I’m probably set for most things, in fairness. Except a proper headset press… a Park Tool press may fit the bill, or I may just put the money towards the Asgard unit I need to get anyway…

    Cheers all, useful input!

ok, more good points ta. annoyingly i have needed a torque wrench for a while, so a nice one with a few sockets would be the perfect thing, but my dad got me a cheapy topeak one. i’m sure it’s fine, but a decent one would have been just right! (i know, first world problems etc… 🙁 )

ok good suggestions, cheers – the reason i’m finding it tricky is that i have most things that i need, so any kit would overlap quite a lot with what i already have. it’s a question of either getting better versions of things that i already have or trying to identify gaps, of which there aren’t many. this present may have been more useful 5 years ago!

I’m similar – earlier in the year I thought I’d get 4,000 (non-commuting) miles. That’s now not going to happen, so 3,500 is my only achievable landmark but it’s still a way off… 😡

Deffo – off up to Yorkshire, my father-in-law’s into cycling as well (I’m a bit apprehensive about being able to keep up judging by his recent Strava efforts!), so the bike’s coming too. Boxing Day ride, then another on the 28th. Then a few more once we’re up in North Yorks for New Year’s. Bit worried about ice on the roads, mind!

Edit – Looking at some of the above posts, I think a few people may have missed the “anyone with kids” element of OP… Either that or they are impressively dedicated to biking/luckier than me!

but purely for cohesion reasons I would get the chainset that best matches the rest of the spec, rather than having a mixture of different tier components if it can be avoided.
    is this a problem?

In respect of my personal OCD, yes. Otherwise, probably not.

you can remotely set recordings on it when away from the house, by the way.

Don’t think I can on my one. I’ve got a Humax 2000T which, despite being a latest model, doesn’t seem to have that functionality.

    ah, I didn’t realise they do non-YouView boxes too…

I can use it as a remote for my Humax Freeview box, but I never really bother as it doesn’t do anything differently than the normal remote.

I recently got a Steinhart Ocean GMT for well under the £500 price, and I absolutely love it. As do most people who have seen it since. Very nice, check them out here.

And they will in turn claim against the provider of the service. These things take time and money to properly substantiate, though, so some of the smaller sellers may not be able to properly claim for their losses…

My colleague has a Brompton and it constantly seems to break. Though I don’t think he ever does any maintenance work or gets it serviced, so that may be why.

Anyway, I was just browsing around and spotted this – http://www.cyclingdeal.com.au/buy/hasa-full-carbon-folding-foldable-bike-9-speed-20/MINIMAX-C
if I was after a folder I’d have one of these in a heartbeat – £900 seems like a bargain to me! You would obviously have to get it here from Aus…

God knows why I clicked through that far but I did – on the stockists page almost all the links are to Aroundabout Sound, rather than the retailers specified. This may or may not be an error…

Petrol cost for 2 hour (each way?) journey compared to courier cost?

    theflatboy

Exactly – I wouldn’t want to be turning right from the middle on a bike there, knowing that traffic could feasibly be turning with you on either side, relies too much on the turning line different size vehicles need to take…

Not that it excuses the taxi forcing you wide, but I’m fairly sure both left and right lanes at that end of Southwark Bridge are right turn (with the left being both left and right turn)…

I didn’t clock it first time round – those bikes are all gorgeous except that Lynskey frame… I’m a big fan of ti and that build is exemplary, but… that frame is hideous… what were they thinking?! 😕

Poweramp is if not the default response at least a very popular one. I use it, it’s excellent. Give that a go.

I would be pretty pleased with myself as well if I’d just stuck £1,500 worth of chainsets on (some of) my bikes 😆

Sums it up pretty well, I’d say! It’s a bit niggly when it comes to navigating pre-determined routes, and gets upset and doesn’t adjust for if you miss one turn and then get back on track, for example. Mostly it’s good, and you get used to the slight issues it has!

That is an absolute bargain, to be fair. I have one – it is not without its flaws but well worth that price.

    Is that a downhill roadbike?

Could you just post that picture of your road bike again to remind the group of its “unique” configuration?

    Di2 on an MTB….what a total waste of time. I mean seriously…electronics…on a bike…

Joking aside, I genuinely don’t like the idea of adding electronic elements to the key functions of a bicycle – it goes against the mechanical purity of the way it works, however advanced and complex that may be these days with e.g. air suspension, in my opinion. Lights etc. are different in my eyes as they are not core parts of the bike actually functioning.

I realise others may not understand this perspective, of course.

My Craft W/S top arrived and it is absolutely lovely – not cold enough to wear it out yet but looking forward to giving it a go. Recommended if they’re still on offer!

Well of course people like to spend money on different things and are totally entitled to.
I just can’t see how a watch could provide as much fun as a bike

How much fun would you expect to get from that £1,500 bike in 20/30/40+ years?

Ignoring the colour requirement almost completely, I’d say Cartier Tank Francaise. That’s what I went for in a similar situation, anyway.

Edit – you could get one with your colour requirements, but nowhere near that price.

Edit 2 – I’m talking used at that price as well, but looking like new. Chronos24…

Edit 3 – in fact you would get gold and stainless for your budget

Even if it wasn’t the original word, I still maintain that “evangelical” carries the meaning OP is after, in that context.

Add-on PSA – the longsleeve version of the Craft Windstopper layer is <£30 at Prendas, rather than Merlin who only have the short sleeve.
