It is standard practice to drive half in the hard shoulder on a single carriageway road – most of the highways are A roads, then both directions use the space in the middle as an overtaking lane, sometimes at the same time.
That’s good intel to have ahead of time, thanks @hels! Could be fun in the dark…
thebunkFull MemberI know very little as it’s all been a bit last minute! Caves sound great, and I saw something about a gorge…
thebunkFull MemberThanks so much @sadexpunk!
We have a villa booked in Kamilari. It has a pool and a BBQ and the weather looks like it will still be good. Am looking for things to do with an easily bored 10 year old girl, but also need to recharge batteries, so easy excursions and nice tavernas/beaches/tavernas on beaches would be good.
We’ll have to spend a day at the waterpark, but otherwise from what I can see there are enough good things to keep us occupied in the south that don’t mean loads of driving.
thebunkFull MemberAlso got an iPad Pro from Curry’s eBay outlet 5 years ago that is still heavily used today.
I’ve purchased “refurb” iPhones from eBay. Just check that the returns policy is fair and send back if they aren’t any good. Though I’m not sure if you can check iPad battery health can you? That and the screen condition are the two things that you’re likely to want to send one back for.
thebunkFull MemberThere are loads of versions on Apple Music, one of them must be toddler friendly. Theres a setting somewhere to filter out explicit content. This version censors sh*t but leaves in piss  https://music.apple.com/us/album/my-way/1440842682?i=1440843064&uo=4&app=music
There’s even a lullaby version but I had to stop looking & listen to Portishead for several hours to get my carefully curated recommendations algorithm back on track.
thebunkFull MemberAppreciate there are differences as my daughter moved from Android to iOS, but they aren’t that big.
If you set the age of the user then the App Store will prevent them seeing apps rated higher. For instance WhatsApp is rated 17+. No idea how the ratings are set.
The challenge is that each app may also have features that vary in age appropriateness. But often they have their own parental controls. Though most parents aren’t savvy enough to use them and kids are pretty good at circumventing them.
You can also set all app installs to require approval, and you can set daily screen time limits for app types, apps, and web pages.
thebunkFull MemberJust caught this dropping off the front page….
…. Try googling “screen time passcode” or similar. Will try and post a screen shot later
thebunkFull MemberYou’ve got a funny way of asking for help from Apple users, is all I can say.
1thebunkFull MemberSurprisingly hard to photo even with the noise giving away their position.
Here’s one squashed on a window
Here’s another one. Harder to spot, it’s a tiny one buzzing around in the bush:
thebunkFull MemberLofts are amazing as insights into people’s lives and psyche
In our previous house loft we found an old clock and a knife very firmly embedded into a rafter at an angle suggestive that a very short knife fight had occurred.
thebunkFull Member@retrorick does Octopus Agile only work if you are on it with knowing the rate on an hourly basis? We’re not really organised enough to turn the washing machine etc on at specific times, so assume it wouldn’t be any good for us but maybe that’s an incorrect assumption?
thebunkFull MemberIf it has got worse it could be because a neighbour has updated their signal. How many WiFi networks can you see when you connect a device?
You can get apps that tell you which WiFi networks in your house have the strongest signals, along with the channels that are congested and then you should be able to change the channel your WiFi network runs on from your router. From memory try and have space between the channel you are on and your neighbours.
thebunkFull MemberQuite a few wireless routers support streaming from a usb drive plugged into it. I’ve not tried it myself but could work if that’s all you want it for?
6thebunkFull MemberI think there’s a way STW get a cut if you purchase from a link posted in a comment, so here’s the Kindle link:

7thebunkFull MemberFair play Nicole Cooks dad. Beautifully written, evocative and cutting.
thebunkFull MemberI became a manager probably too early, and then was lucky enough to mix and match between coding most of the time and managing most of the time. Now I run a pretty large development team and barely ever code apart from for fun. I sometimes think I wish I’d stayed a coder as from where I am now it looks like a pretty sweet life, but I also know I am very proud of my progression.
I am not a born leader, not confident. Software dev is a great industry for non traditonal managers in this respect. In the more “managery” meetings I go to now, I’m usually the quietest person in the room, but when I do say something people probably listen (maybe, who knows, best not to worry about it too much).
I’ve noticed that the people that end up being good managers of software developers almost fell into the role, because they couldn’t help but want to improve something about how the team they were in worked.
Do you do that anyway? Can you see a route from how you work day to day, to this new role, or does it just feel completely different and boring?
Also, I noticed you said:
It’s been strongly hinted at that I would be the preferred applicant
Why would you be the preferred applicant? Is it because they think you’d be amazing at the role? Or because they CBA to look for a good replacement out on the market?
managerial with the added pressures, responsibilities and stresses
Is that just your guess, or is this based on seeing other managers you have worked with and for at your past and current place? I went into management because I was lucky enough to have been managed by some really great people that made it look reasonably easy and worth doing.
thebunkFull MemberYeah the all inclusive costs can make a big difference. Also just check on the salary sacrifice calcs. My portal (Tusker) didn’t take into account the additional tax relief savings, or higher tax rates we pay in Scotland (even though it asks for my postcode) which both made a big difference to my take home pay.
thebunkFull MemberMy wife turned on a tap in the upstairs bathroom one morning and the pipe burst. I was already at work and she couldn’t turn the supply off. The kitchen ceiling fell in just as the emergency plumber ran in. On the plumber.
So arguably it was our fault in that we should have turned off the supply faster, and also the bathroom tap was probably dodgy diy plumbing from the previous occupant.
Thankfully we were able to claim on buildings and contents insurance anyway because for once we were covered by Aviva rather than GenericInsurance4You.
(plumber was alright btw)
thebunkFull Member@zilog6128 that’s awesome, Padel is like all the best bits of tennis and none of the bad bits.
thebunkFull MemberSwingball and speedball are all about smashing the ball as hard as possible, not much room for technique or finesse.
2thebunkFull Memberhow if I write a whole paragraph of text does that do it what tyres for Elon keyboard warriors that have strong feeelings about toasters and how other people lube their chains ona gravel bike that’s really just an xc bike with drop bars. about paste in the middle of some text? this?
Hmmmm that didn’t work! Oh great now I look mad.
thebunkFull MemberI’m not one for arguing over which multibillion dollar corporation is better, but the obvious difference between Elon and VW is that VW were caught and punished, whereas Elon has been getting worse and worse since the Thai cave rescue fiasco and gets away with it.
I don’t think owners of Tesla’s are all far right misogynistic incels, but I do think they care more about how well the buttons work in their cars than how much damage Trump and Elon are doing to our civilisation.
thebunkFull MemberiPad and a bucket of haribo keeps em in one place. Or tell her about all the wolves out there.
thebunkFull MemberYeah, really annoying design. Still looking for the perfect lights.
thebunkFull MemberLorne Sausage sat in Bovril sounds next level dirty! Incredible.
thebunkFull Member“I like strawberry jam, I’m going to give that raspberry jam a try”
Ok. Which jam is made out of beef?
Marmite has a different viscosity. If I spread the same amount of marmite on a slice of toast as I use for bovril I’d be sick afterwards. And most importantly, they taste very different:
Bovril tastes like the caramelised bits you get at the edges of the dish a slow cooked beef stew or bolognese was cooked in. Marmite tastes of salty disappointment.
thebunkFull MemberNah, it’s just that you couldn’t export beef from Britain during bse. Exports are apparently quite a large proportion of Bovril production so they went Vege for a bit.
1thebunkFull Member@cougar reported for closing the thread and then continuing the thread without using <thread>, and also for trying to constrain Bovril to a cup diluted in boiling water, and also for banging on about unrelated and inferior foodstuffs. Disgraceful.
Also:
Bovril and cheese on toast :yum:
thebunkFull MemberI’m reporting the Marmite/Vegemite apologists who think that they are a bovril alternative. It’s like saying peanut butter is the same as pate just because they look similar!
thebunkFull MemberTry a YT Izzo? Think this is fairly near you https://uk.yt-industries.com/demo-a-yt-bike/yt-mill-showrooms/
6thebunkFull Memberthis one belongs to our eldest who rides it half a dozen times a year
I can’t imagine why ever not a youthful person wouldn’t be positively delighted to ride it most often what what
(glad the mrs is ok)
thebunkFull MemberI can’t see the link between knives and face coverings. Knives can hurt or kill so it’s right there are some laws about them. A face covering cannot do those things.
France can hide behind lots of cultural baggage to ban religious stuff, thankfully we can’t. There are plenty of police powers enabling them to harass youth/minorities without needing a face covering law as well. I too find them disconcerting but I find a lot of things youthful people wear disconcerting and don’t feel the need to have laws about them.
thebunkFull MemberHave location turned off
I’m not sure who you’re trying to shake, but it won’t help!
thebunkFull MemberOur baavet smelled sheepy for a good few days and then gradually went away, or we got used to it. Really quite it though!
1thebunkFull Memberdon’t give hugs in the night
Huh? Hug your kid whenever you or they need it.
It needs some tough love for a bit and it breaks your heart
Your kid doesn’t need tough love. That’s a choice to make based on you and your kid.
don’t make a rod for your own back
Was talking to a mum the other day who said that this is the single most hateful phrase she remembers from the early stages. Do what works for you without worrying about unnuanced and unhelpful phrases like this sticking in your head.
Not to mention the co sleeping thing being really dangerous.
Plenty of countries and cultures where co-sleeping is the norm.
I’m not advocating for or against sleep training or co-sleeping btw. It’s different for every family and every child.
Hopefully the one shred of comfort you can take from this thread is that basically everyone has to deal with this, and everyone deals with it differently according to our family’s needs, and our parenting values (which we all made up as we went along, and now with the wiseness of time and distance, try and explain and justify to others).
1thebunkFull MemberSyke Farm on Buttermere was wonderful a few years back. Once you’ve lugged all of your stuff from the car park and pitched your tent you won’t want to move again.
Short easy walk to lake, and seemed pretty quiet and idyllic, even in summer holidays.
Walkable pub for those rainy days too.
