I’m going. Won’t be getting there until Friday afternoon though, as the stupid Jubilee has meant holidays in that week being fully booked at work. My mates are taking my tent down on Wednesday though, so I won’t struggle for space at the back of beyond.

As long as I get to see Lawnmower Deth on the Friday, I’ll be a happy bunny (with an inescapable trap of doom).

Saturday, Tenacious D followed by Skindred.

Sunday, hoping there isn’t too much of a clash between Soundgarden and Periphery.

Swapped from aluminium to steel last year and loving it. The 1.1lb(ish) weight penalty works out as less than 0.5% of bike & rider weight. I’ll take that for a better (to me) ride.

From an objective point of view, steel is more durable and more easily repaired than aluminium.

When I buy a car that I drive offroad, that has a gearbox open to the elements. Then I’ll maintain it as much as my bike.

That’s because muscle is heavier than fat, by volume (ie. more dense).

Tyres, OEM tyres tend to be bob. Looks like s decent spec to me, use it until it’s nacked, then replace with lighter.

My highlight was cleaning every climb on my local loop, in spite of the all still being covered in compacted snow/ice. Almost made me feel like I’m almost a half decent rider (technique wise, not a chance fitness wise, as I’m a right biffer).

25 miles on the road bike, feet feel like blocks of ice but it was nice out, I love sunny winter days.

Listening to Clutch, and I went to see Mastodon last night which was pure destruction

And weren’t they just on fire? I really didn’t like Creature Lives until last night, genius 8).

yes they are a nice bikes. I am not a hater; I just think that they are over priced. Especially seeing the quality control procedures. Still I gues an item is worth what people will pay for them so I can’t really say that they are over priced. I just don’t think they are worth the price.

That’s not quality control, it’s quality assurance. Quality control would be checking the frame at the end of manufacture, then binning the mis-aligned units. They’re correcting a process variation prior to a stage of the process at which point, alignment is critical (as they wouldn’t be able to correct it after heat treating). The upshot being, that they assuring that the final product is fit for purpose. I’m not too clued up on how it looks from an engineering point of view, but there’s nothing wrong with the quality proceedures.

You may be better off trying a more niche broadcaster first, maybe an online one, something like Lovevelo, go for a feature in a current show rather than a full show.
If that works try a full show. If that works see if they will help take it to a bigger broadcaster, maybe a sattelite channel of some sort. If that works try the BBC.
Start small and build up. It;s very rare for a first-timer (are you a first timer?) to get the channel they want and even the time slot they want. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor did with Red Dwarf, I beleive they even turned down an offer from Channel 4 as they didn’t want adverts in the middle ruining the flow. You need to be confident in it to turn down an offer like that though!

They had already done a fair bit of radio for the beeb and some writing for Spitting Image though.

The experiment uses Titanium and Aluminium tubes of the same diameter and thickness. A Ti seat post will have significantly thinner walls than an Aluminium. A Ti seat post will be designed to allow for some flex. To a certain extent flex in Aluminium has to be engineered out, due to material fatigue from repeat stresses.

I’m sure a carbon frame will last until the Aluminium Alloy Foam and Graphene ones start coming out.

    None myself.

But one of my mates once took a loan out for £1500 to build a new bike up. Bought a Cove Stifee, had some wheels built up Hope hubs on Mavic rims. Then bought some Sids which were going cheap (yeah, I know, Sids on a Stifee WTF??????). Then ran out of money for other bits and ended up swapping the lot for a Japanese import PSP (which had just come out, but still).

10 miles in just under 2 1/2 hours :D. Riding virgin powder was good as was where other riders had been. But riding where folk had been walking was a ball ache.

Doesn’t the salt dissolve in the water, though?

That’s kinda’ the point though. Even if it is dissolved, you’re washing you bike with salt water.

is it more harmful that mud?

That would be very hard to quantify, probably not. But it’s certainly more harmful than using unsalted kitchen/motor degreaser (so still no need to pay through the nose).

I use Elbow Grease, household degreaser spray. IIRC, pretty much any degreaser is better than Fairy (other brands of washing up liquid are available), due to washing up liquid containig salt (as an abrasive).

Back in the day, front/rear specific tyres were all the range and the aim is well illustrated by these

    Panaracer Smoke and Dart.

Smoke is the rear tyre with the steam boat paddle style tread for getting MAX POWER down.
Dart is the front tyre, with the arrow shaped tread, with lots of lateral edge for the steeringness.

iirc Bontrager Jones’ were the first to use the idea of having a smaller carcass on the rear tyre.

I often wonder why so many people clipped in. I think its a peer pressure because you are “supposed to be clipped in”. I use them for racing both on and off road but for general riding the gains are so marginal I’d much rather ride flats and not have the disadvantages. Suppose if you are used to it then great but its a bit like smoking in that respect no one likes it when they first start.

Well, I’m the only one out of my mates who uses SPDs.

Could just be that some people’s opinion differs to yours, I guess.

I’d seriously think against steel, it has no benefits over alloy or carbon.

Apart from being repairable with fairly common welding equipment, that can be found in most towns.

They can let you get away with things flats won’t, basically.

Horses for courses. You might also argue that SPDs force you to commit. When bailing isn’t an option, as Yoda says “Do, or do not, there is no try.”

Its to do with the whole image of the sport really. Cycling has a bit of a “cool” “hardcore” “underground” “edgy” image, especially mountain biking.

People spending extortionate amounts on very expensive bikes and then riding like a bellend just ruins it.

I mean fair enough, you dont have to be a great rider, but at least give stuff a go. If you cant ride a 3 foot drop off, I dont think you can call yourself a mountain biker.

Back in the day, if you said to someone you were a mountain biker, they would think of you as a bit of a tough guy (but cool with it aswell)

Not anymore, they almost laugh at you nowadays.

I don’t think you could be much further off the mark with this.

Firstly, if you want to call yourself a mountain biker. Then by all means do, it holds no kudos or credibility.

The reason for this is not people who aren’t gnarcore riding bling bikes. It’s that back in the day, mountain bikes were universally expensive. If you had one, it meant you had money, which made you cool. Now you can buy something that looks like a mountain bike for, what £70. People who don’t ride don’t know what they’re looking at, past suspension and disc brakes. Mountain biking no longer has kudos, because the image is no longer the preserve of those with money.

And it’s a better sport for losing the try-hard “Rad.” image.
