    Orange 5.

I now everyone thinks they’re great. I know they must therefore be great. I know they’re probably better than my bike. But sorry – I’m shallow.

They look like a shonky lash up from a mad bloke’s shed.

There – I said it. Feel better now…

Co-incidentally I’m just back from the physio and about to go out for a bimble on road bike. Broke mine about 8 weeks ago – ribs hurt more than the collar bone/shoulder but now mainly pain free. Was off the pain killers after about 3/4 weeks. Physio has got much of the movement back already, and now working on strength (which should also address remaining pain/discomfort). As for exercise, I just walked for first few weeks (which helped rib/lungs a lot) and started gentle road bike at six weeks. Gentle rides of no more than an hour. Have been told to stay off MTB until 12 weeks, mainly due to risk of coming off again as until about then still fairly easy to break it again and go back to square one. All things considered feel much better now, and good to get out on any sort of a bike. Just be patient and all will be well.

Saw someone riding a BSO on way to work this morning with forks on backwards. Did not look too stable…

In addition to Madonna Inn tip (a must for tacky Americana), you can also see how the yanks can do it properly. Go to Deetjens Big Sur Inn. Not cheap, but wonderful. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Personally I’d love to be able to go with the simplicity of the straight across 9-3 cut. However, to ignore the knowledge of the ancient egyptians risks a mouldy lunch, as they proved that the shape of a pyramid preserves whatever is onside (you will all be familiar of the story of French explorer Bovis finding the preserved cat in the Great Pyramid).

For that reason I’d argue that triangles in the exact proportion of the pyramids is the only way to go. An equilateral triangle with a base of 440 units and sides of 418 (see diagram below) is the usual proportion chosen by sandwich makers with an eye on the longevity of their filling, such that the vertical is therefore 356 units.

You’ll be pleased to know that use of the Egyptian cubit as a measure is not required, as that would make for an unwieldy sandwich. It’s just the ratio that matters.

You need to adjust the bread by trimming unless you make a custom tin for home made loaves.

    I’ve attached a diagram below.

Shattered collar bone and bruised ribs six weeks ago (and I’m just a gentle XC in the woods sort of rider…). Just started gentle pootling on road bike but specialist says no MTB until twelve weeks. Will probably hang on until then, but in this good weather it’s a test of patience…

The STW massive are normally a pretty decent lot – what’s gone wrong today? It’s Friday for crying out loud. Surely the only proper response is sympathy to the OP if you feel inclined and if not start a thread about ramblers to let off steam. Get a grip or you’re all on the naughty step.

Sideways down a bramble covered steep face, upside down? Check!

High speed into a tree to a dead stop that breaks collar bone? Check!

    Just bought some flats…

    Best. Post. Ever.

    Thanks.

Getting same advice from Doc and Mrs Fopster – 12 weeks before behaving as normal. However, as risk of a break on the road bike is so low I have started a few gentle bimbles around the local lanes on the road bike as a first step. Advantage of six weeks off a bike is that even a road ride is great!

Did my collar bone and ribs six weeks ago. Did a short road ride on Saturday and was similarly blissful, and that was before I get back to doing some proper riding. Another few weeks before doc clears mtb – can’t wait…

If we’re doing the fall I particularly like the contrast with the unbearably pretentious outro of the permed bloke on this, followed by the unsettling rants of living legend MES…

I’m going to regret this, but….

Purely out of academic interest what’s the cheapest you reckon I could build up a Singular Griffin with gears? Never done a build but somehow have become strangely captivated by these funny looking things and quite fancy something that I could use for a mixed on-road/off-road commute.

Was thinking about Boardman CX but these just look so much more interesting… Loving the pictures!

Thanks for positive vibes folks. Isn’t STW nice. Now if you can just get my collar bone to heal a bit quicker that’d be lovely…

In the festive fog. Been off bike for 5 weeks due to collar bone being a bit rearranged. Can’t wait to get back on…

Have a vested interest here (involved with them). Have read our obituary many times now. Still here.

Have not yet read a single opinion piece by an “expert” that wasn’t a woeful cut and paste from old news and ill informed speculation.

We’re in a tight spot. But as Churchil said – “when you’re in hell, keep going”.

Which is what we’re doing. Aiming to be back to normal in couple of weeks, accepting there are no guarantees in life…

And know what’s coming, assuming we make it. It’s genius…

Spent 3 years in USA. It’s two countries that happen to share a land mass like some sort of patchwork quilt. One of the countries is first world, the other third, and they butt right up against each other. Very unsettling. One of the best things about coming back was the civilisation of things like the NHS (and I had tip-top insurance over there). It’s a wonderful country in so many ways, but also messed up so badly at the same time.

    Cheap bikes, though.

+1 Carrera Fury. At current offer price nothing to touch it. Mine was great – sadly now sold but great for the money and good enough to last years of slow upgrading if you’re going to stay HT.

Sadly a chunk of my usual XC after work ride is currently messed up by damage caused by the tree felling tractors chewing everything up. I was quite annoyed until I rode into a tree and bust my collar bone. Now that I can’t ride it doesn’t matter – every cloud…

Looking forward to being back on the bike in twelve eleven weeks time, though. Having been riding there for months am amazed how much nice relaxed XC there is with a few more challenging bits when you want them. Still finding new trails – nice place!

Am sitting reading this with my arm in a sling due to knackered collar bone. Going to order some flats next week…

Will be interesting to try and unlearn/relearn.

Zesty’s do not suite tall people with long legs – seat tube angle very slack.

I’m a tall-ish (6ft 1) long legged (34″) sort of chap with arms like a baboon and my XL Zesty seems to fit fine, though I do run the seat well forward on the rails. Mind you, I rode it into a tree the other week and knackered my ribs and collar bone so the love affair with my new french friend is in a more challenging phase…

And yes I know it wasn’t the bikes fault, but I have to blame someone and the tree is bigger than me.

    Ouch.

Siemens often offer 5 yr warranty on much cheaper machines than Miele – might be worth it. I had one but moved and sold to our buyers after couple of years so hard to say much re longevity, but seemed better built than most cheaper end stuff. Got to buy new machine again soon and will get another as can’t afford Miele.

Hell yes. Just sold mine (gone FS) and missing it a bit. Great fun bike that’s cheap enough you don’t have to worry about it.

Had Epicons on my Carrera Fury. It was a great bike, and the fork was pretty decent. Seemed as good as any other basic level air sprung jobbie. Bolt through axle and everything – don’t you love Halfords?

Last year was at a Saab Salomon “Hellrunner” event. The guy who won the over 70s category completed a truly hellish course in an amazing time. When asked, he said he was actually a bit dissapointed with the time but that maybe it wasn’t so bad considering he’d done London Marathon the weekend before…

I suggest you get to 80 before starting to think about “retiring…”

As a cheaper alternative to getting a SS, is it OK to just stop changing gear? If so, do you HAVE to also grow a beard or as long as you have some sort of dormant gear shifting capability can you remain clean shaven?

    😉

Done this and was very cold – heat loss to floor was a killer. If you have inflatable mattress rather than a cell one you’ll need something pretty thick underneath you – duvet on top will be fine. I bought a sleeping bag from the local camping shop after one night and was comfy for the rest of the trip. £20 well spent…

I came across just such an obstacle yesterday evening – albeit not as gnarly as all the Youtube links being posted on here. My technique was to scream loudly whilst hanging on for dear life. Seemed to work a treat.

I’m also using the “heavier one” from post above helmet mounted. Does a superb job in conjunction with a P7 on the bars (same emitter as your Magicshine but in torch format) and plenty enough runtime for an after-work ride. Not much use if you’re doing a 24hr event, but then you knew that already. Highly recommended.

Yes. And like a previous poster, only since I found this site and discovered it was a legal requirement…

Actually the puncture finding thing is common sense – I probably should have thought of it myself.

I have a Spiritualized album somewhere. Not bothered listening to it in years.

Unlike Arcade Fire. And Public Enemy.

Must dig out Staight Outta Compton again…
