Mmmmm i think there better for the riding i like to do on the bikes i like to ride

Biggest thing i have seen is you can get a relatively cheap 26″wheelset and the feel doesn’t change that much to a more expensive set

A cheap 29er wheelset will be heavy and slow where as a decent set of 29″ wheels will be expensive but make a massive difference

I know Jeff was using a 26″ front with a large tyre with a 29″ rear god knows why on that one

I read a quote from Danny Hart put simply he said

There was a river running down the course so I followed it

Good old gravity and water all you need is massive balls

    :-)

Generally at a SS event a beer or two and a BBQ at the finish line would be the minimum requirement !

As already stated the fact that the organisers had no idea about bike piles etc would indicate that organising this kind of thing is beat left to those (whining cockbags) who do understand how to do it

Anyways it’s all done now and I had a good time :-))

No wonder the locals were so friendly there off to Barbados on our €€€€€

We had a few beer stops on the way round
Had my first Kebab in over ten years
Partied till 4.30 ish Saturday/Sunday morning
Rode the superb Brown and White trail about 65k door to door Sunday
Realised even more how ace my mates are old and new
    Didn’t explode any 29er wheels
Shame the camping was so bad for all my friends who endured it

I think next time we should just find a beer festival near some trails and spend the money on beer !

Sorry I’m late got stuck under half a dozen exploding wheels in my garage !

    Stu your the best FACT

Si you would have shamed about 99% of the readers on here today with your non wheel exploding antics on your “silly” bike

Tricky you can always borrow one of my Singulars anytime (swift or gryphon) as long as you take the correct safety advice and beware of exploding wheels especially if I’ve built them ;-)

And it’s a fact the Q’s are so tough on man and machine I have been known to ride a tandem around them :-)

What a joke were not bothering after going to le tour and liege bastogne liege etc where the local councils and police positively encourage spectating and campervans

At liege we pretty much parked on the hard shoulder of the motorway slip road which had been coned off by the police to aid the safety of spectators
We hopped over the armco barrier and were on la Redoute with the Phillipe Gilbert fan club in about 2 minutes

The olympic road race will always be a for tv type event not for spectating

Get down to Liege and the Ardenne for the grand depart of Le Tour in 2012 you’ll probably get there quicker than trying to navigate around box hill anyway

Try here the Alsace is fairly lumpy iwas down there last month didnt get to ride the bike tho
    http://www.tourisme67.com/moteur/chercher.htm?query=vtt
You can look for tourisme68 too

Take a drive down through belgium and the ardenne there loads of routes around houfallize starting from the town centre
Then carry on through Luxembourg cheap fuel diesel is 1.05 euro per litre
Then its straight into the Alsace and no Peage

Easy explanation is leverage applied to the disc verses the wheel size

Put massive 19″ wheels on your chav corsa the brakes feel rubbish because the big wheel has more leverage against the disc go back to a smaller wheel 15″ and the leverage on the disc is less so the brakes feel more powerful

Swap this around to fitting a bigger disc for the same size wheel the leverage is the same at the wheel but the bigger disc doesn’t work as hard for the same braking effort at the caliper

Effectivly giving you more available power only to the point of how much grip you have before you lock up

Also bigger discs get rid of the heat better giving better braking as everthing heats up the disc can keep cooler as thereis more material to disapaite the heat

Didn’t read all four pages so I may have missed the point

It does seem to be getting a bit tired at the mo and a bit Mbr, although just like summers from years ago I’m sure it used to be better back along.
Maybe after ‘many’ years I just don’t need to be told what the latest fandango piece of kit is I can just do what I want to do.
I certainly know for a fact I couldn’t make it any better !

Good to see some others trying to mod there hydros been running mine for about three years.
My biggest worry was the inlet port in the resevoir drawing in air as the fluid level dropped due to pad wear etc
This only happened once when the fluid boiled up but I think most brakes would have gone to the bar .
I spent many hours of messing around to get a good set up the only thing to remember is do the testing before hitting the big hills I used mine in the alps :-)

    not the best pic

@ MTG Hi from the Tandem hust after the food stop (Waving) :-)

Being a reliability trial it has been diluted with way markers the old written route to follow was more fun

Did a nice little add on to the 50k route to clock up a nice little 65k loop on our tandem too :D

Really enjoyed it and isnt the format based on Paris/Roubaix ‘ROAD’ Race ? Hence the title HONC

Maybe next year the event will only be open to 700c wheeled bikes one gear and drop bars ;-)
