The 15″ Clockwork will be fine for him, 589mm ETT.

Thanks for your input so far.

Its going to be either Arch or Crest’s but I’m still no closer to deciding.

They will be going on a Solaris, I’m about 14 stone kitted up, ride mainly XC, not to rocky but will be jumping occasionally.

I weigh 14 stone kitted up too and I’ve never noticed it, neither has my bro. Also the Fox damping is much better than RS otherwise I’d have bought RS as they are way cheaper.

You are slightly missing the point though, I never asked which forks were best, I asked what a Solaris rode like at 120mm.

And 29er’s love tubeless. Go tubeless instead of spending loads on fancy finishing kit.

I will definitely be going tubeless Neil.

I have 120mm Reba forks on mine which are far superior to the 120mm Fox RLC forks on my Rumblefish. Much stiffer than the flexy Fox.

Not sure I believe that mate, I’ve had Fox 32’s on loads of bikes and my brother has pretty much always had the RS equivalent (Rev’s or Reba) on his for comparison, there’s no difference in stiffness.

Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind and I imagine you are right about heavy wheels on a 29er.

That looks nice Bikeneil, the duck egg is growing on me.

How do you find the Crests (any noticeable flex) and how much do you weigh if you don’t mind me asking?

That is very nice KingofBiscuits, what bars are they?

I’ll probably run them at 100mm, I just wanted the option without spending £75 if I ever fancied experimenting, plus I prefer Fox.

What rims are you running stickman? I’m thinking Arch will be the best compromise?

I’ve gone for some 120mm Fox Float 32 RLC’s because 2013 Rockshox can’t be adjusted without buying a new air spring for £75.

So has anyone run a Solaris at 120mm?

    1 1/8th is dead

Not on most HT frames I’ve looked at.

The Turner has a tapered steerer

    http://spokemagazine.com/2013/09/23/forkn-wheels-x-fusion-and-wtb-on-the-burner/

Is that not a tapered fork Marge?

Think I’m going to go for a straight steerer anyway for future compatibility options.

How can you see the steerer tube when the fork is fitted?

    Errr, the crown is smaller….

    Thanks Pimpmaster.

I still haven’t demoed one yet but I decided on a medium after having a quick go on an 18″ Boardman Pro 29er today. It had a 610mm ETT (6mm more than the medium Solaris) with a 70mm stem and 700mm flat bars. The length was spot on (could probably run a shorter stem and be comfortable too) but at max pedal height I had roughly 5 inches of seatpost showing, so a 19″ would be out of the question.

Nice one, put some photos up when you get it built.

I’m going for a medium, just need to a few bits sold.

Did you win the eBay frame Timc?

Over-tightening? I did follow the recommended torque limits

Just asking for advice, so that I don’t over tighten again

You either did or you didn’t?

I think the torque for the bolts is 5nm which isn’t very tight.

Have you ridden one Timc or are you just going for it?

Ahh not sure mate, stick it on ebay and I’m sure you’ll get a decent price for it though. I’m really after a nearly new one.

    How tall are you Timc?

I’m still undecided on size 😆

I have an inline post on my current bike so am thinking I could get away with a medium with a set back post and still be able to run a shorter stem.

What condition is it in Sean and how much do you want for it?

That would be brilliant Pimpmaster, thank you.

A 50mm stem on a large would be 10mm shorter than my bike now Bregante, to be honest I could go do with 10mm longer if anything.

It seems a lot of people on here ride very short bikes for their size. One dude on the other thread said he was 5’11” on a medium with a 50mm stem. I don’t see how he does it, thats only 20mm longer than my Mrs bike overall and shes 5’2″.

Thanks Pete & Scott. I’m going for the 2nd hand large frame, Paul was pretty certain it will fit with a short stem as that’s how they were designed.

Danti – I currently have 711mm Haven bars and an 80mm stem on my bike which has a 602 top tube (fits me perfectly). I had the same bars and a 90mm stem on the Soul.

A medium Solaris has a 604 ETT, a large has a 624 ETT. So it will either be a medium with an 80mm, or a large with a 60mm stem. I’m not sure how much seat post I’ll have showing on a large though.

Sok – I think a large Soul is the same size as a medium Solaris so that makes sense, thanks.

    Thanks CP

My normal riding is all day XC but with quite a bit of tight twisty singletrack in there too.

I am 5’11” with a 33 inch inseam (mistake on the previous thread, I said 32″ but remeasured last night), I would say I have long-ish arms.

Weight is definitely back wheel biased.

I prefer a longer TT, I had a medium Soul which was perfect with a 90mm stem.

I don’t generally lower my seat, but I would if I had a dropper post which is quite likely in the near future.

I have a demo booked for next week but I’ve seen an nearly new large for sale which will probably be gone by then and it would save me a bit of money.

I was hoping for more than two people my height to offer their experiences to be honest Bikeneil, and that thread wasn’t about sizing (although I did ask).

I doubt someone reading the thread title “Solaris vs Soul – help me decide” would think, “ahh, he needs help deciding on what size frame to go for, I’ll offer him my advice….”

A large with a 60mm stem will be the same as my current bike with an 80mm stem (which is spot on), I have ape arms and shortish legs.

Ononeorage – I live in Edenbridge but we have family in Hatfield so I can demo when visiting.

Would anyone be kind enough to measure the standover on their large for me please? It would help me out a lot!

Paul from Cotic has recommended a large with a short stem for my height. Really looking forward to test riding one now!

Thanks for the replies so far. I’ve managed to get a test ride on a Solaris at Kinetic Cycles in Hitchin, a very helpful chap.

The demo bike is a large and I’m 5’11” with a 32″ inseam. I prefer a long TT so I’m guessing a large with a short stem would be a better bet to keep the steering quick rather than a medium with an 80mm stem?

How tall are you Metalheart and what size do you have? Nice collection by the way!!!

Edit: I previously had a medium Soul with an 80mm stem which it felt too short for me and gave me back ache.

A big LOL @ people who think you need 140mm of travel to have fun on a bike or ride a certain place.

    How times have changed.

@ 5’7″ an XS is definitely too small unless you like long stems and layback seatposts.

Was that size in the sale or did you intentionally buy a a size smaller so you could run a 20 ft long seat post?

Edit: Ahhh I see, you bought it cracked, got it fixed, then put a 20 ft long seat post in the frame so you can crack it again.

I like your style, a serial bike murderer.

The single mother-of-two had earlier told of how she convinced doctors the operation was necessary because her flat chest was ruining her life.

On Wednesday, Cunningham told ITV’s Daybreak the surgeon had to give her 36DD implants just to achieve the appearance of a 36C – because a medical condition meant she had no breast tissue.

Google her, I don’t see the problem myself.

Yes, yes…..29ers are definitely going to relegate 26ers to history.

    650b stomps on 29ers.

Basically in anything that requires lots of speed changes or elevation changes….. 29ers get destroyed.

The UK downhill scene requires good handling in tight low speed corners and acceleration under pedaling.

Both something which it seems 29ers suck balls for.

Obviously it was the bikes that won the races and nothing to do with the people riding them……
