this just deal with the exposed part and I would need to get normal housing for the rest?

if i am doing this on my inbred 2nd gen which has cable guide along the down tube and the bottom of the stay – should i route it that way or not – i.e. is there a preferable way to route a continuous cable?

cheers for the replies – i was only really after whether the 5/7 pistons would fit the 3s:)

i agree buying a new brake would be what £50? but I dont have that so a £10 investment in some pistons will have to do, although agree it is major faff!

will let you know how i get on and buy shimano next time!

ok great thanks, i have actually just aquired some of the red rubber grease so will use that. just a couple more questions!

-i take it when i remove the hose there is no shut off so all the liquid will come out?

-the caps that go on the levers, that can be unscrewed – both of mine corroded all round the screw – obviously fluid leaked out. the shop sent me new ones to install – i put one on today before i tried bleeding them – when i came back later some fluid had welled up – is this normal, like a fail point on the brakes?

also i guess i may as well get some new pistons as i imagine the old one is shot?

    cheers

    Andy

ok cool – i will be very careful of that!

Hi – thanks for the reply I think the mount/disc size is right as it came as a kit from merlin. The mount feels a bit tricky as shown but I imagine nothing that unusual. The advice sounds sound though so I will try it out.

Just to clarrify – to do the pistons should I take the wheel out and pads then pull the brake or is this bad (I was told previously not to do this as would have to have a shop reset the pistons)

    Cheers

    Andy
