Bump – help please! Spoke length?

As an aside, would copper anti-sieze work for the nipples?

Just a guess – are you sure you’ee items are in the sale, and not just discounted? Caught me out!

Yep, plus have a lil holder to stop spoke twist! Likewise with the funnel shape.

Any thoughts on the spoke lengths? Desperate to get on and order them, I keep putting it off!

Yep, the Sapim ones are longer but the thread dosnt extended with the length, unlike the dt nipples!
Interesting, do we have a second opinion?

Those were my thoughts from researching it, thank you!

    Many thanks!
I’ve been living in sheffield for the last sixth months, so been riding the peaks lots! 😛 & I’m off to edale youth hostel as a volunteer for a while this summer.
Afan or Galloway sounds like the best bet, thanks all for the help 😀

Be warned: you cannot do tlc then BC level three. It has to all be on the same course. My advise? (okay, bettervread as ‘what I am doing’) call and chat to a mbla course provider and book all the relevant training/assessments in one go for peace of mind 😀

I am currently in the process of doing this! Right: The BC award will be taking over as ‘the award’ however, it focuses specificallt on leadership, with no coachibg (theres a seperate award for that) furthermore it isnrmt yet up and running, the level three assesment (the one,you need for abroad) isnt offeredd yet.

In comparison the MBLA is up and running, teaches both leadership and elements off coaching, and IMPORTANTLY is officially recognized and will ve supported by BC as an equuvalent award (tlc=2 mbl=3) even after its amalgamation and you’ll be insured under the BC insurance membershio.

yes. white = dual position black = single
Interesting messiah, very interesting (sadly) I’m running 650B so the 55’s are out the option 🙁 the way you say it, it almost sounds like the extra composure of the devilles is a negative thing? Can they be ridden for relaxed fun as well as agressive?

Any direct comparisons with the devilles would be ace too! 😀 (no hyjack, its still a pike review 😆 )

    Holy thread ressurection batman!

On a serious note: what did /have people bought and tried? I’m currently in the market for some forks, also considering the suntour Durolous (they’re uoping their game!) and the ever (in)famous bos devilles.

Also, anyone know the biggest tyre you can fit on the pikes?

Ahh, thanks donk! Indeed it will be mainly for commuting, my fear would be that as I am currently stuck for 6 months the cx would be too uncomfortableand the stanton to dh orientated to have any fun at all on xc days out. Mind you, having ridden for years a rigid 26 ss mtb with 2.0 I cant imagine it will be unberable on the cx, just different?
Thanks for the tip on the gear ing also! Did you straight up switch? I fear I wont get on with ss on a laden commute, is it worth hedging bets by converting a geared cross bike? (although you then add a full rear freewheel, dished wheel, and tensioner into the fray) or is it a case of finding a comfortable gear? Commuting on the mtb (2:1 ratio) was dead easy if a bit slow!

Thanks Shedbrewed! I did look into the whippet more but I’m not sold on the press fit BB, I can imagine it would cause problems. BSA threaded for me please

Hehe, XC – very different! 😛 tiny 26″ wheels that.

Ahh, okay thanks for the pointer – I’m so used to looking (lusting) at ti stuff or roadbikes that it shook me! That’s good to hear r.e. the hlyexs, I haven’t been able to find much in the way of a review

    A fixed cx? Ohhh.. i like 😀

That Gryphon looks like a wonderful creation although -heavy? Why 29er over say a cross bike considering it is mainly for road miles? (more versatile perhaps)
Otherwise thank you very much – that post is experience filled! I will be going for an unusual hand set up anyway.. either drops with trp’s hlyex (hydraulic hoods!!) or mtb bars with bar ends and a tt bar extension in the middle

Ahh, I did have my eye on that!! Although at 6’1.25″ i think i might be a bit small for the frame?

Either way – whats the deciding factor? Still cant figure it out :S

props for bluegrass full faces – my first, comfortable from the oft, airy enough for riding and coming from a roadie/xc background it didnt feel heavy or restrictive wearing it (which was my initial impressions from wearing friends ff’s)

I personally have.preffered 26″ rigid (ridden snowdon, antur, cyb, wolftrax, peaks). 29″ is certainly a tad more comfortable, but i’ve enjoyed the 26er more and been able to tackle the techy stuff with more ablomb! Also ridden ss. Imo etc.

R.e. Bike choice, it does make a helluva difference! If your riding the same stuff on both setups go for an inbred ish, however if your doing much harder things on the bouncy setup it’s worth the two bikes (this is what i’m currently running if i’m honest!) If you can afford some forks for the xc rigid for the days you fancy as well then it makes even more sense!

Thanks messiah! That was a proper breakdown of user experience-great help! Sadly I cant afford going f oute a travel adjust/then a nice fork – so I think i’ll risk the 160, it’s what it is designed at, what the builder is running his version at and should make it a DH destroyer 😆 now, pikes or devilles 👿

Interesting, the bike in question is by someone whom i trust with the geometry. The current bikes he produces are likewise awesome at the 160mm (hardtails-incredibly similiar to the slackline) – but this is meant as a slacker enduro/gravity/dh hardtail with headangle of 63 at 160 and 65 at 120. my main concern here is pedability. hell i dont expect it to be a xc machine but i want to be able to ride up the mountain before shredding down. The frame is designed to have the same riding position as the previous one, despite the head angle change (other angles changed to accomodate) Now, theres no point getting the travel adjust if in the other positions it’s too much compromise to be of any use. Likewise theres no point getting fixed travel forks if for all but the gnarliest extreme they feel rubbish?

Pahaha, i hope not! Dh and DJ will lead the revolution!

I’m curious Hob Nob – what makes the differentiation between the pike and deville for you then?

R.e. the hub, fair point 😀 i’m building up my bike here so have the choice thankfully (plus i only have one bike that i’m selling, so cross compatibility isnt an issue).
Reading elsewhere – the bos seems to win quality/compression wise. Fixing can be done via bodges, but if anything goes majorly wrong there may be issues..
Pike – better back up, can get travel adjust (dunno if this will be important for me, but keeps my options open). can get new for second hand price of Devilles.

i’d be more concerned about destroying the tabs and so ruining running a chain guide

Thats very interesting waldo1 ! I’ve heard that the pike actually ramps up more making it better for hard hitting? (not disagreeing, just curious 😛 ) these forks will be used from the Megavalanche/Morzine/DH races/ Enduro to Peaks ragging – i’d edge on the ‘harder hitting side of things’.

R.e. ‘help’ my understanding was fox 34 seals fit dandy and the HUGE service intervals means nothing should go wrong unless you get a dud (less likely as they once were & it could happen in either case)

Any other experiences/thoughts on the above? thanks for all the help people!!

n.b. the other consideration is the Bos costs more, so i’d sacrifice other parts of the build.. but nothing major, i already have the frame/wheels so the rest is.. secondary? 😛

Very good point maxtorque! I was thinkibg along similiar lines.. The battle is also between a rockshox pike or a bos deville. Perhaps I am expectibg too much of this build – there is no harm in havibg two bike mayve xD

Thanks for all the helpful experience 😀
the frame geometry is designed to be ridden 120-160mm (but actually at 160mm!) however is uber slack, running at 63 for a 160mm fork to 65 for a 120mm fork.. at which point i’m reckoning that getting the travel adjust is the best way to ‘hedge my bets’ (As this is going to be one of the first couple produced – so no test ride 😛 ) and at worse i can switch out the cartridge?

NOW – 150-120 or… 160-130.. is it that much difference? Will the 160 make it that bit more capable/comfortable after a long descent but wil the 130 be just too slack to function as a rag around the Peaks machine? (either way i’ll probably just get used to riding it xD – but advice is much appreciated please!!)

ah that’s really interesting to hear – it corresponds with what i’d gathered looking at all the user reviews etc. Is the ‘pip’ that noticeable? The bike’s going to be used (hopefully) from dh and enduro races – peaks/wales/scotland ragging, hopefully megavalanche etc. So any noticeable performance may be worth the small inconvenience? :s Then again, pikes have travel adjust! (hardtail)

Did anyone buy one and hated it to begin, before loving it? I’ve liked my bikes, I suppose I clearly havnt had enough of them!

northwind and souldrunner, interesting to hear the conflicting view points!! i feel like i’ll just get used to the bike, in the same way i have to my current one, once your used to it, you just approach things differently! Surely the dual position faff on the new pikes works the same way?

I have recently got pop lock forks and found myself using the lockout all the time for climbing – but that may also be to do with the fact i have just changed from ss, so am still mainly out the saddle – and with the development of a smoothy climbing technique this may change

enft – interesting, i’m with you on the not fettling! (At least the internals) i’m not sure why the material matters in this case, but it’s ti! 😀

yunki – we shall see, i havnt had that experience from trying friends, so each to their own! plus, the pikes/devilles are meant to sit firmly high in their travel +for enduro/dh races i dont see this as a problem!

    kudos – could you elaborate?

and messiah – interesting i was wondering the same! Ofc the option could be to get travel adjust and run at preferred height, i just dont like the idea of the more complicated internals!

i do have a beard and i occasionally ride in sandals 😉 dont judge!

my concern is practical not aesthetics – in the end i settled on chiefgrooveguru’s final words, the pads dont slip when they’re next to my skin, so the others are going back.

that sounds very odd, in comparison to my 300L Moon (which i’ve always found very bright compared to other 300l lights) it was massively better! I’d drop an email and have an ask, it dosnt sound right at all!

    thegnarlycenturion

Huge difference! Picking the two up side by side and you’ll notice. Agreed the Totems are dh dual crowns in disguise – but hell if that’s what your doing then save the money and spend it on going somewhere to ride!

Also – as an aside- nobby nics seem an odd choice for such a beefy build? If you’ve just over built it for durability/peace of mind (i have!) then ditch the forks – you’ll get a nicer ride up – and something like th 36’s or even the new pikes can handle a proper thrashing by the pro’s on the way down 😀

Ahh, but commutings different! You dont want to destroy your other bike. Plus it’s a mental thing- use your current road bike for commuting and suddenly everytime you go out for a ride on it your reminded of the long winter months where you’ve gpt your third puncture half-way late to work.

Also- why isnt anyone recommending a rigid 29er? Light, comfortable and far more capable! Stick some slick 1.5 and feel the speed!
