Thanks for your help Cinnamon girl…

As long as I go ride it’s a winner.

    Thanks both of you..

CG, that’s enough information for me to make a route up, thanks, I remember making a big deal about us riding into Scotland, and the place Cocklawfoot rings a bell. Do you remember these?

Thanks baj, what you describe sounds good, I’ll plot that on a map and see what it looks like…

Cheers Tony, that’s a definitive answer, I guess I could manage with that.

I’d still like confirmation that the new swap out ones are the same, if anyone knows for sure.

    Thanks

    Been there too Spin.

They have a small headtube for the frame size I’d use, which would mean loads of spacers to get the stack height. Which is a strange set up for a bike built to do it all with comfort.

Out of all the steel frames I’ve looked at the Croix and the Kaff fit. I had a Croix on order since April and have been let down yesterday I think a trip to Rotherham is in order when they get the disc forks back in.

I have looked at the Cotic X, it’s the lack of rack mount braze on’s that put me off this one.

Propper braze on’s for the rack are a must, the seatclamp bracket thing you can use, I don’t like.

    Edric,
I have always ridden 23mm and 25mm tyres on the road, (I’m now trying to leave the racer in me behind and just enjoy riding) The 32mm will be fine for the road but would like to have some 37mm knobbleys for off road rides, as I wont have a mountain bike for a while.

Would like a steel do it all bike to fill the gap.

I have owned and raced cross in the past, I wont be racing , it will be used mostly for winter roads, touring and off road the least but I still want it capable off road and I know it will be fine with 32’s.

The Croix de Fer seamed to fit the bill but I’m told there no longer available in 2012. And the Kaff looks good and will build a better spec bike for the money.

    Thanks lads that’s helped.

I want it for pretty similar to Grum, light touring 1 pannier and a bar bag, if I can get away with it and local bike rides which take in fire roads which will inevitably lead into the odd singletrack section.

I have read the new swap out frames have a bit more clearance, it would be good to hear from someone with experience of these.

Thanks for your time especially Coopersport for the measure up.

    Not every week.

I’m a mountain bike coach, I do a ride out like this one now and again for fun and to help get a good name.

I did a ride out on Saturday to coinside with the World Cup and this is a follow on from that.

You’d be welcome to come along.

Maybe next time MrP, I do a few ride outs over the year, if your in the area again.

Pickering is always hospitable, it’s one of the few places where strangers still say hello.

Might say hello to you over the weekend.

    Cheers Gil,

There must be loads of you comming over to the Pickering area for the World Cup, I know most don’t need a guide, but it’s also nice to just ride some of the best trails in the area without thinking. (at no cost)

For those that don’t know, there is a town centre race on the Friday evening.

Saturday has the junior races, (hence my ride out)

Sunday is the main event with the women in the morning and the senior men in the afternoon.

    It’s a Mountain Biking Extravaganza.

Mine must be older hubs, just checked they are different.

They should go together well, the rear I built which was all equal was not far off true and round straight away.

So yours should go together fine.

I was told a couple of mm either way doesn’t matter for spoke length.

    Have fun.

I did exactly the same build, used 298 spokes but due to the flanges being different diamiters, on the front I think.
The wheel was quite a way out of dish. (it did come back but took a bit of messing about)
So if I did it again I would work out spoke length for the smaller flange.
You should have all 298 spokes apart fron 16 which should be a different length due to different flange sizes.

    Hope that’s come accross ok.

Kona have stopped making the King Kahuna for 2011.

Shame as the spec and scandium frame are great.

I’ll be keeping my 2010 for a while yet.

Good luck on finding one, they ride well and don’t have wheel clearence issues like some other 29ers.

    That’s great.
What camera did you use and how was it mounted?

That’s about the best on bike trails footage I’ve seen.

    You were right lads cheers.
The drive side bearing was shot.
Hubs are only a few months old that’s why I was convinced it wouldn’t be the bearings.
Had some spare bearings so sorted now.

    Thanks.

    TheGMan

It is as though the bearings are loose. But there not.

It’s due to not being able to pre- load them.

If it had a skewer this would take out the slack, but as it’s bolted the hub stays loose.

It would have to be someone with experience of this specific hub.

    It is still unridable.

Did a Xmas night walk looking for Santa on Friday.

Unridable due to at best 6″ of snow and loads of trees are down which will keep it unridable for a while after the snow has gone.

I'm a bit weary of clamping my carbon road bike down tube.

What do you think, with your experience?

    It's not just you njee.

I used them for 6 months spent time setting them up as instructed, but the left pedal released when not required all the time.

I used Time for years but changed as I got sick of the bearings wearing out too quick.

I have gone back to SPD's and wish i'd never changed from them.

Save your money and use shimano.
