I’ve used recycled office carpet tiles in my workshop. Easy to vacuum up mess, and very cheap to replace any that have got oil or tyre sealant on as I bought “spares”

Squish it into the gap, sand it to shape when dry, then paint it when you paint the wood.

Milliput would be ideal for this task.
