I have an M4 front and X2 rear that replaced my juicys, seem more positive, with no drag that I used to get with the avids. I like the lever feel and lever adjustability/pad contact is easier to set up, they feel so solid. Lever setup sees them along way inboard, I use the Hope matchmaker style clamp with SRAM XO shifters and they feel perfect.

    Recommend them? Oh yes.

sworks captains are a good xc bet, really good in most conditions, blow up large for quoted size, reasonably light at 540g, option to run tubeless too.
eskars are bigger, heavier at 740g but are great as an all mountain option.

They’ve got some wigwams at the hotel at Mabie Trailhead too, whilst the encourage MTBers the same can’t be said for fires.

    Rate em

ran them tubeless @ 20psi down some very gnarly lakeland descents without issues. Day to day love the grip and surefooted feel.

mine are the control version and sidewalls have held up well and I am a clumsy 16 stone rider!

when I first got them found they washed out a bit but since running them at a bit lower pressure I have had no issues.

or you could get the 010 model, supposed to be further improvements, this also means 09’s should start being discounted.

I’m using the standard size stans rim strips in my 5.1’s, after a year no issues and inflated miles easier than 4.2’s too

If its not the rails into the saddle making the noise then try putting a strip of electrical tape along each rail (don’t overlap it though), that worked for me after much messing about with new bolts, grease etc.

    I don’t unclip till I hit the ground… :(

Being an Spd user, I feel faster and more confident to push harder than if I were on flats, from the top of hope cross to hayfield you shouldn’t need to dab anyway, but it’s prob why I dont like going down Jacobs that much

Benjag- I’d have to disagree about Jacobs (short walk v long walk!) been best as a down, too short and steep (for me) where the rundown from the other side goes on and on :D, roych is great either direction and fair point about rushup methinks

Got the BG Experts very comfy and enjoy the rigidity of carbon sole, 3 strap closure is a bit lighter than buckle if you’re that bothered.

Carbon sole on my first pair wore out in 14 months where xt pedal meets the cleat and then cracked which I put down to too much walking up steep bits in the lakes/peaks! So new pair sport some crank bros protector plates.

    Best: Honda Accord Type-r
fantastic engine, just makes me smile thinking about it…

    Worst: Austin Maestro
re-heated maxi, gearbox made of finest cheese and rubber, just awful – made an allegro seem great

should be fine, chain length is usually measured around big front, big rear plus extra link but not through the mech cage but if its loose you can try removing a pair of links-only danger is the big big combination may not work and could snap mech off

Have a look at the GPSies.com site, mbr did the c2c a couple of years ago and there is a link from their site.

The apex is a great daysack, with lots of great features and soft lined phone ipod pockets, but it doesn’t sit on your back well if overfilled, so travel light!

I’ve got a stumpy and absolutely love it, but we are all different and the only way to find out what suits you re geometry, ride handling weight size travel etc is to demo some bikes. It might cost £45 a day to demo a bike but if you’re spending a couple of grand it makes some sense.

Used stans kit on dt 4.2 and 5.1 rims with spesh captains/eskar 2bliss tyres and bonty mud x’s too. no problems inflating with track pump but 5.1/eskar combo was easiest, initially had to use a co2 pump on 4.2 rims but got the knack now and don’t need it. Captains run between 32 – 37lbs pressure any lower they tend to roll. Eskars good down to about 15lbs! No punctures all year, won’t go back to tubes.

some plusher forks, big tyres at low pressure, don’t hold on so tightly???

but I didn’t think the route was the all-time classic

there are some better routes but it makes for a great day out with some great scenery, I love the drop through castle crag. And it is better if the cheeky bits are included. Its prob over hyped, but it is one of the lakes ‘must rides’.

a large group of blind ramblers

    aren’t they all? :(

You need a supple tyre (IMO) for off road riding to give some grip, go for some chunkier tyres High Rollers/Nevegals etc or go tubeless if you want to really avoid the flats

Use a stans kit with the standard rims and you’ll be sorted.

Eskars don’t come up too huge, not as big as the Spesh resolutions I used to run

    thefallguy

540g for captains and run em tubeless for even more weight loss

    thefallguy

all of the above is good plus if your bike is full suss, also check that your shifter cable isn’t being pulled tight as the bike squats when you accelerate can cause ghost shifting

    spesh 2.0 much bigger than a maxxis/panaracer/schwalbe 2.0

try the captains, faster rolling than panaracer IMO, and I find them good in all conditions
