mbr – from their articles I still can't work out what route(s)/way round to ride Helvellyn.

We rode from Patterdale up the side of Ullswater, left up road to Dockray, then BW up Matterdale Common to Great Dodd. This is a longish but easy ascent. Then its all good, all the way to Helvellyn, we rode? down Dollywaggon Pike but was hard until reaching the tarn, with some walky bits until reaching the Hut at the top of Grisedale Valley. We will turn round at Dollywaggon next time and drop down sticks pass or Glenridding BW.

It should be a straight line if the lever is in the right place! to get the old one out just cutting the end off is the best way, that prevents dragging muck back through the shifter

Surprised you had an issue with that, usually takes just a few seconds. Just make sure the shifter is in right position and your cable isn't frayed.

I have to say I was underwhelmed.

Which routes do you prefer then? I like cutgate as I think for a short ride it has lots of what the dark peak does best, fast downs, steep downs, jumps/drop offs, rocky bits, stream riding, bog negotiation, gentle ups, steeper rockier sections, fords, slabs etc….

Dollywaggon certainly isn't boring to ride down, steps are just too gnarly for me and once you start hitting the drainage channels which are wide and deep it becomes a walk which is tedious – Once you are past the staircase its more do-able, suggest there are much better ways down though.

aldi one for about £70 inc accessory pack, great for initial tubeless inflation, paint spraying etc. They don’t always have them in stock so keep checking.

Whatever you choose, run them tubeless at lower pressures to find more grip. I run spesh eskars which feel really sketchy in the wet at 40psi, but when i halve the pressure it transforms the tyre and releases lots more grip.

just do a search on here! I won’t touch their mail order with a barge pole.

Its prob ok if you don’t mind ringing them everday to get a different story of why your stuff hasn’t been sent out, and you prefer 8 week delivery rather than next day.

The drop down is worth it if you’ve time, from the cairn there is a steep techy bit followed by lightning fast slabs that spill out onto peaty moorland before the final steep techy down to bridge. On the way back the first bit is a bit of a push for me but worth the effort.

We set off from Langsett at 6.20 and were back for 8.20, moderate pace with a couple of stops. Only rode to top of cairn tho, if you drop down to the Slippery Stones bridge its only and extra 2 miles but add an hour!

steve_b: no boggyness, just multiple line choices and all firm, fast and dry

Are these the zig zags? – http://www.multimap.com/s/ABRvbHcW

thats the ones, the shady woodside stone climb out on to the moor from the reservoir head – sorry for the sh*te description – is that what is refered to as coronation street cobbles? or is that climb out the other side of the gate on Langsett side back towards car park?

Had a great ride, trails were so dry and fast, not a trace of water or mud anywhere. No walkers either, Bonus!! Sorry no photos, too busy having fun

Route (thanks for the opinions everyone): rode out over the dam wall, cut right up BW to North America, then up gnarly hill to left (not going through gate) join cut gate path proper and up to cairn. Route back down same way to North america then left thro gate up to cut gate BW then down zig zags and back to carpark.

Only 10 miles but what a great 10 miles they are.

which descent back to Langsett do people prefer? The right fork to North America or the drop down to the cobbled woodland zig zag? I tend to always do the latter.

    or a spider?

The False Widow, a purple and black creature with a body the size of a 1p piece, is said to carry enough venom to kill a human.

Since arriving in Devon from the Canary Islands, the spider has established colonies in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall.

The spiders do not usually survive in colder parts of the UK, but a series of mild winters have led them to migrate to other areas.

Spider recorder David Haigh, of Cheltenham, has reported sightings of the species in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

One was in a shed in Tewkesbury and the other was spotted in Longney, he said.

The False Widow is one of 12 arachnid species known to bite humans in the UK.

the ladder drops at Sherwood Pines were both unofficial I believe, and explains why fc removed them.

The small ladder on the Kitchener trail is sadly missed by me and my riding buddies, it seems official trail obstacles now need to have a warning sign with them to indicate higher risk/ bail out options. Seeing how many families (kids with stabilisers- mums with sandals etc) I see on the Kitchener at weekends its removal shouldn’t have been a surprise.

Got some revs from Merlin last year and unfortuately I really don’t like them, they leak oil when left in car (on their side) or upside down, found them a pain to set up with the dual chambers, Lockout has packed up a couple of times too. Still they were cheap!

I have fox float RL 120 on my main bike, and in contrast I have had no issues whatsoever, easy to setup and performance was always more confidence inspiring. Lifted the seals occasionally but always found everything ok. Despite all the naysayers on here I love em.

And if having to replace the the worn annodised stantions every 3 years is the downer – its one I’d happily pay rather than put up with the Revs.

Go and check it out for yourselves would be my advice, I went last year for the first time and loved it. But the only what you’ll know for sure is to ride there. As good as it used to be? possibly not, but I don’t know what i’ve missed so why worry?

Perhaps I’m easily pleased, as I love riding everywhere from Kirroughtree to Sherwood Pines to the Lakes and Peak District to Dalby and the welsh trail centres.

Last pair of carbon soled shoes I bought (spesh) lasted a year before the wear near the cleat (Shimano) caused the sole to crack. Needless to say new pair have got the crank bros plates installed.

Lol @ Simon! Co2 tends to make the sealant go off in my experience, good track pump or compressor is preferable.

watch the videos on the stans website

if you are using new tyres inflate them with a tube and leave overnight – this will help with inflation.

use plenty of soap to help rim seat, take valve out to help with initial inflation. Easier if you get someone to pump while you hold wheel/tyre. As a last resort – gas cartridge inflator!

I usually put sealant in after using the stans syringe, take your time with sealing the sidewalls, can take up to 20 mins to get a non ust tyre to be airtight.

Max and Bernie both seem like they’ve lost the plot IMO.

Bernie was being all pro Silverstone today WTF?

Max and his 40m budget cap! what sort of budget do Man U, Real Madrid etc operate? Seems like Max has lost touch with how much the F1 teams put into the economy, half of the small specialist engineering firms rely on F1 teams

Was at Silverstone today with 100,000 like minded GP fans – whatever happened to the old saying ‘if it aint broke don’t fix it’?

Just swapped to Hope TechM4/X2 combo from Avid Juicy Ultimates

the Avids were ok but were tempremental and needed tlc to keep the pistons from sticking and catching, they were ok to bleed once you had the knack to stop the lever being a bit soft. Pad adjuster seemed vague, always plenty of feel and enough power

The hopes feel bomb proof, levers feel engineered and solid, lever adjustment really positive. Seem to offer more power and modulation than the Avids. I like the made in the UK and designed for the UK filth aspect of them too.
