I once shunted my father-in-laws’s car through a fence and into the neighbouring garden.

The insurance covered everything. And my father-in-law was remarkably relaxed about the whole thing.

Problem is I believe that the army can’t publicise when they’ll be using their land as they could end up being the target of a terrorist attack. If they tell Gorrick that they can’t use the land on a specefic date then by the powers of deduction the bad guys know the area will be crawling with squaddies that weekend.

It sucks. I had to pull out of a Gorrick last year because of the same thing. It must be so difficult to manage.

    Marlow bridge + lorry = 200k

Another plonker who can’t read. Personally caused me a few hours in the car and not with the kids (or the bikes).

I was in exactly the same position as you OP. I took the risk, after all it was only a litle stream really.

Fast forward 3 years and a number of close shaves and I couldn’t sleep whenever there was a heavy rain alert. I spent nights clicking refresh on the met office rain radar. Eventually I convinced my wife to move. It was that or have me committed!

She agreed. We moved in the February. The house flooded the next December.

It wasn’t the flooding event I was scared of, it was the upset to the family. Six months out of home. Nowhere that I could rent with the dog and cats. The loss of resale value (which is ultimately my kids inheritance). All that lot. Despite the fact I wasn’t there when it flodded I wish I’d trusted my instict and walked away.

I live on top of a hill now.

I stuck some flared drops on my 29er singlespeed but it just felt a bit too stretched out. I probably should have tried a shorter stem on it. So it’s back to flat bars with stubby bar ends for yanking it up steep stuff.

But… I put the flared drops on my cx and upped the tyres to 38mm and it rides like a totally different bike. It’s not monstercross but the flared drops make a massive difference on the nadgery sections.

I may get another pair and give it another go on the 29er with a short stem.

I had problems connecting the other day bit that’s not too unusual. Seemed ok last time I used.

    Thanks for the PSA.

Wash your hands as often as you can, don’t eat communal biscuits in a meeting and take vitamin d from October to March.

Works for me. Not had a cold in 2 years and I used to get 2-3 each year.

I’ll probably get one next week now…

I’ll be cooking up a lamb liver and heart paprikash at my mate’s autumn camp out tomorrow. He’s having one of his own lamb slaughtered today so it’ll be fresh, local and tasty as it gets!

    Yummy!

I’ve got a 14l and it’s not a spacious as you think. After you’ve got a litre or two in the bladder, filled the tool pocket up with a tube, stashed first aid, nibbles, phone, wallet, and tools there’s not a lot of room left for jacket or extra layer.

But then it has been suggested I carry too much. I probably don’t need the fire steel and lint.

The running author Robin Askwith talks about it in his latest book. He seems to think it has great benefits. I’m too much of a wimp to try it!

I’ve wondered this too. My only concern is the extra pressure might just make it too difficult to get a good seal. Let me know how you get on!

Marks and Spencer. Well built and great customer service. Ours are two years old and have had two children, a big dog, and me mistreating them. They still look pristine. I was recommend by my Dad and he knows about that sort of thing.

I’ve got an XLS which has done a lot of road work with road tyres, and the occasional off-road. It goes just about anywhere my hardtail goes but is less fun.

If I could spend the money again I’d by a titanium hardtail frame with interchangeable dropouts and a cheap road bike.

Saying that I’m not sure I’d sell it and I quite fancy a Bish Bash Bosh…

Hmmm… I got charged over rrp the other day for some lube. I was most miffed. I thought it was a bit much but he’d made a great deal about finding it at the back of the shop and I felt uncomfortable about walking out without buying.

Checked the rrp online. Won’t be shopping there again but to be honest it was not my favourite lbs because the bloke is a surly fella with a bit of an attitude. Should have gone down the road.

I run using low drop shoes (NB MT810v3) after getting caught up in the whole minimalist shoe fad a few years ago. I definitely prefer some cushioning though!

Start short, run relaxed, and try to leave the Strava/Garmin at home is my advice.

Good book: Richard Askwith – Running Free.

There’s a grove of Coastal redwood at Alice Holt arboretum in Surrey. The rest of it isn’t that interesting though apart from a tiny strip of single track with a few gap jumps.

Oh and a rare graft hybrid Aesculus + dallimorei (if you can find it!).

If you can stomach buying from Mountain Warehouse I’ve got one of these. Google discount codes and you’ll get it for just over £30:

    Fortitude jacket

It folds into an internal pocket to about the size of a grapefruit. It’s been pretty good so far.

GCSEs and A-Levels are a good start. You sound sensible and eloquent. I’m sure you’ll do fine. I have only just managed to get past my salary from when I was 25! I’m 42 now. I changed career at 29.

Recruitment consultancy appears to be a good way to make money. I know some absolute idiots who seem to be able to make lots more money than me doing it. If I had to make some better money (40-70k) that’s where I’d sell my soul. I married one instead though.

    Good luck.

If you want to prolong the life of your Spesh bearings then you can always pop the seals off them in the frame and re grease them.

I do this about twice a year. First wash them out with gt45, let them dry and blow them through with a can of desk cleaner compressed air. Then squirt some new grease in. It works a treat on my Camber. And it made the guy in the Specialized Concept store pull a funny face which was an added bonus.

It’s worth changing the bolts about every fourth change though as they’re not meant to be reused indefinitely and you can over torque them.

I’ve got some OMM Kamleika ones which i never wear because if i fall off they’ll be ruined! I usually wear Endura Singletrack trousers but they not waterproof so you’ll get soggy legs in a proper wet one. My mate swears by his Showers Pass trousers. They’re waterproof on the front and back but breathable on the side. Good fit too.

I tend to ride in all conditions.

Would a sattelite Internet connection work? That’s what my neighbour did at my old house. Similar countryside location, similar crappy broadband. She also got some Vodafone gizmo that routed her mobile phone through her new fast broadband.

I was looking to do the same but ended up moving,

I bought a Felt nine 30 second hand a couple of years back. It is has been a brilliant bike. They still sell them, £899 at Tredz currently.

I’ve done more riding on it than my other more expensive bikes.
