It’s plugged into an Ethernet port on a WiFi mesh unit that’s in the middle of my house. My router is at one end of the house so wanted to position it more centrally.

My understanding is this doesn’t help the TRV connection as they don’t run off WiFi, this is my main concern, I have a decent mesh system to make sure the receiver and thermostat will connect well.

I have a Nest mk2. It was fine until the heat link stopped working a few weeks ago, you can’t get replacements any more. Quite annoying when you have a perfectly functional thermostat part and it’s only 7 years old or so. I think I’ll get a Wiser next in the hope that it will be better supported, and I like the TRV functionality of them.

Big Nest fan, had one in the old house but want radiator valves in the new place

but I have got the hub central in the house hanging off a mesh node

What do you mean by this?

For Tado users with the radiator valves, how do you find the range on them?
I’ve read some poor feedback on Tado’s own site about these, worried in a large-ish house but more importantly with old thick walls, I’ll spend a lot on Tado values to find they don’t connect up. Sounds like Drayton work on a mesh type setup so would perhaps be a better option.

No-one’s mentioned the claims process if your bikes are stolen.

    I did 2 posts above….
Claims process with Barclays last year very easy, likewise Aviva in the last.

This court ruling seems to vindicate him in his accusation that he was conned out of money by someone to help track down online trolls, it doesn’t seem to clear him of being a horrible person to the many others who have claimed as much.
The BBC also dispute that the guilty party in the high court case was ever the source of their information, despite what he says.

Barclays were great for me last year, and dealt with a claim very well. Underwritten by Aviva who I have had good dealings with in the past. Unfortunately for us the premium rocketed this year so not for me, but if price is good I’d recommend both.

This year have moved to Frontier who I knew little about but seemed to get well reviewed. In terms of setting up policy and making adjustments it’s been very good, and they will cover bikes over £5k unlike Aviva/Barclays. At the moment we have buildings and contents combined, with bikes included in contents cover.

Do you heat loss calc to get the room size in kW.

Then go to the manufacturer radiator spec sheets and look at the small print. You’ll see that the stated output are for 70°c flow temp. There should be an asterisk with a conversion formula for your desired temp. Convert to 50° for condensing boiler or 35° for heat pumps.

All done, I’m 100% confidence everything is calculated correctly but the output each calculator gives still varies wildly.

Its kind of academic if your house leaks heat like a Sieve.

Well, yes….. Victorian house with all the sieve like qualities you might expect. Plenty improvements we can make in the short to medium term but it’s always going to be pretty sieve like I think.

If it were me, I think I’d pay the couple of hundred quid to have heat loss calculations done specific to your home.

I’d also be speccing them for the inevitable move to heat pump, like them or not, they seem to be just around the corner.

Yeah good shout on both, though not sure I can stomach speccing up for heat pump right now, rule of thumb seems to be 2x normal size, which will lead to some insane pricing given my other half is committed to something a bit more design-y (read more expensive…..)

New combi probably going in anyway so think heat pump is far enough away that I can forget about it for now.

Screwfix has a radiator calculator on their website

Yes but this is my issue, many websites have a calculator, they give wildly different values.

Speaking of the ToB, where the heck is Cavendish at the moment ? Since winning his title, he’s not been out at all ? Despite seeing some races that would arguably have suited.

He raced Tour of Poland and Commonwealth Games last month. Suspect given he raced a lot early in the season and already had a Grand Tour in his legs that a bit of a break was in order. Plus QS know he’s on the way out, and he’s just had another kid, so suspect he may not be top of their pick list.

Hive is actually one I wouldn’t personally recommend, not because it’s bad per se, just that as home automation gets more popular, the bigger companies (e.g. nest, owned by Google) will start to push out the smaller ones, and if they don’t get bought out will simply shut off their servers

Hive are Centrica, so hardly a small company and I wouldn’t be concerned about them going anywhere.

Issues with North America possibly more likely to be related to the significant differences in the heating systems for each region, and a European company struggling to adapt their product.

Would no floor actually save much money? I didn’t realise you could get them without floors, doesn’t it hold everything square and upright?

A quick search around shows yes, and they would save a fair few quid versus the floored versions.

It’s in response to all other parcel carriers offering the same service. I’d all but stopped using Royal Mail due to the convenience of pick up at the door from everyone else, since they started offering it I’m back to Royal Mail again.

Edinburgh has a lot of advantages. Big enough to have all the facilities of a city. Small enough to ride out of in half an hour. Out of the door riding you have the pentlands and a few other bits. Good access for trains.

Its ruddy expensive as a city. The Edinburgh suburbs are pretty soulless imo. Forme living car free its a very good compromise

Would concur with all of this. We love the benefits of city living but also being able to escape to the countryside and Edinburgh is brilliant for that, we are pretty central but 20 minutes from my door and I am in the Pentlands, within half an hour in the car you can be in the Tweed Valley or on a beach in East Lothian. Even if you just want to go for an hour long blast on the road bike you can piece together a decent route with minimal traffic without leaving the confines of the city. The city is safe and plenty green space and activities for the kids.

Cost can be an issue, and we have definitely made an active decision to compromise on living space for location, but it doesn’t feel quite so bad having been in the city for so long so we don’t know any different, and although we will pay an eye watering price when we move house, we’ll also get an eye watering price for what we already have. MUCH harder though if you are coming into the city from a cheaper area.

It’s basically an auction, so you tell it how much you want to pay and for what…. some will pay per click on an ad, some pay per purchase. Then it will bid based on that. It works totally fine for items much less than £50, you just adjust your bid accordingly.

Sly plug for our club daily lunchtime races at 12:15 every day. Be a hot sweaty mess for 15 minutes in your lunch break then go ride outside in the evening.

Sorry missed the last few replies here. Was put off the Judy Silver after comments here and still looking around for a good deal on something else. Been keeping an eye on Ebay for decent condition 2nd hand stuff but no joy.

Found some Judy Gold’s for sub £200 now, which seems to be a good option, I reckon better than a Recon SL. Same MC damper but the weight difference of the aluminium uppers in the Judy will make a pretty big difference for such a small light rider……he’s only 8 and less than 30kg so reckon the weight savings from the Judy are more important than any stiffness gained in the Recon.

Good day, much prefer it at Buzzards and logistics are run very well. We got so lucky with the weather! Not mad keen on the course tweaks this year but it’s a minor grumble, all in all a fun day.

Suntour Epicon may be a better buy than Judy’s for sub £200, just found a shop selling new on Ebay for £190. Aluminium uppers and arguably better damper than the cheaper RS.

The Yari’s at £250 are out of budget, even more so after factoring in a travel adjust.

I had found a couple of Recons in 27.5″ at sub £200 but they are all steel uppers still, including the ones posted above.

    tenacious_doug

The Yari is nearly twice the price and 80mm longer travel than needed, so not really in the same ballpark

The supposed legal lock in early on in Scotland would take a lot of time and money to enforce, most people will just move on and find another buyer.

Not my experience, it saved our sale that I suspect would have fallen through pretty quickly in England. While it’s true that actual enforcement may have been more trouble than it’s worth, knowing that legal protection is in place allowed our (good) solicitor to throw their weight around with enough substance to their threats to get the buyer back to the table and sale went through.

It would be interesting to know how much you could actually influence a race result with sticky watts.

Significantly I reckon. It’s surprisingly easy to do and if done right can give a good boost, if you look at the power graphs or in game footage of someone riding off with a stupid stop start cadence, you can see the benefit.

    tenacious_doug

I think the main takeaway point is if your pedals and trainer measure the same then it doesn’t really matter either way.

Not strictly true, though Zwift remain cagey, one reason is that the way PMs measure power is often different to trainers and are therefore more susceptible to sticky watts. I believe with certain pedals it’s surprisingly easy to do it by accident so expect that’s one of the reasons that the regs at the higher level require it. How much it matters elsewhere is debatable, personally I ask all the folk in our club to set trainer to primary for races like ZRL where riders can and do get reported for things like sticky watts, so it just gives me one less thing to worry about since the issues go to manager first before riders.

If anyone fancies a series to keep the legs turning between now and the next STW one then we (Team Electricspirit.co) have a 5 race series running through to 4th Jan, first round was last night but it’s best 3 from 5 so ok to skip the one.
It’s private invite only but as long as Robbo is ok with me posting on this thread I’ll add the links for you all.

All cadence and speed data comes from the trainer.

    All comes from the trainer.

As mentioned above it’s definitely worth looking at the training platforms. A smart trainer like the Kickr is designed to be controlled by an app or program like Zwift, Trainer Road etc, if you are not going to use that then there are cheaper trainers that can be bought without the “Smart” functionality.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

    Agree with this sentiment entirely.

but these kind of weekends (IMO) are more about the spending time with folks you’ve not seen for ages and chatting about stuff while you bimble along, rather than being radical gnarr-fests.

For this reason I’m not necessarily too bothered about a trail centre if that works best, but at the moment can’t see one that fits the bill for travel distance, good eating/drinking options. Likewise the fact that Hebden might not be in the best conditions doesn’t concern me so much, as I’d quite like to visit the town anyway and have done for a while. Mary Townley loop sounds an interesting option.

Another happy Niche owner here. Works well, great workflow, easy to clean and retention is almost non existent. No comparison with the Eureka though I was making the decision between the two when I got the Niche, I’ve no regrets over going with the Niche.

Those of you using the Core, can you just jump on it and use it without having to connect to anything? I.e. like a “dumb” trainer?

Yes but there’s no way of adjusting resistance without connecting to something, at least the Wahoo app.
