Try and run your forks a bit softer, try some spesh bg gel gloves, ritchey foam grips are a bit more forgiving than lock-ons if you can get on with them too.

before you buy some octo pads…
were your brakes bedded in sufficiently?
are they rubbing at all on the discs?

I'd avoid the FP's lots of militant ramblers up there waiting for an excuse to complain about MTBers. Have a look in the VG book for legit route ideas. But I usually treat Stanage as a separate ride. Redmires, Stanage pole, Stanage Plantation, road across Burbage Moor to Lady Canning Plantation, Blacka Moor, Houndkirk, Ringinglow and back to Redmires.

of all the tubeless ready tyres I have tried, the Specialized Purgatory has been the easiest to inflate, it seats quickly and sidewalls seal the best. Tyre rides well too!

    Spesh Eskar Control 2.3 700g
    Spesh Purgatory Control 2.2 650g

I like these tyres! run them tubeless, both blow up big and seem to cope well with wide variety of conditions. tend to use Eskars in the Peaks/Lakes as they feel great in rocky situations. Purgatory copes ok in amongst rocks but I find it doesnt track so well, I use it for more general rides, trail centres, local woods etc

MaxxD on the bars and a P7 torch on my helmet is a great combo. I had a vision 4 and swapped to a MaxxD no real difference in performance but much neater IMO. P7 is as bright as the MaxxD as it's got a more focused centre spot, perfect for the twisty bits!

I'm surprised you want mud tyres for the lakes as most of the riding seems to have a rock base. Not had this problem myself (but then I only tend to use mud x's in the winter filth) but the tyres do seem very soft

I just use the basic 991, I have had a cross step last year when prices were cheaper but didn't find the extra strength was worth the money. Never tried the hollow pin as I'm a 16 stone chap and I would worry about it snapping!

PC991, easy to clean as its got a powerlink, but they don't last that long.

Can't really agree with op, rode Llandegla last Sunday for only the second time and really enjoyed the place, loved its berm-jump-berm-switchback nature and as I went faster found the smiles grew broader (plenty of grip here too – unlike bits of Whinlatter). We had ridden the Beast at Coed y Brenin the day before and my riding buddy said he much preferred Llandegla, I wouldn't go quite that far personally but I think it makes for a fun few hours and I like how it feels very different to other trail centres.

I've got a maxx d for the bars and a dx P7 torch for my head, perfect combo IMHO. P7 represents really good value and higher brightness than the exposure and costs about $50 inc charger and batteries

I can recommend sfb's routes, been up to lakes a few times armed with bogtrotters routes to follow and always had top days out. His maps are referenced with photos to give you a good idea of terrain and what the ride covers too.

I found the ergo ones slip when they get wet, never had a problem with the standard ritchey grips tho. I just use water to slide them on, lock ons are ok but weigh nearly as much my bars! plus I find foam grips are more comfortable too

It should be the other way round surely! I sometimes wonder if the dog I ran over (sending me over the bars at some speed) survived the experience, at the time it ran back into the woods yelping as I writhed about on the floor swearing at its owner.

have a look at the Spesh Purgatory, got some to try in August and really like em, from riding the peak district to sherwood pines, they are fairly cheap (£22 each) blow up big and fairly light too.

spesh gloves are the best cold weather gloves i have tried but you need to take care with the outer gloves liner as it eventually comes out if you remove your hand while still wearing the inner- does that make sense?

they are warm tho, I suffer with really cold fingers during winter night rides and last winter these gloves were good even during the snow and ice.

It's a fair point sfb, good either way i'm sure, the drop down to Roych from where we passed you is a lot of fun though, and I like the challenge of the steps climbing up Rushup. Jacobs as a down is a slow down for me whereas the drop down Oaken Clough is less steep but fast, like the grassy field down to the Kinder reservoir too

Congratulations Pete, and the very best of luck tomorrow. Its better to know what exactly what you're facing no matter how hard that can seem at the time, just try not to think to deeply about things and take one day at a time.
