Aaaargh stupid flipping forum just lost my post showing all the weights and prices!

In a nutshell – I’ve compared all the claimed weights of my current parts with those of upgraded parts in my price range.

It turns out the cranks only offer me 100g but cost £249 whereas new xtr pedals give me 160g at just £64. The biggest surprise was the carbon wheels i was looking at (£800) actually ADDED 30g! Had I gone for the exact Roval carbon equivalents I would have saved 123g but they would have cost me about £1300 which works out at a over tenner a gram. So bugger that.

Glad I did that. Just saved about a grand.

Interestingly I weighed the bike using the bathroom scales (ie. I stood on them, picked up the bike and calculated the difference). It weighs 14.1kg (slightly less than a metric tonne). The claimed weight when new was 13.18kg. So I reckon I can spend about £160 on new pedals (160g), chainset (60g), and swap the bars for a carbon pair I have (70g) and sit pretty in the knowledge that there’s nothing more I can sensibly do whilst spending my saved cash on malt whisky and trail centre trips.

So what I have gleaned from the wisdom offered above:

    – Best place to lose weight is wheels/tyres providing the new ones are actually significantly lighter than the originals.

    – Carbon cranks are expensive and don’t add up to a big weight loss.

    – Other components (stems, bars, seat posts, pedals etc.) all add up so a few grams here and are worthwhile but the costs ramp up.

    – Lose body weight (but it isn’t the same as a light bike).

    – Spreadsheets.

Thanks all. I think I may get some new wheels and shave some extra grams off with a better chainset and pedals. Forks are heavier because I replaced the knackered Rebas with some Pikes. I shan’t be going back again! New bike costs circa 3k. I reckon I can do the wheels and bits for around 1k and they’ll be transferable to nearly all the other bikes in the garage too.

    Time to get spendy!

Thanks, yes been tubeless for a couple of years now.

I was looking at Blue Flow carbon wheels. I’d be tempted to buy direct from China but i like the idea of a uk ppint of contact and warranty.

I got a pair if these from Sports Pursuit last year. They great but I’m not sure I’d pay full price:

Dunno if Planet X still offer the XLS with a flat bar? Might be an option. It’ll fit 38mm max tyres.

Will do…. There’s only 10 miles difference so I’ll get up a bit earlier.

    Thanks.

I like my one of these:

But no pit zips and the hood can’t be stowed….

I bought a non-ceramic set in january, they were very dead by May with occaisional riding. One side was complete seized so that i couldn’t even free it after I’d removed it and soaked it in wd40.

Also had problems with two sets of their jockey wheels. I won’t be buying either from them again.

Their race matrix pads are awesome tho!

I’ve got one of the Acer R11’s. Had it about 15 months. I use it for web, email, reading mags, watching films and tv, and the odd bit of writing and spreadsheets.

The only frustration i have is that google still haven’t got android apps working with the SD cards, so i have to transfer the maps/vids etc to the internal memory before viewing them. Some people on the dev forums are getting all flustered about this, but this is the only real flaw. Otherwise it is a great, simple, robust, inexpensive bit of kit.

    I’d buy another.

@milfordvet glad to hear it arrived safe and sound. I’ll keep an eye on updates on the build.

@milfordvet cheers. I’ve got a Flyxii 202 frame built up with flared drops, 105 sti, and spyres. It’s a cracking monstercross bike for fast off road stuff but the ett is just a bit too long for long distance stuff with the drops.

A mate has just got a Fargo and I’m a bit jealous. The m003 could be a shortcut to a Cuthroat without the £££!

    The 19″ t1000 carbon 29er frame i’ve ordered

Don’t spose you could post a link @milfordvet? Sounds like what I’m after…

I’ve got a Ramin 3+ which I’ve squeezed 3″ Spesh Purgs in both ends. It’s brilliant! I normally ride 29ers, which are undoubtedly faster, but as a rigid all weather blaster it is great. The tyres don’t have a problem with mud either.

Don’t buy a Topeak DX. I’ve had two break in 12 months!

To echo the sentiments above, i also cancelled my auto renew when the site kept on refusing to let me sign in. As yet I’m not inclined to change my position as too much is wrong.

Eg. I just got halfway through a review with ads getting in the way, went to sign in, couldn’t find log in on the left hand menu, X button didn’t work to collapse menu, so i hit back on my phone browser and the page closes. And i still don’t know which 2.6″ tyres to buy!

In the words of Roger Murtaugh “I’m too old for this shit…”.

I tried it using Vivobarefoot shoes. My arches notably improved. I ultimately transitioned to a minimal drop wide toebox shoe as i got tired of staring at the ground trying to avoid sharp stones!

I appreciate the comfort now but miss the feedback of minimal soles.

FYI i moved from normal shoes to minimal fairly rapidly but upped my cadence and concentrated on midfoot/forefoot strike. Didn’t have any probs.

BTW if anyone can recommend a minimal drop wide toebox shoe then let me know as New Balance have stopped making mine!

What was the Spesh you did it on? Looks like a Camber evo? I’ve been meaning to take mine on my annual SDW trip, but always end up taking my hardtail and regretting it mid bumpy descent.

    Awesome looking trip

As the above poster said, stick Antisan on the bite within 20 mins and the effect of the bite is massively diminshed in my experience. I have a little tube in my pocket when I’m riding now.

And yes, there’s loads of the buggers about this year. Got bitten twice last week when they flew down my top!

    It’ll fit a 27.5 x 3. If that helps. Probably not much.

I just about manage to email them one by one to the unique kindle address they give you. It’s a fairly painful process though! Never managed to do it via the (so-called) browser on my paperwhite.

My experience is the same as the others above with OKO. It’s pretty good, and much much cheaper. Only issue I’ve found is trying to seal a non-tubless tyre. If the sidewalls are porous then it won’t seal them like a latex solution will.

Did Winchester to Amberley today, it’s dusty and hardpacked. Wear a buff if you’re doing it with the BHF as you’ll need to cover your nose and mouth on some bits (unless you’re out front!).

Also very loose gravelly bits in places so careful on fast corners, its sketchy!

It’ll be cooler next weekend Wally.

Take it slow. Eat something every 20 mins. Don’t stop for more than 10 mins and keep drinking stuff with electrolytes in.

You’ll be in Eastbourne before you know it but if you’re anything like me you’ll be ready to jack it in somewhere between Ditchling and Firle Beacon Masts (hill after Southease station). Keep going and push up the hills if you need. After the radio masts there’s only really 2 bigs hills left.

Good luck. I’ll be riding it on thur/fri for the 8th time. Sucker for punishment…

Funnily enough I bought a set of OO carbon forks 2nd hand. Same thing except the SFN had been rammed far down the steerer and a expander bung fitted. I never would have know but for getting inquisitive about how deep the steerer was with a torch.

I’ve not died yet. Although i can’t be 100% sure of that.

There’s two nutters I know of in Tilford. The bloke who lives in the big house Tilford side of the bridge who runs out of his house and poke you with sticks if you ride the footpath between his house and the old plant nursery.

I don’t worry about him, I know where he lives.

The other chap wears camo and has an SAS moustache and is proper mentally ill. Claims he’s related to the Queen and has a knife collection. I’m fairly sure he’s in an institution atm, but I’m sure he’ll pop back up sometime…

    I worry about him!

Yes, one of them landed on my table in the New Forest on Monday. Didn’t fancy the look of it so flicked it into next week.

I’ve done the 6hr pair. It was good. Great singletrack course. Not a pissup (sadly) but very friendly vibe.

    Might enter 12hr this year.

I’m not fast btw but still managed 5th.

Good luck. It’s such a good day’s riding. I’m doing it again in July. Ninth year of the trot I think. It’s the highlight of my summer’s riding I think.

I think the Camino comes with the Bomber drops which aren’t typical ‘road’ style drops. I have them on my cross/gravel bike and the flare and shallow drop makes them quite useful off road.

Lots of hand positions too, but ultimately I think they do look a bit odd with flat bars. My cross/gravel bike came with either. I chose flats as I’m predominantly a MTBer, never got on with them and then stuck the bombers on. Much better and they look cooler!

I definitely have less stress on bikes I’ve had a while. Plus learning to do most of the maintenance myself has got rid of the sinking feeling I used to get when something started making an odd noise.
