    Thought I wouldn't be coming :(

I've had a bad cold all week and the lbs has still got my stumpjumper as the fsr bearings haven't arrived despite being promised by specialized that they had been sent on wed! Good news tho!!! Dom at Bridgegate Cycles is so sorry to let me down he's lending me a brand new Enduro to have a play on – happy days :D

Hope I don't bend it or ride like a big girl either :(

Tr's are ok, just seem a bit slow rolling compared to mud x's, they prob have more traction in really sloppy sections but I think on balance they are less accomplished overall

tyres is the cheapest way to shed the most weight IMO choose carefully though! forks are often heavier than aftermarket items but if they are cheap ones its the feel as much as the weight you'll notice if you swap them out

This chap is like an OAP clarkson, making amusing generalisations and blaming anyone but himself.Erosion is a fact of life wherever man goes, walkers horses bikes vehicles all contribute, there are plenty of paths that never see a bike and need repair just from footfall.

The walkers I have encountered are largely good natured, usually impressed that you are biking in the hills, I think provided you're not frightening them with excessive speed they are mostly fine. The only walkers with bad attitudes I have ever encountered seem to be the over 60's ramblers in larger groups, who have grown old not been used to, or accepting of bikes on their beloved walks.

expect some mud and standing water on the kitchener but other less traveled parts are holding up ok. Pines is more about old school woodland trails that reward fitness/effort, if gravity appeals stay in the peaks.

the bike you choose must surely depend on where you ride most and where your grins come from. If 90% of your riding is woodland singletrack, and you are an xc whippet, then a heckler with 36's probably wont be the right bike, but if its the peaks and lakes then an orange 5/heckler with a couple of build options might be the way to go

on my hope wheels I run hopes 10mm bolt up axle, just need 1 allen key much cheaper, stronger and stiffer than the rws 10mm option IMHO

    thefallguy

I think you can just torque em a bit tighter than a standard qr

    thefallguy

I use the RWS skewers with my hope pro 2's. They come in different flavours-There is a version that fits a standard QR, but the one I have that looks like a bolt through needs a 9mm conversion kit from hope (two new caps) as the dropouts rest on the body of the skewer.

Had some captains which are a good tyre for Sherwood Pines but I much prefer the Specialized Purgatorys that I replaced them with, slightly softer, more grippy, larger volume, slightly heavier, not noticably slower rolling – still great around the woods but much better suited to the peaks than. Best bit is the LBS in Retford will do 2 for £40 :-)

think spesh tyres are dual compound too

Yours will be organic, sintered do tend to be a better bet if you are riding through the winter grit.

My organic pads last 5-600 miles in the warm months, in the winter I'm lucky to get 200 miles from a set of organic pads. make sure you bed the new ones in for maximum life.

Spesh Sub Zeros here, it's a reasonably breathable waterproof 2 part glove, and is warm to at least -8°C (well it was last week) which is great as I normally get really cold fingers during winter night rides.

Only drawback is outer glove liner can come out with the inner glove unless you hold the fingers as you pull out your hand – and are a real pain in the rse to get back in.

I used some last year as a summer tyre, didn't find them especially tight mine were sworks version and I don't know if they are easier to get on and off than the control version.

as a side note. In the summer I tried Spesh purgatory tyres (as I ripped the sidewall of the captain and the other was a bit worn) and I much prefer them they blow up bigger than claimed arn't much heavier and seem to offer much more grip. Through the winter they are better than captains too hooking up much more but not as good as my mud x's for ultimate filth.

I think these from merlin take a bit of beating, you cant buy the much more than stans rims usually for this money

I've got used to getting through bb's at a rate of knots, first I thought it was that I was using truvativ crank set (3 mth average lifespan), splashed out on a new xtr cranks, the bb's lasted bit longer on average 4 – 6 months, so last april bought a CK bb and its been faultless so far so I think I'm just about in profit! :-)
