hoping it’ll be as good as Revenge of the Sith

    That’s where you’re going wrong right there…

I really want to be excited, I really do. But the memories of coming out of the cinema after seeing the Phantom Menace will never leave me.

Ergon style grips – The answer to bad saddle positions that’ll never get adjusted, since 84.

That’s actually quite an interesting point. When I was a teenager and first got into riding it was a rock hard selle italia saddle and thin foam grips on a flat, narrow alloy bar, never had any hand pain whatsoever. As an adult it’s been really bad with a flat bar which may well be down to position, but I never thought about changing anything as the ergon’s made it all go away! I think I’ll look into that.

Wait until it warms up a bit, every time you ride near a hedge ride with your mouth open – hey presto – loads of protein as you swallow flies and bugs.

In the winter get a really long strawberry shoe lace (available in all good old school sweet shops) roll it into your back pocket, uncurl up your back and over your shoulder and into your mouth (much like a camelbak tube). As you munch it’ll slowly unwind. Bingo, food on the go. Simple really.

I wouldn’t advise it as a general purpose bike at all.

It’s my only MTB so I use it for everything from racing to trail centres to big days out in the hills. It is stretched out so I find I do have to concentrate on lifting the front end over things that normally you’d find yourself barrelling through on a bike with more travel and slacker angles. I do genuinely love it, it’s fast and fun and has been said before, very capable.

I’ve got a Scale 30. It’s a race bike, built for speed. Arse up head doon.

I have GS grips for my flat bars and GA for the risers. Won’t use anything else, been a revelation. Also got their gloves which I really like too. Have a reputation as a bit of an ergon fanboy amongst friends, but hey, it works for me!

We got Spotty Otter kit off little trekkers for our eldest. Really kit, she loves it.

I run X-king’s, but as a 26″ tyre not 29″. Really like them though, good grip and roll fast. Tend to run X-king up front with a race king out back.

    @MT

Sorry, but at 6’2″ I’d need a large! Thanks for the offer though!

I always wanted one of those Pace frames too.

More recently a Cotic Soda – they stopped making them just as I was getting the funds together – GRRRR!

Currently lusting after a 29er full carbon XC race rig – ‘Dale flash is the favourite or a Canyon. Full carbon Turner got the pulse up too!

If it runs close to any windows on your inlaws property it may also become a right of light issue.

Mine have fallen apart… Full of holes. Fit is ok, bit baggier than I’d have liked for a base layer though. Maybe they’ve just stretched as the neck is HUGE!

Maybe I’ve just been unlucky – I did buy them in a sample sale.

I like the look of those jerseys, but I’d be a bit worried about longevity – their merino baselayers haven’t lasted well for me.

Been using Northwave Arctic boots all winter – and it’s been quite a winter… Never really had cold feet. Best purchase of the winter!

I get bugger all signal out here in the sticks. I tried Orange sure signal but it kept dropping signal in the middle of calls and generally doing it’s best to wind me up. I’ve resorted to wrapping my head in tinfoil and standing with on the coffee table to get a signal.

Concrete can be a brilliant conductor of sound if suspended and allowed to vibrate – especially impact from footfall or a deep bass type. The density of a soundbloc board should help to deaden any resonating sound in the space but we very often have to supplement it with other acoustic measures to achieve the required drop in sound transmission. Exposed timber is good at reflecting sound so you might want to think about carpet with an acoustic underlay (unfortunately!) It’s always good practice to isolate and absorb sound – so an air gap and some dense form of insulation between you and your neighbour is what you’re after.

A lot will depend on the construction of the floors and ceiling. Adding soundbloc board to the walls and insulating is all well and good but you may need to look at these other areas as well.

Also, when carrying bikes on the roof does the wind noise from the bikes mean that whatever bars you get it’s still noisy?

Pretty much. I have Thule aero bars, but the wee plastic filler has gone missing from the T-track… Bloody noisy things now! It is a good speed limiter though, go much above 60mph and the whistling reaches truly horrific levels.

The wind howled. Lightning stabbed at the earth erratically, like an inefficient assassin. Thunder rolled back and forth across the dark, rain-lashed hills. The night was as black as the inside of a cat. It was the kind of night, you could believe, on which gods moved men as though they were pawns on the chessboard of fate. In the middle of this elemental storm a fire gleamed among the dripping furze bushes like the madness in a weasel’s eye. It illuminated three hunched figures. As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice
shrieked: ‘When shall we three meet again?’

    There was a pause.

Finally another voice said, in far more ordinary tones: ‘Well, I can do next Tuesday.’

Wyrd Sisters has one of the best opening paragraphs, I especially enjoyed as I read it whilst being force fed Shakespeare at school!

Funny, that’s pretty much what I was going to say. Guards, Guards was the first one I read and it had me in stitches.

There was a guy in one of our recent road races who threw his empty bottle to the side of the road whilst racing. He was so PRO it hurt. Plus a twunt… Utterly pointless and frankly despicable behaviour.

I’ve got an older Canyon SLX and it’s superb. I’d definitely buy Canyon again.

Arm warmers and a gilet! About as versatile as you can get. Probably also go for knee warmers too and pack a buff in a jersey pocket for if it gets cold/when stopped.

I can’t really fault it other than the weight. The steel frame does have a nice quality to it, seems pretty smooth.

I have the steel one. It’s a good bike, rides really well considering the price , weighs a ton though. Good trainer, pretty looking too! Very happy with it.

Wear a buff like a bandana. You may look like a cycling pirate but it keeps the sweat off! Spesh helmets have a good vent across the brow which I always found pretty good.

The other option is that the actual crews will remain the same but the running of the system and and the aircraft will be what is privatized. That would probably be the best of both worlds.

Isn’t that what would happen anyway?

Depending on where the paths are you may not even be able to get to them, still lots of small roads closed. I’d leave it for a while to be honest!

Some interesting films on there, a few added to the list (though now we live on the edge of a forest in a detached house the wife gets pretty freaked out by any horror films! Barely been allowed to watch any…) I prefer ones which get under your skin and linger, not gore fests or jump out your seat frights.

    Ones missed which I liked:

Let The Right One In – the Scandinavian one, really loved it. Not the scariest film but beautifully shot and really well done.

Stakeland – little indie flick about a vampire apocalypse (makes a change from zombies), surprised me a lot by how good it was and the climax sticks in my head somewhat.

The Road – it just got under my skin. Really quite haunting.

Somafunk – did you ever used to go on the rides from Riks bike shed on a Sunday?

Roads still closed here in places. Spent 2 hours clearing the drive. Now I like to think I’m physically fit, I ride a lot and exercise almost every day. 2 hours of shovelling snow has destroyed me!

I’m very much a native. Lived most of my life a stones throw from Mabie forest. Was riding a MTB around it before anyone had heard of a trail centre. Only recently moved back and loving it!

Somafunk, I remember 1994, we had about 3ft of snow and everything stopped. If you were in trouble you had to put an X in your garden for the helicopters to spot. The sledging was awesome though!
