Most car speedos are miles out Where did you read this piece of nonsense? Do car manufacturers not bother making speedos properly then?

there’s generally a likely variation of up to 10% either way. tyre pressures and other factors all affect their accuracy. if you have a satnav then put your current speed on the display and compare it to what your speedo says. our focus shows 50 on the speedo when we’re actually doing just over 45.

Like I said, other people would have considered your behaviour to be selfish and potentially dangerous…

Panopticon – am I missing something?

see above. or see the explanation on the very site to which you link.

the panopticon is a famous prison design that involved a central watchtower and a circular distribution of cells around it, meaning that the prisoners could, in theory, always be being watched or never. it was impossible to tell.

it’s used in theoretical discussion these days to describe a situation where you are forced to conform to a set of rules because there is a chance that at that very moment someone is watching you to see if you break them.

with these average speed cameras, as opposed to the fixed ones that you brake for specifically, you have to go at a constant speed for 10 mile stretches because the only way to find out if they really are checking involves getting penalty points and/or a fine. hence, a panopticon.

those pics up there are both of me, and the others on the ride all tried to stop me and restrain me but i wouldn’t listen. consequently, four innocent pedestrians lost their lives. i don’t feel guilty though.

i’ve always used spesh fatboys all year round, and am just careful when conditions are greasy. they have no tread to speak of, but i’ve had no problems. they last bloody ages as well, and i’ve only had 2 or 3 punctures in 4 years.

i like the 3/4 thermawhatsit for autumn/winter and start of spring – never feel the need for full length ones.

when i left school, my teacher’s parting piece of wisdom was, “remember, boys, there are a lot of stupid people out there.”

for some reason this thread has reminded me of that…

anyone who interferes with the sport while it’s going on is fair game, in my opinion. and there’s plenty of precedent for that view in many, many other sports, as well.

here’s a textbook, and fantastic, example:

    yeah i know – i didn’t really consider the laziness factor…

    i feel so ashamed!

now there’s an idea! next london ride will include a stop-off in traf sq for lion aerials!

haha, thanks all for the tips – the ride’s actually only a mile further then the commute i do every day so i will probably do that. was just wondering as was initially thinking of riding, then thought i could ride to kings x and get the train from there, then the thought struck me that the tube was an option, if allowed.

    so to conclude, i’m riding!

and by the way, looking back, my favourite bit of the ride was definitely from spitalfields to the pub – combination of lots of little alleys, steps(!) and the thames path was quality. good fun!

nice pics there aP! i particularly like the first one :D

SaJ, i always seem to end up at that pub by accident whenever i’m in that area, it’s like a magnet for borough market area pint drinking!

I’m guessing serendipity rather than design here. An arrow as a symbol for a delivery company is a totally cheesy design cliche anyway.

no it was all planned, and supposedly pretty hard to work in effectively without it being really overbearingly obvious. there’s a pretty interesting article somewhere on the global hyperweb about it, if you like that sort of thing!

excellent time was had, shame i had to depart after just one pint – sounds like you were all there for a few more than that!

was good to meet you all and the somewhat aimless rambling route was good fun too!

looking forward to next time, i might even bring another top!

well i shall be there, i think i know where the monument is at the eye but if anyone sees me circling aimlessly in the wrong spot could you let me know!

it’s a lovely bike. though someone pulled me up the other day for rim/tyre logo alignment so i feel compelled to point out that, although they are undoubtedly aligned, the adjacent logs on rim and tyre are different on the different wheels.

10/10 for everything else, though ;)

good move, they seem to have pretty good cover by default and, unlike all the others i tried, were happy with the values of my 2 bikes.

well i’m sure you’ll all be pleased to know i went for ING – came to £386 including 2 very expensive bikes declared. not too bad.

ok, i’ve just gone to renew ours and been informed that the max cover for a bike is £2,000 so now i quite quickly need to get it sorted. M&S website doesn’t appear to be working. any other alternatives to recommend? hiscox comes out at £480p.a. including items up to the value of my bike…
