Got slightly off line at the bottom of a short but steep descent at Woburn. The deep dry sand at the bottom offered little grip, therefore no chance to change direction or slow down before hitting the tree just off to the side of the trail – a dead stop from about 15mph. A&E thought I’d been hit by a car. Shattered collar bone and four bruised ribs, along with what the doc called “very impressive soft tissue damage” (gee thanks!). Not fun at my age – tend to ride now with a bit more forward planning about what to do if it all goes a bit wonky…

Just outside Milton Keynes and this prompted a look out the window. Rain with a bit of sleet mixed in. Eh?

Oh dear. Should not have read this post. I have the complete set of faux pas white items. Helmet, seat and grips. Actually, pedals as well. Do I need to move to another forum?

    I’ll get my coat.

Live where I live due to schools and job. In that order. Purely a practical decision, but only 15 minutes from Woburn so could be worse…

As it happens I know a bit about this… When they were sold by GM, as part of the deal the parts business in Saab was made a separate company. It is still going, so not technically new. Some parts have been in short supply during the bankruptcy but getting better rapidly.

And Saab may yet survive – rumours abound that the receivers are talking to lots of potential buyers. Of course it may just be rumours, and none may be serious, but Saabs have always been indestructible…

I use (and like) endomondo. Easy to use. Lots of people like Strava but I think a bit more roadie focused…

You can do real time live streaming from http://www.filmon.com. I use it when away and it works fine as long as hotel wifi is up to snuff.

Here’s mine in bog standard from the factory spec. (except for the pedals) so can’t claim credit for the colour scheme. Taken yesterday morning at Woburn – lovely day for a bike ride!

Nice but looks a bit burly for a CX bike. Is it UCI legal with those discs?

    😉

    Have fun!

I use Spotify for screening as many above, and buy everything I want on CD and rip to iTunes. Occasionally will succumb to impulse buy download from iTunes. Do not have a single track I didn’t pay for – have friends who are musicians…

Got a Zefal No Mud mounted on rear swing arm and works a treat. Fits close to wheel and keeps crap out of seat tube as stops mud getting splattered all over the seat collar. Similar to bodged Decathlon a la first post but no need for cable ties and easy to get mail order if LBS doesn’t stock ’em.

There are lots of small independent specialists that look after older Saabs, usually run by ex. main dealer technicians. Often not too expensive. If you can get a decent price it could be a great car for a few years.

There’s a bogeyman in the woods? Why wasn’t I told? And I’m going for a ride by myself on Friday night!

    What tyres for being scared?

Still using my EB101 – got it for my 21st birthday (a while ago now…) and remember my Dad didn’t want to get it as “it would be obsolete in no time. Still got my original Rotel 820BX in the loft – somehow can’t bring myself to part with it. Sigh…
Anyway +1 for Rega, Project or similar and lots of cheap vinyl around – always worth a rummage in car boot sales etc.

I’m in Bucks watching a horror film through my fingers. If there’s one more bit that makes me jump I’ll be off to read my book. Early night as on a road bimble in the morning…

If you want biggest bang for the buck sound wise and are happy not to have an all in one system, I’d also suggest the following:

    These speakers: Teufel

Add cheapest AV receiver you can find, such as: Cheap Sony

You can get something for well under £400 that should
perform well beyond the price. Teufel are on-line only but you get 8 week trial and can return if you’re not happy. May be worth a go.

It never pays off to lie. However, you can have information you choose not to share. I think best bet is to book some holiday and just not say what it’s for. If asked just say “I have something I need to do”. A dodgy sicky is never a good idea.

+1 for Raymond Chandler. Loved them all.

Just read “The Sisters Brothers”. A warped western (no really). Very good but also an easy read.

A big fan of Iain Banks in either version – with or without the “M” (latter are sci fi but well written and intelligent, may be worth a go even if you think you “don’t like that sort of thing”)

And as you are thinking about Rushdie, I thought that both Midnight’s Children and Shame were brilliant.

    Good luck!

I travel a lot and have used both extensively. I can honestly say that Ryanair are by far the worst airline I have ever used and I hate them with a passion. I am not sure they are even a real company – I suspect they are an experiment being carried out by a business school to see how abusive towards it’s customers a company can get before they will desert it.

Easyjet are much better i.m.o. – no frills but they at least treat you like a human being…

The raceguard linked to in the OP is not going to cut it with the roadie fraternity. I was out with a couple of friends on road bikes at the weekend and one was on CX bike with one of those. Could not ride close behind without getting a proper soaking. I had the SKS raceblades in the second post and those are borderline acceptable – again the roadie purists will not consider them effective enough to ride in a group. If you can’t fit “proper” full guards I think the Crud ones linked to by pedalhead may be the best option – maybe see what others in the group use (those that don’t have a “winter bike” that is as no doubt many will…)

Another vote for PJ Harvey here
    And another for Metronomy
In interest of adding something new to the mix, Pete and the Pirates
That’ll do for now, back to listening to The Rub old hip hop stuff that I found about on here…

I did one, though a long time ago now (early 90’s). I did it to enable a career change, and it worked out for me. If you are simply aiming at self development then most courses should be suitable, but if you have a long term career ambition on the back of it then sadly IME the choice of school makes a big difference. I went to one of the astronomically expensive schools (self funded) and spent some years paying off the loan but it opened a lot of doors. My parents had to put up their house as security on the loan, so no pressure….

Broadly speaking it was a good experience, and chances are you’ll enjoy it. I’d definitely push your employer to help pay – they will benefit from a more qualified employee.

Saw one last year – looked particularly good in the snow! Don’t know who does it but what a nice and at the same time wonderfully pointless thing to do. Top marks to whoever.

Be careful re. the control system if you have a mixed underfloor/radiator system. You will find that underfloor takes a long time to heat up so needs to come on earlier than the radiators, but conversely stays warm longer and so can be turned off earlier. If you have them on two separate circuits with separate control systems it would be a good idea.

Finished “The Business” by Iain Banks last night. A good light weight easy read. Just reading Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” now. Collected short stories and surprisingly good – does not really feel dated at all.

And put me down in the Catch-22 refuseniks group. Didn’t really get on with it at all. At least I tried.

At risk of oversimplifying, I don’t suppose it could be anything as simple as an air-lock could it? Just a thought, but UFH systems can get them. If so a quick flush through could sort it?

Had exactly the same dilemma last year. Bought a Zesty 214 in Evans sale at bargain price. Moon and stick present and correct. Seems it’s that time of year again?

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/lapierre/zesty-214-2011-mountain-bike-ec024837

That’s a hundred quid less than last year. Bargain is that’s your sort of bike. And not, if it isn’t…
